The 105-man roster limit goes into effect next fall, but when teams will go to 105 scholarships is TBD. The SEC is delaying that and sticking at 85 scholarships next fall.

My understanding is that the roster limits go into effect at the start of the academic year on July 1st so it impacts this class and the upcoming football season.
Also I'm sure the SEC teams will use some NIL arrangement to cover cost of attendance for the 20 guys not yet on scholarship.

Can't do that once the No Walk-on rule goes into affect. That's the reason for no walkons, to prevent schools from buying all the good players and just letting them pay their own tuition.

With revenue sharing and NIL if a player makes over $250,000 he should have to pay his own tuition !

Read an article that said schools will start billing players once they start revenue sharing. There was something tied to whether they are employees or not as to how they will be billed. But this will be the only way some of these smaller schools could recover some of their money.

you just can't have more than 105 on your roster. Not all have to be on scholoarship

Well that limits the number of walk-ons and if they are on roster then they will likely be given schollie hence no more walk-ons. All these bigger schools carry 120-140 players on their rosters with everything over 85 being walk-on for the scout teams with benefits of the facilities. Teams not allowed to carry 125 players basically means no walk-ons over the 105. This is what Dabo was all in a tizzy about a couple months ago.

for 2025. That means at least 20, technical walk ons. Now, whether they fund them another way is another story entirely.
Likely all conferences take this approach until the bugs are seen in the system. Dabo has many issues with the 105 roster limit, biggest being if a guy gets hurt they cannot be replaced. You have a rash of injuries, you have no scout team. That was why all major schools had the large number of walk ons

Can you cite that? I've seen a lot of people on here who claim walk-ons are banned. My understanding is that's not really the case. My understanding is there is a hard-cap of players at 105 unlike the current system. All 105 of those players can be scholarship players, but they don't have to be. So you could theoretically have 100 scholarship players and 5 walk ons (not that you'd want to, but I think you could).

Technically you are correct. I guess like StriperFan is saying with the SEC remaining at 85 schollies, but they can have 105 roster so 20 players would Technically be walkons. My point is if Dabo has 105 schollies he is going to give them out therefore he has no walk-ons. Dabo has always saved a few schollies for walk-ons and I expect him to do the same but the days of 135 on the roster will go away therefore Dabo losing 30-40 players as walk-ons that contribute as scout teams and ultimate backups. But the 105 is to limit funding of good players and letting them pay their own tuition.

fair enough.. but that still doesn't limit the football roster.

scholarships were a means to pay for school/room and board.
There are other ways to cover those expenses now. I challenge you to find a power 4 football team with only 85 players.
I milled over SMU's roster a couple days ago.. They have 123 players. UGa probably has 435.

As others have said it starts on July 1 2025.
But you better believe coaches are already planning for it. While every team had the 85 scholarship limit, there is no limit on walk-ons. I believe we had somewhere around 135 total players including walkons.
That means if we lose 14 to the portal, graduation and NFL (for easy math). We will have to tell 50 kids to turn in their jerseys. I don't think a single coach in America is looking forward to that.
My guess is some have already been told and some they are waiting to see how the roster shakes out. Next June 30 is going to be a hard day for a lot of folks.
I am sure CUAtthefinish line has it all mapped out, but I have been thinking and saying for a few months now that it was always part of our plan to take a smaller class this year until we get past July 1 and the house settlement.

I would imagine amping up our club football team some is going to be part of our walk-on and numbers solution. With so many games per season now potentially you're going to need more than 105 bodies to practice and train with throughout the year.

If a player on your July 1 roster is hurt, he cannot be replaced. That's your roster for the year

I'm sure it starts with the first day of class in the fall, like the old rule for the scholarship cap. July 1 is just when the rules change.

One of the impacts will be teams will hoard athletes so other teams don't get them, was that way in the 70's before they limited scholarships. Schools like Alabama would just recruit every player they thought might be a threat on another team... there are not enough quality players to go around now and the brilliant NCAA made it worse...

Anything above tuition, fees, book, and supplies has been taxable since 1987. Room & board, cost of attendance, and any other extras were taxable before NIL. Pell grants weren’t taxable if used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, but you couldn’t double count. Before NIL, they usually didn’t make enough to pay federal tax, but they still had to file with the total scholarship value and qualified expenses to the left of the income line. All these years, the IRS never added a separate line or space for that info.
