Players from the Dabo Era to get jersey retired

Of course CJ is excluded since his jersey is already retired. There's only been 3 guys in history so you know the criteria is stiff. Of the 3 guys with that honor, the main thing they have in common is that they were at least 2 times All-Americans. As crazy as it sounds, that actually rules out the 2 guys most people would think would be the top 2 obvious candidates in Deshaun (although technically his jersey is all ready retired) and Trevor. Sammy Watkins meets that criteria, but I don't quite think he quite makes the cut.

Travis Etienne is the no-brainer choice as he is a rare 3 time all American, national champion and the most decorated Tiger of all time. I think surprisingly, the 2nd most likely guy is actually Christian Wilkins IMO. He would be the first defensive player ever. He was an all American multiple years, won (2) Natties as an instrumental player (unmatched by any other Tiger), won what's considered to be the "Acadmic Heisman" award in the William Camp Trophy and was a foundational piece to the program.

I think we should retire #7 for Mike Williams

Not just because it’s his number, but it also happens to be the number of that weak cack DB who got a free ride to the end zone in what is my favorite play of the “rivalry”

But the two-time All-America designation is not a hard and fast criterion is it?

First level: Deshaun, Trevor, Etienne, Sammy, Nuk
Second level: Wilkins, Dex, Tee, Mike Williams, Isaiah Simmons
Third level: Tajh, Justyn Ross, Boulware, Hunter

I would never expect the guys on the third level, and prob not second level, to get a jersey retired, but these guys played with absolute heart and were instrumental in winning whatever was won in their years.

2 time all American is not a hard rule. It's just what the other 3 guys have in common. Also to be fair, Deshaun is considered a 2 time all American by some measures, but because he played at the same time as Lamar Jackson, he probably doesn't have as many college honors as he likely deserves.

Wilkins at Clemson was a dominant force in the middle...of course having Big Dex taking up a lotta room/blockers helps lol.

That entire defensive front was incredible while at Clemson. Ferrell/Lawrence/Wilkins/Bryant all had dominating performances and suffocated most offenses. Wilk & Dex still doing there thing but Bryant and Ferrell have tailed off pretty much completely

I think it has to be a beloved player as well...

not just solely accomplishments and stats......Wilkins really fits that well....he is a no doubter in my opinion. I think Deshaun gets the nod as well for everything he did...moreso than Trevor. then I'd say Etienne....most explosive and tough RB we have ever had...his YPC are elite, most yards on the ground as well....he has 20 more rushing TDs alone that Spiller does total TDs.

Deshaun's post-college issues are going to carry a lot of weight, negatively. He will need to be far-distanced from the rub-and-tug debacle before he's even in the conversation for being recognized by Clemson.

Remember only 3 guys ever had their jersey retired

You have to be top level, and not just good to be in this group. Travis has to be in there no doubt. However people sleep on Wilkins. He is inarguably the greatest "winner" in Clemson history. 55-4 record, 2 Natties, 4 ACC Championships, and he played an intrical part all 4 years. That is unmatched by any other Tiger. You also can't discount what he did outside of football academically and in the community while at Clemson. He is worthy of being the 1st Clemson defensive player to have his jersey retired IMO.

From an awards, caliber and accomplishment perspective I think it has to be Wilkins. If you go by best players, he's still in the conversation but you'd have to add DW4, ETN and TL16.

If you went only by beloved Tigers is there anybody more beloved from Dabo's era than Renfrow?

Trevor, Travis, and Christian.

No last names needed - everybody knows who you are and what you mean to this program.
