Patent Attorney Reckomendations?

So I had an idea years ago. I modified a widget to make it easier to remove after being installed in a factory for a few years.
We removed widget today, and it made a multi-hour job take about 4 minutes. A widget salesman who's been in the biz for about 20 years saw it and said, "dude that's seriously a million dollar idea". If you don't run and get it patented, you're a fool. NOBODY in the industry is doing this. You're a genius."
It got me thinking... I should probably act on it. This widget is used everywhere in industry. It has almost limitless applications, and it solves a very real problem.
Already I've said too much.
Anybody ever gone through the process of getting intellectual property patented? Any recommendations?

Initial searches on USPTO and patents.google.com yield nothing even remotely close to this, so I guess that passes the initial "sniff test".

issue under 35 U.S.C. 102. With some limited exceptions such as experimental use, you must file a US Patent application no later than one year after it has been used or been shown to the public

5 people are even aware that it exists. It was definitely done as an experiment.
The bigger question pertains to my employers claim to the IP.
This widget that I modified... We don't make these widgets, we don't sell these widgets... it's just a tiny component of our process equipment that is used in all sorts of industrial processes.
I never signed any sort of contract when I hired on here, that I recall, giving them rights to my IP.
Plus, I'm not a designer... I work in maintenance, and I hold no PE license, not that it matters.
I think the pertinent thing would be to just not say anything to anybody at work about any pursuits with this, and more than likely, they'd be none-the-wiser.

then sue for the rights to said widget because you made it on their time.

if anything, I would sell the idea off to a major manufacturer, or license it to one or more. I think it would be best served as a selling point for an existing major-player in this sort of machinery. It wouldn't be a very good stand-alone product, IMHO. This product going world wide, wouldn't really affect my company one way or the other, not even one iota. It would be an afterthought.
The flip side is that maybe there's not much money to be made anyway, so just let our corporate lawyers see if they want to do the patent work and maybe get my name on a plaque somewhere, and maybe they give me a Yeti cooler or throw a few sheckles my way as a "thank you".

right now anyway, I sell several products that supposedly have a patent but I see knock offs of the same thing everywhere I go that are directly interchangeable.

while patent law is federal, ownership can be a state issue

initially, all patent rights vest with the inventors which is defined as anyone who materially contributes to even one claim in a patent. However, by function of an agreement, including an employment agreement, or in some cases the common law, the ownership, or a portion of it, can vest in another person or an entity. So, it will depend on what state you are in. It is possible that you own the rights, if any, in the invention but your employer may have "shop rights" in the invention as well.
