yesterday's grocery run.
Publix, either out of eggs, or cheapest are $9.99 a dozen. Food Lion, plenty of eggs, cheapest are $6.99 a dozen. Publix, ribeye's are $21.99/lb Food Lion ribeye's are $15.99/lb Publix - Beef filets are $29.99/lb Food Lion filets are $18.99/lb Publix - Fresh baby asparagus $2.99 Food Lion - Fresh baby asparagus $1.26
ALSO, bought two nice chuckeye steaks at Food Lion for $10. $8.99/lb.
I have concluded Food Lion is a far superior value to Publix. I just wish they'd carry canned baby clams and Nespresso pods.

I've shopped at Publix for 20+ years now. Since we got married in 2001

The change didn't come overnight. When covid hit and prices went through the roof, we started shopping at Wal-Mart and Sam's. Saved thousands. But Wal-Mart sux. So went back to Publix. But their prices never went down. So we basically buy all meats at Sam's, and everything else at Publix. Well, the real kicker were the meat prices. Like I said, we'd continued getting meats from Sam's, but the difference between Sam's and Publix kept growing. Publix kept raising prices, while Sam's didn't.
ANYWAY, Food Lion and Sam's are roughly on par with meat prices. But it's the other stuff I never realized, where Food Lion saves. Food Lion is also always stocked better, most times there's something I can't get at Publix. And the biggest thing, Publix is always packed, and it's miserable spending an extra 30 minutes saying "excuse me" to get through a shopping run. Food Lion is cheaper, less crowds, better stocked, I'm sold at this point.
I did a full grocery run yesterday for $177 at Food Lion. Would have been at least $225 at Publix. That's a minimum $2,500 savings over a year, likely more.

chicken, ground beef, stuff like that. I will get a tenderloin every now and then, but not their steaks - not a fan of the blade tenderizing.

Kroger here has the strategy of not enough open checkout lines, to push you into

self checkouts. Maybe 2 lines open when the self-checkout area is packed, with a long line. Food Lion does not have self checkout, and they have all lines open when busy. Kroger can't seem to keep stuff stocked, but they do have a broader selection than Food Lion.
My Food Lion got a re-model, re-stocking strategy as Kroger started all that, now Food Lion is cheaper, pretty good selection, and better checkout experience. I don't mind self-checkout for a few things, but when self checkout at Kroger is full of people who don't really know how to work it, it's irritating. And when I have a lot of groceries, I'd rather stand there and contemplate the meaning of life than ringing up all that stuff myself.
Plus Kroger is union, so their people only work so hard. Food Lion is non-union.

That's what we do. Publix for the BOGOs and random items we can't get at FL and then FL for everything else, with a touch of Aldi thrown in. For just the two of us, eating at home six nights a week, we average under $100 a week for our grocery bill. Of course thats just food. We get most nonfood items like detergent, TP, etc at Costco.

FL has, and always will beat most of the competition in price and in many cases be of equal quality products. However variety and "atmosphere" can be limiting at some locations. However I typically like the lower socioeconomic FLs as prices tend to be lower and not to sounds racists but I don't have to deal with Karen's and giant effing SUVs racing through parking lots bc late for goat yoga and bleach brown starfish appts.

Remember being in Atlanta in mid-90s when they first started expanding outside of Florida. Much juoy was shared by the Florida expat community.
Now in Midwest we have some that are solid but to me nothing beats Publix (or the ones I grew up with and the ones in the early Atl days).
No Food Lion here; but for low coast/value ALDI is the place in my corner of ‘Murica
