Playoff Expansion is Wrong

Jan 7, 2022, 5:56 PM

I know its coming but only for financial reasons. We have done well with four. It hasn't failed us. Adding games is going to cause injuries that wouldn't otherwise have happened and eventually affect the outcome of the Championship. Some Heisman quarterback is going out playing a team with no chance and we'll all know the legitimacy of that title is tarnished.

past, too, but I don't know any years where the Natty winner has an asterisk beside their name because of it.

Someone in the top 4 will still win but expansion may change which one by adding the extra potential for injury. When it does I'll asterisk that in my book.

Well maybe they won't be opting out as much when they are making so much money now.

Without a doubt it will water the playoffs down, and it will cause more elite players to opt bc of the increased risk of injury by extending an already long season for college players. IMO, we may never again see the best team of a season be crowned as the National Champions bc of several elite players opting out!!!

No need to change unless it brings more money to every school in the country.

I agree, expanding it will make it worse. So far who has been left out that would have won it. Also, too many games for these kids. Already playing 12, conference champ, 1st round, & the final. A total of 15 games. I don't see schools giving up a regular season game and I don't see conferences giving up their champ. game.

Another cash grab by espn, ncaa ...

Agree, but for a different reason.

I every single year- there is a valid argument for the #3 team, but there is always a #4 (in retrospect) that clearly wasn’t on the same level as the other 3. There is zero reason to add more teams that simply don’t deserve to be there. They will simply dilute the regular season.

Wrong

Jan 8, 2022, 9:00 AM

on all counts. Not even close on any of these. I'll just pick one: injuries. Haven't you been watching at all? Injuries are like a pandemic now, any time of year, beginning to end. Athletes are bigger, faster, stronger, but yet their ligaments and tendons can't keep up with what they do to their muscles, strength, bodies.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’ve been saying this for years.

Jan 8, 2022, 12:04 PM

With modern training techniques and nutrition the human body is getting pretty close to peak potential in athletics. The skeletal frame can’t really handle much more than these OL and DL players in the NFL.

Every now and then you get an Usain Bolt that is just a freak of nature come along But for the most part we are seeing only small and incremental changes in performance over the last 10 to 20 years. Unless something new and radical comes along from a medical or scientific standpoint we have pretty much gotten close to peak potential in our current state of evolution.

Re: Playoff Expansion is Wrong but the Money is Right

Jan 8, 2022, 11:46 AM

Wrong but financially lucrative which makes it right.

First college administrators and regulators will dangle the carrot of NIL to college players and recruits (already in play). Next step will be instituting and tightening up transfer and payment rules. Next step will be making sure colleges, conferences and governing bureaucracies all cash in on expanding the playoffs.

Next step is top college players will play in playoff bowl games but not other bowl games, so playoffs will have to keep expanding. A small percentage of top players will get hurt, but the machine will keep moving and printing money. College football is now a professional sport open to the same level of team and player criticism of pro sports.

They will probably end up replacing all the bowls with some long ### playoffs that start mid December. No one cares about the bowls anyone with the playoffs happening.

Re: Playoff Expansion is Wrong

A more inclusive playoffs system precedes the championship game at every other level of football. I have yet to have heard any objective argument against playoff expansion that carries any significant weight. You know what is right? Settling it on blasted field! The current selection committee system is the most subjective process ever employed to select the top 4 teams. Probability alone would prove that the chances of them choosing the BEST 4 teams would be a shot in the dark at best. However, the more teams that are included the more the probability of including the BEST 4 teams increases. If you’re crazy enough to say playoff expansion is wrong then I’m crazy enough to say you should expand to a 64 team playoff. There are more just systems for qualifying for the playoffs in 8 and under football! You didn’t trust the coaches or the computers or the sports writers or public opinion, but we’re fine with 13 people in a smoke-filled room selecting the 4 BEST teams annually?!?! What on earth are you defending?!?! The current system is a crime against flippin’ humanity. You know what an eye-test is? You may have had one at the optometrist or the DMV.. but it is by NO means a just way to select a playoff team. That’s what we have right now, you know that, right? It’s an exclusive eye-test-qualifying system. It’s an absolute joke.

Re: Playoff Expansion is Wrong

I see the argument on both sides. For the health of college football I think 12 teams is the way to go. It keeps more teams excited about the chance of making the playoffs. With 2-3 games left in the season you could have 20 teams or more with a chance to get in. The more eyes watching college football the better.
