Put XT on a milk carton

Our D-Line gave Fields such a clean pocket. Burrow is going to pick us apart if we can’t get a push when just rushing 4.
When was the last time we lacked an elite pass rusher? XT looked exhausted. No speed around the end and he would get stopped at first contact. Henry plays like he’s got roller skates on. Davis has really saved us this season. Can you imagine if he wasn’t ready? What’s going on with Pinckney? Is he hurt? I don’t remember hearing his name all night. I like Foster, but he is a cut below any of our DL starters from the last 6 years.
We have to be able to generate pressure without an exotic blitz package or it’s going to be a long night.

I think yours is a good point and I think it is truly awesome how our OLine neutralized Chase Young.
But to the OP's point, XT did have 4 tackles, but he had 0 QB hurries. But it's not all his fault, our entire defense had zero QB hurries last nite. None, nada.
That's a real problem and it's going to be a bigger problem against LSU is we don't fix it.

Pinckney was in a boot at the end of the game and may be done for the year. I think most on here would prefer you not speak ill of 18-22 year old players.

@ClemTig - Cannot agree more. These are kids of our kids age. They do their best. I remember my son missing on a 42 yd FG in a Div III championship game and some of the parents commenting. can be hurting. Lets reflect back to Hatfield and West days and be thankful.

Agreed. 1 tackle and 3 assists. He and Henry are undersized and have to utilize quickness and speed. Whatever was going on with that turf last night might have been a factor. We were slipping all over the place.

If you have watched this defense all year, you shouldn’t be surprised by the lack of gaudy numbers from XT or any of our DL. All year Venables decided the pressure will come from exotic blitzes, not our 3 down linemen. The DL purpose has been containment. Stop thinking we can lose 4 freak DL to the draft and run the same scheme. Venables, like all good coaches, revised his scheme to fit his personnel.

And be happy that we have the only DC in the nation that could make that adjustment in a single year. CBV is truly a master of his craft.

Agreed and we can't say it enough. Listening to other coaches talk on TV, Venables is the #1 DC in all of CFB.

You are correct on the scheme change and I hear you, but my point mostly was that I really expected XT to be more physically imposing this year and for KJ to make the leap and its clear we haven’t seen that yet.
I love XT and still have hope he will be the next great DE off the assembly line, but he had a lot of one on one pass rushes where he got stoned right at the line with not much push. Maybe this OSU o-line is better than we were giving credit, or maybe XT is just a strong side end with holding up against the run as major priority. I feel like he’s more versatile and want to see him whip more OT’s one on ones.
Had he been assigned to Fields instead of Dobbins on that one read option that he blew up, that could have been the play of the game!

It’s hard to quantify “physically imposing” in a vacuum. For years we have become accustomed to freakish line play, but you must remember we were playing with 4+ DL each play. Cle Missle, Lawson, and even Beasley were freak athletes who played in a system that allowed them to pin their ears back and attack the QB with little regard for other aspects. Great for highlight reels and stat sheets.
Back to “physically imposing”. If I were to tell you a DE stuffs a hole, occupies a double team, and keeps containment to inside the tackle box, would you call him “physically imposing”? Grady Jarrett was drafted, not because he had highlight sacks, but because he was a brick wall in the middle of the line.

I agree with the fact that its hard to replace 4 DL in one year but this years DL is probably the least productive since Dabo has been here. Even in the past when we lost really good players to the NFL someone has always stepped up to where you couldnt notice much of a difference. I believe XT & KJ will both be dominate players one day but as of right now they're not playing up to their 5 star rating.

Those guys were in a 4 DL scheme. We have transitioned to a very heavily used 3 DL scheme. It’s hard to create highlight reel sacks when the OL outnumbers you. This is by Vendables design though. Simmons and Co. would not have the highlight reel sacks and hurries in our old system. Venables is playing to our strengths.

He is doing his job. He has set aside personal goals for team goals. He sets the edge, forces things back inside and when asked he gets after the Qb. Wait til next season when he has 3 5 stars and a 4 star on the line with him that are space eaters to shut down the run up the middle! I am proud of XT, when the NFL comes calling he will test off the charts and get rich!

Exotic blitzing has helped us all season. Justin fields threw only one interception all season. The exotic blitzes made him throw two last night. And it should have been 4. Kvon dropped a easy pick six, and dk dropped one also. Fields sort of had happy feet last night. So I don’t understand your point.

Just keep in mind that this may have been the greatest Ohio St. team of all time . ( according to Justin Fields )
They are a great team , but I do believe they have allowed their press clippings go to their heads .
After hearing Ryan Days excuses last night , he probably contributed to their state of mind .
