Oscar Week Trivia #2 - The Long and Short of it, again

This short, 90-minute feature took advantage of an average field to bring home Best Picture. But the real surprise was that it also won Best Actor, over stellar competition.

The winner was no Hollywood leading man by any measure, but he was perfect for this role as a homely mama's boy who finally spreads his wings as a middle-aged man. And no, it's not The-40-Year-Old-Virgin.

He beat out James Cagney, James Dean, Frank Sinatra, and Spencer Tracy to take home Best Actor.

What's the movie and/or actor?

No winners?

The movie is Marty from 1955, with otherwise-tough-guy Ernest Borgnine (who played the heavy in Bad Day at Black Rock the very same year)

Here Marty explains to Mama over supper that he'll never find true love...

But even without love, a Best Actor Award over Tracy, Sinatra, and Dean feels pretty good

it was OK for an old movie.

Never occurred to me it would be Oscar material. But what do I know about that.

55 was just not a very strong year.

Dean probably should have won for East of Eden, and Tracy was good in Bad Day at Black Rock.

BDatBR was LOADED with stars, but just didn't quite gel as an Oscar worthy movie. Despite the star power of Tracy, Borgnine, Walter Brennan and Lee Marvin, it didn't even get a nomination for Best Picture.

It could have been fantastic...has an element of mystery, an ominous and foreboding aura, and an interesting final twist, but just it just didn't pan out.

The director just couldn't make the story sing, which is weird because he also directed The Great Escape, The Magnificent 7, and Ice Station Zebra.

55 was a better year for other reasons

I for one am glad you are stopping. You are one of the most ignorant posters ever. You obviously think very highly of your own opinion, unlike the rest of us - RockHillTiger
