If we win Saturday, aren’t we 1 of the top 5 seeds automatically?

It's the 5 highest ranked conference winners and the ACC would be one of the 5. The top 4 get a first round bye.

not automatically - the top 5 conference champions get in but no conference (cough cough) is guaranteed a spot

so theoretically if there were 5 other conference champions ranked ahead of us we would not get an auto bid

In the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff format starting with the 2024 season, conference champions are seeded as follows:

Automatic Bids: The five highest-ranked conference champions, as determined by the College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee, automatically qualify for the playoff.

Top Four Seeds: Among these five conference champions:
The four highest-ranked conference champions are seeded 1 through 4. These teams receive a first-round bye, advancing directly to the quarterfinals.

Fifth Highest-Ranked Champion:
The fifth highest-ranked conference champion will be seeded between 5 and 12, based on where it ranks in the committee's overall top 25 rankings. This team does not get a bye and must play in the first round.

First Round Matchups:
Teams seeded 5 through 12 play each other in the first round, with the higher seed hosting the game. The matchups are:
No. 5 vs. No. 12
No. 6 vs. No. 11
No. 7 vs. No. 10
No. 8 vs. No. 9

Quarterfinals and Beyond:
The winners of these first-round games then advance to face the teams that received byes (seeds 1-4) in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals are played in the New Year's Six bowl games, and the seeding determines which teams go to which bowls for these games.

Scenario:

-SEC conference champ includes a Texas or UGA team ranked above Clemson
-Big10 conference champ includes a Penn St or Oregon ranked above Clemson
-A Boise St conference champ is ranked above Clemson
-A B12 champ, BYU or Ariz St is ranked ahead of Clemson

That leaves Clemson as the 5th best conference champ.

If, somehow, UNLV is a conference champ and is ranked ahead of us, we aren't guaranteed a spot.

We would get an auto bid but likely be the 12 seed as we would be the lowest ranked conference champion . The top 5 conference champions get automatic berths and we would most likely be the lowest ranked and outside the rope 12, so we would get the 12 seed and play the 5 seed.

They didn't cost us anything if we don't beat SMU...

The coots didn’t cost us anything. We lost that game as a result of poor tackling, bad defense in the clutch, and offensive ineptitude. We have no one to blame but the friends and family coaching plan

I don’t think the coots cost us anything, really. Our poor performance, all the way around yesterday, cost us. It’s been a lingering problem all year, and we just never seemed to fix it. We’ve seen a mixed bag on offense and defense, and we’ve seen basically consistently poor performance all year on special teams. It’s up to our coaches to get this team ready to play, not just the seniors on the squad. We’ve seen a lot of very marginal play this year. Our team deserves better, and our fans do too.

If we win and Boise Wins the MWC we won’t get a bye.
If we win and UNLV wins, we will be ranked higher than them and will get a bye.

BIG ten, SEC champ would definitely be ranked higher. The Big 12 champ would be a toss up. Even if Boise wins and we win, we could still get a top 4 seed over the Big 12

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Those seeds go to the 5 highest-ranked

conference champs. There are 11 conference.

I got hung up on jargon like P4 or P5 and thought the champs from those conferences woul be seeded 1through 4 or 1 through 5.

But technically the Sun Belt conference championship could get one of those slots.

You may have already figured this out, but writing it helped me understand.

Not necessarily. I mean the chances are better now but until Tulane lost Thursday there were six conferences represented in the top 25. If Tulane won there was a chance Clemson may have finished behind them and not been in the Top 5 of Conference Champions.

If Tulane won and then won their Championship and with the Clemson loss and then win the ACCCG but still falling in behind Tulane the rankings of conference champs could have come out like this:

Big 10
SEC
Mountain West
Big 12
American
ACC

In that scenario Clemson would be left out.

But now that Tulane lost they will fall just like Clemson will fall. But Clemson will probably be ahead of them in the rankings. So the ACC Conference Champion will finish in front of the American conference champion no matter if it is Clemson or SMU.

Some of the wild scenarios are coming out in the first year of the 12 team CFP. If Clemson wins the ACCCG, SMU will most likely still be ranked higher than Clemson and get in. But Clemson, a conference champion, would be a lower seed than SMU in the playoffs. Clemson could possibly be a 15 or 16 ranked team and be in the playoffs. Pretty bizarre when you think about it.

doesnt matter SMU will (like every other decent team we played) beat us like they owe us money The rest is academic and we are going back to the blue field in Boise or the Mayo bowl
