2017 Clemson signing class

Feb 16, 2017, 10:04 AM

How do you guys feel about the class you got this year? Also, what are your expectations for the coming season for your Tigers?

How many starters either graduated or are leaving early for the NFL from the 2016 NC team?

Lost Deshaun Watson, Wayne Gallman, Mike Williams, Artavis Scott, Jordan Leggett, Jay Guillermo on offense. Lost Carlos Watkins, Ben Boulware, Cordrea Tankersley and Jadar Johnson on defense. Defense will be replaced by guys that have been in the program and who have had valuable playing experience, and even got to play in a semi final game this past season when we were beating OSU by 31. Offense is yet to be seen, lots of question marks.

As far as the signing class goes, Amari Rodgers and Tee Higgins look like they will be Artavis Scott and Mike Williams 2.0, and we went down to Louisiana and pulled a RB that runs as violent as Gallman did. Dabo has done a really good job of recruiting O-line the past few years, lots of depth. Recruiting class from last year and the year before is what will really tell how sucessful we will be this year, you can't ever realistically expect true freshmen to come in and make an instant impact.

What do you think your defense will look like this year? Seems like you lost alot of talent on that side, and I don't see you guys putting up alot of points on anybody now that teams outside of the SEC have helped to figure out the phenom and SEC offensive player of the year in Jalen Hurts

So you basically lost 6 on offense and 4 on defense. That will be interesting to watch, especially on the offensive side having to replace over half of them. Game experience should make that transition easier for those stepping in though.

I think our defense will be very solid. Yes, we did lose some of the best players but just as you guys did, we had a lot of back-up players that were able to get some quality playing experience this past year. I think our main issue will be our O-line again this year. We probably have the best WR and RB core of any school going into the season. Just need either Hurts or the Hawaii kid to get the ball to them...that takes protection from the O-line.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

RB maybe, but not WR... but you'll soon see. Doesn't matter

Feb 16, 2017, 10:35 AM

w/o a QB anyway... Post-Watson, we're waiting on the spring returns as to the next great...

Feb 16, 2017, 10:37 AM [ in reply to Re: natty champs back to back two termz*** ]

Do you get Stewart and Ridley back? I could def see why you think that, I just dont think you have a QB to get them the ball, and Saban's b!tch fits on the sidelines in the playoffs showed that he just wants to run the ball and rely on that defense, so that kinda cancels out that best WR core. I just can't see Hurts being a passing QB, his only throws come off of major defensive busts, you better hope that lefty comes in and makes a push. Some of the athletic defenses that can play man and stop the run seemed to really give Hurts trouble.

Offense is by far our biggest concern, but we return 4 of 5 on the O-line so that should make the transition a little bit easier. Gonna have QB competition with guys that have been on campus for a while, so hopefully somebody steps up and runs away with that job. Our WR core is always gonna be strong, watch out for Cornell Powell, Diondre Overton, you already know about Deon Cain and Hunter Renfrow, and Ray Ray McCloud

Feb 16, 2017, 10:37 AM [ in reply to Re: natty champs back to back two termz*** ]

We have very similar circumstances to deal with. Our OL depth is the best it's been since DF was coach, and like you, we reload on Defense. I expect us to be a factor for the foreseeable future, but I expect you guys to be right there again, as well. Finally we have quality depth to allow for substitutions with little drop off. Y'all have been there for an eon. It is nice at the top of the perch, isn't it?

Of those 10 just listed, 9 of them got invited to the NFL Combine.

That should say all that is needed to be known about our coaches eye for prospects and development.

Our classes are small because our coaches are truly committed to our players and do an excellent job in the entire process. Unlike a lot of other places that hold tryouts and have a great deal of turnover from year to year.

We are certain that we have the best coaching staff in all of college football and aren't really concerned about recruit rankings . As of yet, we haven't decided who will play us In the championship game next season but hopefully it will be a team capable of winning!

Funny you should say that. Do you really think Clemson or even Bama decided which team would be their opponent? That is ridiculous. Also, I simply asked for the overall feelings of the class being signed. I said nothing about recruit rankings.

Feb 16, 2017, 10:14 AM

Al had. But we filled positions needed. Our star per recruit puts us in the top 4 I think. But numbers be ###### it's a good class for filling out needs. Really excited about some of our 4 star and I think one 5 star redshirts vying for time.

Re: Was a quality class. Obviously not the number

Feb 16, 2017, 10:18 AM

I think that is the key to successful recruiting, filling team needs. I don't care about player or class rankings because those can be very suspect. I prefer to look back four years to see what that class accomplished to determine how good/bad they were as a recruiting class because you get a more true picture that way. I know you guys got some good players so congrats on that. Hopefully they will pan out and keep your tigers in the hunt for the next few years.

To answer your other question I personally

Feb 16, 2017, 10:32 AM

Don't expect us to be in the playoffs this year. Now I think it's possible that we could be but I don't expect it. Here is my thought process. Replacing Deshaun Watson is no laughing matter obviously. However, we do have some up and coming studs at qb. Our defense should just be monsters. IF, our defense can keep us in the earlier games and allow a qb to separate and develop, then we may be Championship caliber by the end of the year. Our rbs, WRs are great. Online should be better but our defense should be ridiculous. Biggest question likely is our qb, te (have some dudes), and if someone steps up as leader on d.

Feb 16, 2017, 10:47 AM [ in reply to To answer your other question I personally ]

Bama has made the playoffs every year. Lost in the first round to OSU the 1st year, beat Clemson for the NC in year 2 and lost to Clemson for the NC in year 3. I can definitely see us returning again this year too. (fingers crossed). I think the kid from Hawaii will either push Hurts to improve his passing game or he will take the starting job from him. Either way I think is a plus for Bama. We have enough experience on defense that I am really not all that concerned. Our O-line will be the big question for us this year, especially since Cam Robinson is gone. Even that might be a good thing because it seems like he was called for holding or false start many times when we got deep in the opponent's territory...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

On the mental side of things I expect your guys to

Feb 16, 2017, 10:56 AM

To play with a little extra something bc they obviously don't care for the taste of defeat. I don't see anyone in the SEC challenging you that much this year. I fully expect you to be back. It will be interesting to see if penn state and USC will start where they left off. Ohio state got left out the previous year with one loss and have been elite as well but big 10 teams didn't fare too well in the last two. Virginia tech, fsu, and Louisville will challenge us. But I think there is a formula for beating Jackson. Virginia tech has to replace their qb and best receiver. Fsu is fsu but had a weak oline. We play auburn early and a touch worried about that stidham kid though our defense has fared well with big 12 qbs. Should be an interesting season and while I don't expect us to make it back as I mentioned earlier it is definitely a possibility. I honestly think Clemson and Alabama have been the most complete teams of late. You have some work to do on offense as do we. But again they're going to play with that taste of a loss . . .

Re: On the mental side of things I expect your guys to

Feb 16, 2017, 11:08 AM

I agree with your comment about Bama playing after a loss. Losses have had a strong tendency to motivate Bama to do better in the last few years. Just look at Urban Meyer for proof... 2008 SECCG vs. 2009 SECCG...

Re: To answer your other question I personally

Feb 16, 2017, 11:06 AM [ in reply to Re: To answer your other question I personally ]

Both our toughest games will be FSU and AU, then y'all face LSU where we have VT, imo.

Will see if those "young" coaching staffs at LSU and VT make any progressions from last season before giving them a higher ranking within our schedules.

With VT, I believe it is more about all the players they will be replacing.

With LSU it will be about the new OC and how soon they get rolling. This will not be the same old one dimensional LSU that has been over the past 7 years or so.

Your probably right about the kid from Hawaii...he's very, very talented. I can easily see Bama returning to the playoffs next year, as usual you're loaded with talent, great fan base, clearly a hallmark program.

Personally I'd love to see a rematch and frankly a home and home deal. Somebody's going to have to consistently compete with you guys and I'd love to see us play you more. It's clear you recruit better than anyone, but I think we have an edge in player development.

And by the way, what is your take on Sarkisian leaving after 1 year? I was surprised by that.

Feb 16, 2017, 10:21 AM

Since Bama is hiring a new OC I am anxious to see what style of offense we have this year. Hurts is considered a dual-threat qb. I think our #1 QB recruit that signed with us is also although he seems to be better suited than Hurts to play as a pro-style if called on... Our QB race in the spring should definitely be interesting to watch...

Feb 16, 2017, 10:29 AM [ in reply to Re: 2017 Clemson signing class ]

I think this is a reply to me, I'm bored so I'm gonna respond anyway.

Hurts is a phenomenal athlete, he showed that off against us when yall took the lead with a couple minutes left on that TD run. But I can't agree with the dual threat, I can only label him as a running QB. All of his deep pass completions have been on defensive busts, seemed like he never threw anybody open or put a ball at a spot where only his guy could make the play. Didn't watch any Bama games tho besides LSU, Florida, Washington and of course against us. And it was very hard to watch those games, I know yall love that 3 and out football but it gets hard listening to Vern Lundquist talk about how much of a game changer JK Scott is. But gotta give credit where its due, yall win.

What about replacing D-line? Linebackers? you got any names to throw out that you think will be key contributors?

Re: 2017 Clemson signing class

Feb 16, 2017, 10:39 AM [ in reply to Re: 2017 Clemson signing class ]

4 years ago, our signing '13 signing class was ranked #14, despite us signing a large class by our standards, 23 kids. That class has been a catalyst of great success and will likely have 15 of them drafted into NFL.

Hard to tell in recruiting until 4 years later, so you got to trust the coaches. We do have 69+ returning scholarship players returning from a National Championship team, so we got a chance this year to compete.

Go Tigers!

Re: 2017 Clemson signing class

Feb 16, 2017, 10:32 AM

We were already loaded at every position. A very young team.

Reloaded for the future with quality where quality left.

Major question mark is; who will be our punter? Which just happened to be our weakest link this past season.

As for the what will Clemson do without Watson? We have two quality QBs who have been here for 2 plus seasons, another RS freshman who was the #4 QB in the nation out of high school (Elite 11), and two more Elite 11 true freshman QBs in/coming in. The QB battle will be fierce and we will be fine.

Another fun position to watch will be our RBs. We lost Wayne but have a 4 guys that all excite. Their blocking in the passing game will be the deciding factor at who gets the start here, as always.

I'm just as excited to see the young TEs who have been waiting in the wings over the past few season. Loaded!

Our Defense will be extra salty this year, big and extremely athletic across the board.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The advantage that Clemson has with this small class

Feb 16, 2017, 10:35 AM

is the fact that we don't have many guys to replace. The reason we don't is because our talent and character evaluations and player development are so good that we have far less turnover than the typical team that oversign due to high attrition rates. That way, we consistently have teams that have a greater percentage of talented, experienced players with advanced knowledge of our systems.

Our defense should be better. Our offense will take a step back due to the loss of Deshaun Watson, but we should be able to field a quarterback at least as good as Hurts and probably a better passer, which means we will probably see you guys again in the playoffs.

Re: 2017 Clemson signing class

Feb 16, 2017, 10:38 AM

The avg star rating was good for #4 in the nation. If you count the RS from last year as freshman now ready to play, it's a fairly impressive group. Considering this coaching staff has historically done more with less. Ex: 3 star rb Vic Beasley as a frosh, now, all pro de.
Have to take into account coaching turnover at d-line, same time CDS has good history of hiring quality coaches. Based on recent history have to trust CDS, we're good to go & excited about the future.

Expecting another playoff run with a new qb & so much untested skill, rb, 2 new wr, te probably isn't reasonable but I do expect at least 10 wins because the defense should be good enough to keep the tigers in every game. If CU can get past Aub, Lou & VT with a new qb in the first month we're playoff bound again. Lou & VT are road games so difficult. Hope springs eternal!

Foster is a Bama type LB
Rudolph seems like a stud not sure DE or LB
Spector will be solid on STs and add depth to LB
Johnson could be a star and Brice is solid
Rodgers and Higgins are going to be NfL WRs
We got 3 OLs that have the size and skill to be really really good ones
Terrell is one of the best CBs in the nation and could play a good bit year one.
Etienne seems to be a solid back and May battle for PT most likely not until year two though.

Re: 2017 Clemson signing class

Feb 16, 2017, 11:27 AM

i've learned to kinda pull back the reigns on the true freshmen. Especially on defense, Coach V requires so much technique and knowledge. I know alot of us thought that Trayvon Mullen, Shaq Smith and Tre Lamar would play alot this year. Typically year 2 or 3 is when all of those guys really start to break out. I 100% agree with Foster and Rudolph, those guys play with an edge but they are also very instinctive

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 2017 Clemson signing class

Feb 16, 2017, 11:38 AM

I agree I do not think any will start but Terrell could see some time like Mullen did this year and I believe Foster will see time like Lamar did. Not a lot of time but I do not think those 2 redshirt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great small class but good. The team may make the playoff..

Feb 16, 2017, 11:33 AM

if our QB and RB situations work out well. That's a big IF. Our D will be better. Our OL will really solid. Our WR's will be awesome. TE should take a slight step back but will be good. Special teams should be better.
