DJ Lagway rumors

16

Jul 4, 2023, 6:15 PM

We promised Hebert that if he committed we wouldn’t take another QB in this class or the next, there is no truth to the rumors he is flipping as we won’t take him.

That said this is the world of recruiting and anything can happen but from what I’m told there is no chance

Interesting approach

It’s also risky because there is no commitment from the recruit that they will not transfer, and also injuries are a reality too

We got spoiled with Deshaun & Trevor back to back - not many schools have that type of hit rate

Look at alabama & uga recently - they burned through tons of 5 star qb’s to find “the one”

Makes some sense and would follow Dabos pattern. However, when Hebert arrives on campus, assuming no one leaves, you would only 2 scholarship QBs on the roster. That’s a big roll of the dice promising to sign one QB in the next two cycles.

2025 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No doubt. Seems at minimum they'd go the preferred route..

5

Jul 4, 2023, 6:35 PM

or grab a grad transfer as they've done the last 2 classes.

Helms is the last class of supers, I believe, having that extra, extra year to burn, but does he ride it out?

Tyson is gone after 2023, there will most definitely be a stopgap in the mix.

The portal changes the dynamics for sure. If they made that kind of promise to Hebert, they must see Trevor type talent.

They seem to like him, a lot. Still you have to practice...

That’s been our clear strategy…. One or 2 big time QBs and some walk ins and a grad transfer, Dabo is all in on that vs the USuck approach of 4-5 low 4 stars, it’s not by accident.

Dabo is found a seam in the system. He needed a way to sign elite QBs without throw up front NIL $$$ at they. He accomplished this by using the depth chart to his advantage. He makes them a featured recruit. It’s very smart but does have risk but there is risk regardless.

When Hebert arrives in 2025, Klubnik and Vizzina will still be here, unless somebody leaves early or transfers out. So, for 2025, we would have 3 QBs on scolly. hopefully we'll have another good one on the hook by then for 26. That seems reasonable.

Klubnik may be gone

Jul 5, 2023, 6:03 PM

Klubnik is a Soph this season so eligible for the 2025 Draft. He'd be a SR if he comes back for 2025 and, honestly, if he plays up to his potential he'll be gone.

In a perfect world, we have (then) JR Vizzina ready to take the reigns and Hebert taking a year to get acclimated before Vizzina goes to the draft in 2026 to make it back-to-back #1 draft picks for the Tigers.

Imagine that as a recruiting tool!

If that promise was made, the staff must really see stardom in Hebert. Hope they’re right.

Not sure we should support such an aversion to competition though.

Well, it's easy to predict we won't get a highly rated QB this year (2024) since we missed on all our previous 2024 QB targets. And even TigerNet's 2024 Clemson Football Top Recruiting Targets page no longer shows any potential QB Targets for 2024.

For 2025, we've already offered & accepted Blake Hebert's commitment! Of course, we've also offered George MacIntyre--and I've yet to see that we rescinded our original offer to him, or that he has rejected our offer. I know at least one additional 2025 QB target (Antwann Hill) was waiting patiently for our coaches to decide on an offer for him as well. We sort of answered with no offer to him, but instead accepted Hebert's commitment. However, both MacIntyre & Hill (as well as Montgomery) are still listed on TigertNet's 2025 Clemson Football Top Recruiting Targets.

I know of no authoritative Clemson spokesman indicating we're shutting down all further 2025 QB recruiting, or of any specific promises made to Blake Hebert. However, all indications are that our coaching staff is very happy with Hebert's commitment. So maybe, a promise was made. We'll see.

It looks like Michigan has their focus set on McIntyre as their top QB target so I would not be surprised if Dabo told him we have our guy at QB.

Not take a frontliner, a national type guy, sure, but no QB?

1

Jul 4, 2023, 8:16 PM

I believe you believe that's what was promised, and you've been golden, but why would the staff go into 2025 with only 4 QBs, one a true freshman? 1. Dabo has said in the past they'd like to take at least 1 QB each cycle. I get the 2 year skip for a guy they love, but it leaves a serious hole in their numbers, which 5 has been it. Heck, Dabo himself has talked about what happened a number of years back when Maryland showed up, ~6 deep into their QB chart and if I'm not mistaken, dood was a LB?

Helms gets his degree and wants to play, he's Brice 2.0.

Tyson is gone.

If the draft looks right, CK could stick a toe in after this year & next, he'll be eligible. So, you are going to back fill your 2+ starter with another true freshman or finger's crossed, find a perfect, one year fit as with Tyson & Hunter.

There has to be a caveat or understanding, and that doesn't even begin to take into consideration injury. There's a reason girls don't play the game.

I don't know how they'd wrap their arms around this, and/or have serious doubts they'd "plan" to go into 2025 with only 4. That's just bad business, so A conversation of that nature had to take place, no? Unintentionally, things happen, but 2 years out seems a lot of real estate to cover to get to short-handed?

It's not just playing time, it's arms for practice. They're precious and must haves. It's one of the things in 2021 that didn't lend itself to WR development. Puma was nursing a torn achilles, DJ was struggling and the lack of real depth there showed up throughout that season. That's not that long ago.

Always appreciate your additions. Thanks for priming the pump.

We screwed up letting Billy Wiles go, he would’ve been a much better option than DJ or Cade last year…. I still believe a lot in Helms, every time I see him he is way better than I think he should be…. Like I said, this is recruiting and things can change fast, but that was our pitch to Hebert to get him all in now.

I also don’t disagree with your logic, it’s just how we go about the QB spot. We go all in on a great QB and find a serviceable grad transfer and PWOs. I’m not a coach or even close to the eye of one so don’t take my opinions very seriously, but I am relaying what happened and was said. I know that was a long winded way of saying ignore my speculations in my posts but the stuff I say are facts are in fact what was said/done. Take it how you want. I also really enjoy your He man woman haters club posts, I’m a big fan DSP even though you shat all over me for my use of ! And emojis.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Haha, don't take me wrong, not questioning you, just hoping

1

Jul 4, 2023, 11:40 PM

I misunderstood based on recent history and some things Dabo has said. I don't get too involved in recruiting until the ink is dry and that doesn't mean as much now. Even you saying we go All In and find a serviceable grad or PWO, seems to suggest what I am. If Dabo delivered Hebert the you're our horse, even if you never win a race, will you marry us speech, well then Dabo's golden, as always.

And really, shat is a strong word, I test the waters, kick the tires, take it around the block once or twice, but never intend to crap the new rug. No good can come of that...

I mean, it's not what happens to you, but how you respond. And as I said, you've been golden and seem to know more than many when it comes to the great college sport of American Gridirons.

Cheers.

If the coaches really told the Hebert kid that, I'm mixed.

If this were 10 years ago and NIL/Transfer portal weren't a thing, I'd buy it. Nowadays, idk if I would -- even for a high character kid.

I guess I'm once bitten twice shy from the fact we did that for Willy Korn back in the day (at least, it hasn't been an open secret of us doing the same for any recent QB recruits) so I'm just not as open to it nowadays.

That said, here's to hoping that Vizzina pans out and it becomes a moot point for when the kid shows up to help us win our 4th or 5th Natty with Dabo

I guess I could see us doing this after missing on a QB the past cycle. That probably drove extra motivation to lock someone down in the next cycle.

To be honest Lagway didn't even look that impressive to me and finished at the bottom in quite a few Elite 11 drills and 11th overall. Hebert will probably be the best fit for the offense anyway. I'd prefer to take a breaks from DJ's for alil while.

Whatever. That would be a stupid mistake by our coaches to tell him that. Hebert ain’t all that and if he is scared of competition we don’t want or need him.
