or the 90's. Really it seems to be something that has come along in the past 15 or so years.
Kids are definitely different today.

Changing the rules made things a lot easier. When kids had to sit out a year if they transferred, it made them think about it a lot more.

Another problem is the coaches. They get up and leave any time they want without any repercussions. As a matter of fact, they are rewarded for doing so.

you want your opportunity to leave where you work for what you consider a better opportunity limited?
Question today is, what exactly are players in this current environment?

A very good question. I'm not sure. My point about the coaches is that they want their players to be true to old CU, or OSU, whatever, but they just get up and leave any time they want. Seems like a double standard.

There are several reasons why these guys choose to leave their teams. It is playing time and also money so they’re jumping ship!

Same. Societal attitudes toward commitment etc. They received scholarships to play these games. The worst was Pickett for Pitt last year. Biggest bowl game in 40 years for his school and he sits. I wouldn’t have let him in the stadium unless he bought a ticket.

The comments are off base. If coaches can leave any time and everyone else on Camus can leave at any time--what is the problems with the players leaving at the same time.

My take is because the scholarships, tutors, premium facilities, premium catering and special treatment provided to the football players is far above the treatment that typical college students spend a lot of money for with far fewer perks.
The football players signed an agreement to trade their skill sets and dedication for a "free ride".
Times are changing, and I support the players, but some ground rules are needed to equal the playing field between conferences and colleges.

Had you asked that 5 years ago; I would have been in full agreement.
Now, I recognize it as a part of the game.
I see it differently as well. How good is your depth? How have you developed the backup players? Do you have a good system or did those players make the system?
A couple of things: 1. bowl season gives you extra practice for your team next season. 2. you get a headstart on where you are for the next season w/o players who won't be there anyway.
Yes, it's not a reflection of how well you played all year until that point. Yes, it's likely to have teams who would not have won; if the other team was fully loaded. But, the thing coaches liked so much about making a bowl from the beginning was the ability to get those extra practices in. If you aren't in the CFP, you may as well begin working on it next season! It also gives your seniors who aren't going pro a nice last game.

I used to be glued to the tv during bowl season. Now I watch the playoffs but almost never watch any other bowl games. Transfers, opt outs, etc equals no longer interested.

Bowl Season Used to be Fun
Dec 7, 2022, 9:45 PM
|
|
I used to love the unique matchups seeing some good teams that traditionally wouldn't face each other during the season get a shot at each other at their best in the post season.
I think what started to kill bowl season were the conference tie ins -- it started to lose its luster around that time for me. Sure, seeing players opt out can be a bummer but I much prefer the old system where conference tie-ins weren't a bigger thing.
Moving some bowls to the beginning of the football year in August may be the way to go to rejuvenate interest because let's face it...the more the playoffs expand the less attention that will be on non-playoff games.

Good Idea! I think BretFSU had a similar idea.
And with an expanded playoff, playing a tough opponent won't destroy your season. It will show you where you need to improve and hopefully help a team take a step toward improvement by the end of the season.
It makes sense though; so "the powers that be won't do it"!

of the Chic-Fila bowl. He suggested that the bowl games, except for those tied into the playoff, be moved to the end of spring practice, late April or early May! This may make sense...no opt outs then, because we would be looking at the next season's teams.

Bowl games have become meaningless...
Dec 8, 2022, 7:50 AM

.... for seniors and those leaving for the NFL.
They will become even more meaningless when the playoff expands.
Once upon a time, there may be 4 teams who thought they had a chance to win the championship if they won their bowl game. Once upon a time being a bowl champion was a worthwhile goal.
But, those times have past. Never to return.
