ADHD is a cop-out for poor character

Apr 15, 2014, 11:24 AM

A close friend works in the public school system and kids with ADD or ADHD are given IEPS (individual education plans) that almost make them untouchable by normal forms of discipline.

What would get a "normal" kid suspended, would be a slap on the wrist for a kid with an IEP.

Case in point, this type of coddling does nothing for character development so most of these kids continue a pattern of bad behavior.

CK was given plenty of chances but he blew it. Plain and Simple.

Change the laws to respect ADHD so that when our daughters get Winstoned the ADHD patients won't go to jail.

I have ADHD and have very poor character, so this is absolutely false.

You are wrong,...and right in a way.

Apr 15, 2014, 11:29 AM

ADD is real, but it is used as a cop-out many times.

ADD/ADHD is misdiagnosed in many kids or they just don't have a severe case; and becomes a crutch for laziness and bad behavior.

But, make no doubt, ADD is a real thing...I have it and have worked with kids that have it that absolutely cannot function unless medicated.

I didn't say it wasn't real. I just think society is increasingly using it as an excuse for bad behavior and poor character.

We all have our issues but part of the maturation process of becoming an adult is to rise above our basic personality type and inclinations.

Apr 15, 2014, 11:34 AM

you to learn more about ADD/ADHD. It is a real issue/condition and is not an excuse for anything. Schools have a way that they are required to deal with medical issues affecting children. Agree with how it's done or not...that's up to you.

But do learn more and spend time around kids with this issue. I would imagine that if you had a child affected by ADD/ADHD you wouldn't be associating the condition with "cop-out" for poor character.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe it is real. I am also confident that it is often

Re: ADHD is a cop-out for poor character

Apr 15, 2014, 1:10 PM

You are obviously uninformed on a medical condition, and you are being a total sterotypical troll that has proved to be nothing more than moronic.

To say that ADHD diagnosed children (We are talking about kids, dude) use their diagnosis as a "cop-out" for having a poor character is basically the same thing as placing negative stigma on a child who can't partcipate in high school PE because they are in a wheel chair.

If you are going to place negative stigma on anyone, it should be the educational system. If you were intelligent and informed, and not an insensitive troll who probably can't "rise to the occassion" for his lady at home and is struggling to make ends meet daily from 9-5. You would be smart enough to criticize the educational system for not reforming their programs so these kids can be more disciplined later on in their lives. However, it is flat out unethical to claim they use their medical condition as a "crutch" to get by, when they can't help what are legitimate symptoms.

I have ADHD myself, and it's probably the reason i feel "impulsive" to write you this rant. But people like myself have to work a whole heck of a lot harder than people with "normal" cognitive development. I sat in those classrooms throughout high school that are responsible for adhd students lacking discipline compared to "normal" students.

Now i'm about to earn my degree from Clemson, which requires ambitious focus and production. It's booger eaters like you in the world that makes our success above and beyond even greater.

Re: Here, here!! I for one salute what you have done. Believe me

Exactly, ObiWan!

The truth is ADHD patients just think differently than the majority. We are honestly good people, and have lots of positives to offer to the world (like your son, and his police work, thats awesome!!) We are often more creative and intuitive too.

Since your name is obiwan, i will hit you with this food for thought.

ADHD people are the members of society who would be labled as Jedi's or "force sensitive".

But anyways, i'm going to cash in on my ADHD "crutch" and get back to studying for finals. My "undisciplined" time here on tigernet has come to a close.

Apr 15, 2014, 1:40 PM

People are being too sensitive in this thread.

As someone with ADHD, I don't feel offended by anything said by the OP. He's right, ADHD is constantly used as excuse for poor behavior.

ADHD might prevent me from cleaning my room or doing my home work. It might lead me to be quick to anger.

But ADHD doesn't prevent me from knowing right from wrong.

Worst of all, people associate ADHD with bad behavior. That means there are a lot of good kids who go trough school without getting the treatment they need because they know how to behave.

Re: The OP said "ADHD is a cop-out for poor character"

Apr 15, 2014, 2:05 PM [ in reply to The OP said "ADHD is a cop-out for poor character" ]

Thanks soccerkrzy. That's exactly what I meant. In hindsight, my wording could have been better.

What I basically am trying to say is that there are SOME kids who have ADHD and also have severe behavior problems, and our society says "well that's okay, you just have ADHD."

For instance, if a kid with ADHD got into a fistfight, his discipline would be handled differently at school than a kid without ADHD.

Does anyone really believe that is fair? Does ADHD excuse consistently bad behavior, which is often a sign of poor character?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think we are on the same page here

Apr 15, 2014, 1:50 PM [ in reply to What a terrible analogy ]

He says it is a cop-out for poor character.

Your character is poor because you have ADHD. You agree with that?

I agree the condition has nothing to do with people's ability to tell right from wrong. And I have no idea why this subject is even tied to Chad Kelly.

But many in this thread actually think ADHD is not real...it's only an excuse for poor behavior and/or bad parenting. That's stupid.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Let it be known I DIDN'T Say Kelley had ADHD, but had some

symptoms imo that might cause one (a learned or professional one) to think he may..especially to the recent/past issues with his "impulsivity" tendencies..as on public forums or towards his coaches when upset. But, many of us say OR do things OR get upset under duress and it's not ADHD that's necessarily talking.

My bad for starting this possibility..but again maybe it's a learning lesson for some of us that didn't know what some of us go through with ADHD..as I do & I have.
