OT - need advice for scamming the elderly

i work at a skilled nursing facility in North Carolina. I have a resident who is notorious for "helping" folks he has met on Facebook or online. they are clearly scamming him, but their anonymous accounts are contacting my resident asking for a gift card on the basis that they need food or they will hand him the title of a car if they have an apple gift card. It is super sad, but basically someone is taking advantage of a resident who is, lonely, gullible, and has a mental illness.

I would love to hear your experiences in the situation, or any advice on how to nail these anonymous solicitors. makes me sick, any advice on how to bust them is greatly appreciated. thanks - Go Tigers!

Anyone asking for gift cards is a scammer.

Very unlikely that you will bust them. Most of them live overseas

Where our government has no jurisdiction. And they aren’t going to go after them until they get too greedy. I hate it too. But other than”reporting to authorities” and I don’t know who those authorities are, not much you’re going to do.

Very wealthy family. I believe it was his first week. He got a text from the phone number and showed name (because in contacts) of someone he would answer to. It told him to go and buy a bunch of gift card and told him the amount and what companies. So he does. Then he goes to that person and says I have those gift cards you wanted me to get. And he says I didn’t ask you to do that. Thankfully it was close to Christmas (probably part of why he fell for it) and they were able to give them away to employees as gifts.

I would approve of the Christians In Action teaming with Delta Force and leaving a few heads on a post. The word would get out fast. But Lefties would call that being mean.

Best thing you can do is delete his Facebook acct. Set up email acct. With certain words that would send that email to scam folder Words like " help, money, gift cards, respond immediately, UPS, FED EX, URGENT." THOSE WORDS ARE USUALKY A SCAMMER EMAIL. Does he receive legitimate email? Does he live in assisted living or full time care? Does he have family? Sounds like being on internet is his problem. Solve that and scamming problem solved.

When my father was 92 and living in Rock Hill in an independent living facility, he was under a constant barrage of scammers with some of the most unbelievable stories you had ever heard. The only way I got him to stop giving his money to these scams was to threaten to have a Judge put me in charge of his bank accounts. He said he didn't think a Judge would do that, I said I think he will when I tell him you have been giving your money to a fortune teller in France! It was one of the hardest things I had ever done and the look on his face was the most heartbreaking look I had ever saw, but it saved him from being broke and homeless.

If you ask your patient for permission to access his account (facebook or online email) after explaining to them they are being scammed......you can easily usually lure the perps into identifying themselves by setting up a honeypot (lure) of sorts.

Over 10 years ago i was able to identify 2 people who were involved in an almost 100 million dollar hospital scam, they were currently on an fbi wanted list at the time and had not been caught.......they are now caught, and i am not an undercover agent of any kind.

You could be helping out more people than just your clients if you identify them, there often well versed scammers and do it for a living, you have to play dumb and act clueless at times, if they smell something they will dissapear in an instant.

I had a guy pose as my pastor a few years ago. He text me from a strange number asking for a gift card for one of the church members that had fallen on hard times. Obviously I called my actual pastors cell and he told me it was a church wide scam and not to send him anyting. Our information had leaked somehow. I went into great detail with the scammer, asking him questions about how I needed to send him the gift card, telling him I would drop it off at his house, Then that I would bring it to him at the church, that I would just bring him cash instead ect.. I really had this scammer pissed off after about 40 text messages back and forth. To conclude my conversation I let him know I was aware of his scam and told him I was glad to waste some of his time since he was happy to waste some of mine.

Their style and lack of correct grammar is usually a dead give away.

I also don't want them to scam anyone else. I am sure its a numbers game where even if 2% fall for it then its worth it to them.

It just infuriating to me when anyone takes advantage of someone who can't fend for themselves,
