Question about the portal and NIL

2

Jan 5, 2025, 3:58 PM

From my understanding this whole portal and NIL mess was the result of a court ruling that basically said college athletes couldn’t be prohibited from transferring schools or earning money from endorsements, etc. My question is, if a player is 18 years of age, why can’t they sign contracts with the schools the same way some professionals sign contracts with their employers? The player would agree to play at the school for X number of years with the compensation being a scholarship and whatever NIL deal they negotiate? The only way the contract could be broken is if both parties (player & school) agree to break it.

I assume they could sign it but any school that demanded all of its signees agree to such stipulations would be at a tremendous disadvantage if nobody else was requiring the same things.

True, but the positive part for the athlete would be that they’re guaranteed a scholarship no matter if they are injured or don’t perform. If other schools aren’t offering the same deal the school offering it would be at the advantage.

They do. Scholarships are contracts

for a semester or a year at a time.

They have nothing to do with NIL deals, and NIL can't be tied to a specific school, at least not yet.

Does the NCAA allow multi year/semester scholarship commitments?

If so, NIL deals could be separate contracts with the sponsors and players. The sponsors could make their deals contingent upon the player’s scholarship agreement with the school.

No, they can't.

NIL contracts can't be school specific.

If NIL had not devalued a four year degree to the extent that we see today and the timing issues with the portal college football wouldn't be in this situation ..I'm pretty sure our coach has pointed these issues out on numerous times.

NIL absolutely does not devalue a degree.

College athletes graduate at far higher rates than do non athletes.

What's with you kids and contracts? Professional athletes sign contracts, college athletes sign Grant In Aid papers for their scholarships.
