success. I believe our defensive talent level is down. LB and secondary looks slow. DL not as powerful and DE not the powerful with speed we had. Defensive recruiting has fallen and it is showing on the field.

While our starters talent level may be top 5 in the country we are really thin at a lot of positions on defense. I’m making that comparison to dominant D’s we have had in the past. We still need some additional portal help.

I agree we need more depth but let’s not pretend there aren’t 40-50 defensive units across college football playing a higher level than ours with light years less talent. This defense had a coaching problem not a talent problem. There’s a reason the main focus by Dabo has been on retention and firing defensive coaches.

You can’t make that comparison because teams are not built the same. NO ONE, has that depth. That is one good thing about NIL and the portal. Talent is diversified.

We have some amazing pieces, but to call our 2 deep (and yes, anyone should judge our Def by the 2 deep) Top 5 in the country is absurd.

Having that kind of depth like we did during the run is no longer a thing… you don’t have 5 stars on the 2 deep that are willing to not be the guys anymore. That is the new age of college football and you see it with the parity this year across college football. We def have the talent to win it all but the scheme was head scratching at times as well as lack of adjustments.

We had talent this year, but not Jeremiah Trotter Junior type of talent. Trotter was fast. He could close. He was football smart. He could get off blocks quickly. He didn’t miss tackles.
This year Sellars got a lot of yards against us because he simply could run around players who couldn’t get off blocks or players who took bad angles. And for some reason, our defensive coordinator wasn’t comfortable putting another hat in the box to force him to throw. Just one game, but a very important one for the state of South Carolina bragging rights.

the talent we need. One of the years with BV, probably after the Power Rangers left, he went out to Iowa St to learn about the 3-3-5. That was probably one of our down years talent wise along the line but we were better on the back end with Simmons roaming the middle.

Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft with the 155th overall pick
There is no reason that a defensive difference maker like Jeremiah Trotter can’t be retained for a fourth year in college. If all he is getting his fifth round money from the NFL. He is worth more to a college football team and he should be paid more to stay in college for a fourth year then go to the NFL for a fifth round draft pick money

I'm going to go back to the missing element on D being player leadership more than an overall talent gap. Over coaching as well. We've got to have some of our guys step up into that nasty, angry, baller mode that infects those around them to get the most of the 11 out there at any time. Brown and Hampton have a real opportunity to seize those roles with a 2nd year up ahead. Parker also has the makings - would be great to see him take that to another level for us. Great defenses have great player leadership. Can't have one without the other.

being ELITE on offense is more of a must to the NC. You must have both, but you can afford less on Defense than offense.................and some of those tides may be changing over the next cycle too.

Maybe, but no way to guarantee that. Sometimes there is a transition period. Look at the difference in Riley’s impact between year 1 and year 2.

(Off)I move, (Def) you move, Def generally ahead of the Off coming out of spring practice as well as NFL training camps..an over simplification I know....what would save transition time is not having to break in a rookie DC and having 3 lock down corners that could stay in man all the time while the 7-8 in the box chase QB and stuff run-

I'm far from a pumper but:
LB will have 2 all conference guys. Brown and Woodaz
DE will have 2 all conference guys. Heldt, TJ Parker. Just imagine if we get the hybrid LB/DE from Alabama. (Jeremiah Alexander)
DL are all ESPN top 300 guys. Woods, Burley, Capeheart, Thompson and Brown-Shuler are top 100 recruits in their classes.
How many times did you see Terrell chase down wrs and rbs in 2024? Hampton and Barnes have shown tons of flashes as well.

A good DC will make sure our fundamentals are sound. Our players won’t be arm tackling, taking bad angles, rushing headlong into the backfield and overrunning the play allowing elusive quarterbacks and running backs to run for 50+ yards on a play, face guarding receivers, playing 10 yards off the line and allowing receivers to make easy catches, and trying to tackle Sellers and other big players around the shoulders.
A good DC will also have the right players in the game, chew some a$$ when he needs to, and recognize what the offense is doing to make quick in-game changes to counter.
None of these things require more talent. We have the talent to be a top 10 defense, maybe top 5. We don’t have the technique or strategy.

I suspect we'll end up ranked in the top 15. That means that 90% of teams' fans, coaches and players envied our ranking.
If a top ten finish is considered a successful season then I'd say we're definitely going to be successful with our without Wes Goodwin at DC.
If you're talking about winning a national championship then all but one team will fail next season, that's unrealistic and counter to common sense.

An outsider will not have an immediate impact until he can bring in his team of assistants. Dabo should promote Eason to DC and hire a linebacker coach.
