Academic intelligibility

Does this still exist in NCAA sports. With players constantly transferring, you never hear about if they meet the bare requirements to transfer. What are the bare minimum requirements to stay on full scholarship. Guess grades are never a problem for these guys.

There are still eligibility requirements. I know it was probably tongue in cheek but occasionally you hear rumors eg McCall not being able to get into UF

stories of kids who enter into the transfer portal who forfeit their scholarships and futures because as impressionable kids they are sold a bill of goods to leave. I bet they will be angry and will be demanding to get a free education that they once refused.

Academic fraud has been going on for decades.

It didn't start with UNC. They just exposed it for the world to see.
30 years ago I was teaching a student in a freshman algebra class. I worked at a JUCO at the time. This student was a basketball player at UNLV. She played 4 years there and was academically eligible all 4 years.
I taught her about 10 years after she got out of college. (I didn't ask her age, but I'm sure it was early 30s. She was married and had a child when I taught her.)
When she enrolled at my JUCO she didn't have enough credits to even have an AA degree. She was academically in her sophomore year. I asked about her time at UNLV. She said, "I loved it. It was basketball, boys and parties. The counsellors made sure I had enough credits to stay eligible."

It's impressive that some of the players these days can graduate in only three years while playing college sports. All I know is it took me a full four years, and I had to attend summer school three times to stay on track. It would have taken me like six or seven years if I had sports in addition to academics.

In order to maintain eligibility for competition and athletic financial aid, each student-athlete must meet several institutional, conference, and NCAA requirements. In general, student athletes must:
Be enrolled and attending as a full-time student each semester (12+ credits for undergraduate; 9 credits + for graduate)
Earn a minimum of 24 hours of coursework (18 in their respective major) each year in order to be eligible to compete the next year
Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. and earn a specific percentage of degree requirements (e.g., 40%, 60% and 80%).
There are a few other nuances which may vary per school, but this is the gist of it.

Our son's soccer coach was a former player at a top DII school. He said he made better grades during the season because he knew he couldn't waste any time.
One of our son's HS friends got a full scholarship as a DI cheerleader. They had weight training, practice every day, games - FB, BB, WBB, and off season competitions. She did it her fesh & soph years. She gave it up for a "normal college life." Tons of respect for athletes who graduate, especially the ones who do it in 3 years.
From a personal friend who is a prof at an sec school, the coaches tell the players what their major will be, what classes they will take, and when. Nearly every semester she had to say no to coaches who wanted her to give better grades to their players.

If you ever looked into academic transfers, you know that the portal “transfers” are a farce. It is VERY difficult to transfer and graduate in a reasonable time in any academically rigorous program. Athletes doing it are not real students and have not been in 40 years or more.
