I'm posting this for information purposes. I'm certainly not qualified to discuss how private equity firms work in general, much less how they would work with athletic departments of universities.

Interesting, though like you I don't fully understand it. Generally it seems like those firms take an ownership position. What I do know is they are only doing it to capitalize on an opportunity to make money and it just seems like a seedy path for a university.

It would be interesting to replace the Athletic Director with a CEO that is appointed by the Board of Directors that's number one job is to increase share holder value.... ie, winning Natties. It is private equity, but I could see that quickly moving into publicly traded shares of stock on a open market where the school pays out a dividend to the share holders based on value of the program and revenue generation.

What to expect from a savage...they've been buying football teams for years...what a great investment in Tallahassee...as long as they can find someone to read a contract and not Welch when they think they've found a better...contracts really mean nothing in the sunshine...just suggestions! Law school is still writing a new course silibus for the adventures in contract law course...financed by MGM and Disney with a ps by ESPN!

I worked for a company that was owned by a Private Equity Firm

They were all about the bottom line and profit.

It wasn't about providing a superior product, great service, etc.... . As long as you made them money they were happy. Morals and ethics were only important so far as you didn't get caught doing anything illegal, and didn't damage the company's reputation.

One of the negatives I saw was that it attracted people who were money-crazed and would do anything to make a buck. Underneath the shiny façade was a business full of people who had made an idol out of their careers, so they would do whatever they needed to do to advance their own interests. (a Wolf of Wall Street type culture without any of the honest self-reflection)

Private Equity firms being in charge of college athletics sounds like another train-wreck waiting to happen.

Seems like when PE takes over a business like a retail or restaurant chain they don't care about anything but cutting, cutting, cutting expenses and then selling the assets to the highest bidder after the entity sinks.

Imagine one day soon that univ. athletic departments will run their budgets....

...based on loans from private equity firms just so they can afford NIL payments to their "student athletes". Does not seem so far fetched to me. The alternative is to go bankrupt trying to keep up with the competition. What a sports world we live in now.

Maybe it will turn out like LIV where you can buy shares of ownership in college teams. Good way for the schools to generate the extra revenue needed to pay their players (employees). The better brands will command a premium.
