FSU outcoached Rittman and the last out of the game

Yes, we had several errors that scored runs and opened the floodgates to others, but I was really impressed with their coaching decisions. First off, I'm not one of those that follows every game of every sport and pretends to know everything about all of them. I've only started following softball since we got our team in 2020, and honestly, follow more games on the in-app-stats page than on TV. But I've never seen a coach switch pitchers when the starter was doing so well. I also noticed they swapped out their defense and their runners with some frequency, and not out of a sense of urgency or obvious need, like is typically the case. They coached very strategically, as well as played almost flawlessly.
And - again, I wasn't watching it live and wasn't there - I wonder about that last play where we were thrown out trying to get to 2nd off of the FSU outfielder's error. Was she waved on by the coaches, or was that her decision to try to advance to second? I saw some people on here bashing her after the game (typical, unfortunately), and I saw in a highlight where she hesitated just past first when it looked like the outfielder was going to catch the ball, then made what looked to me to be a kind of uncertain decision to head to second, but couldn't tell if coaches were telling her to do that or she just thought she could make it. Any insight on that?

Clark tried to advance on her own instincts after seeing the ball mishandled by the left fielder. She took a normal turn around 1st. What she didn’t take into account was the two out situation and the fielder’s higher caliber arm. Against the typical non conference competition she beats the throw. It was a mistake but Rittman supported his player’s instincts there.
Also should note Rittman said he’d never seen a player swipe home on a throw back to the pitcher before. I think he recognized the Tigers got exposed on that play by not finding the runners as soon as the first tag at the plate was done. There were a few plays where FSU took advantage of the Tigers not staying aware of the Noles runners and just assuming a play was complete. My guess is FSU saw these opportunities while scouting the Tigers tape. In that sense Rittman got outcoached. Hopefully, he’s using this as a teaching opportunity to prevent that from being exposed again.

True . . .but Jacobson, and then Logoleo, need only produce a hit (as we were down by one run). It would have at least extended the inning (or perhaps, the game).
Go, Tigers!

I’d take Cagle at the point with Clark on first over first and second with someone else ip. She took the same pitcher deep the day before.

A million times yes. Clark got caught up in the heat of the moment. Any coach in his (or her) right mind would rather have your All-American up with a runner on 1st and 2 outs than to have your All-American intentionally walked with 2 outs to put runners at 1st and 2nd. I don't care how good the 4th and 5th place hitters are, neither of them is Val Cagle and I want my best to get a swing or 2 with a chance to win the game.

I agree, but Clark's aggressive style has helped the team in the past. We' had already seen a bad throw in this game let one of our girls to score from first after getting up from retreating back to first. So no it didn't work out but that aggressiveness will help more than hurt in future games. the stealing of home plate is something I've seen my own daughter do in division 2 softball. the girl took off as soon as the catcher threw the ball to Cagle. Had she waited until Cagle caught the ball she would have had to return to 3rd base. seeing as her last move would have been to retreat to 3rd. The ball was in the air so she was safe to run. This is why they have to continue to pay attention to the runners. Clark has done this 2 times at least this year going to 2nd base.

Wasn’t their best series but I’d never criticize a great runner like Clark for being aggressive on the base path. Tigers ran into a better and more established program in FSU.
