with little or no experience. I questioned him one time, Hunter Renfrow's scholarship. Well, we know how that turned out and I have learned to keep my mouth shut. I'm going to sit back and see how all of this pans out.

Dabo’s decision making has worked out so far. To the tune of the best Clemson football program in the 126 year history of playing the sport.
He makes almost a million a month now. So it’s fair to expect some pretty good decisions.
I watched an interview he gave on his decision making for the current OC/DC hires. Seemed sound to me. He sees their day to day performance and promoted from within. I’m fine with that.
Now it’s on to setting expectations and accountability. He’s already publicly called out the defense on readiness and effort. That’s a direct reflection on Goodwin. We weren’t privileged to those insights. But I’m sure they occurred.
He rarely does that public flogging on the offense. I wish he would sometimes. As that’s my own personal frustration with this team’s current performance in the o-line and receiving units.

To your point NWP, I think Dabo is a pretty savvy leader - and motivator. Our defense is a proven, mature, veteran led group. As such, they can be addressed in the way Dabo did. The offense, on the other hand - last year and now - is none of the above. Thus, ‘challenging them’ in the way he has the defense, would probably not work.

I do think the offense is a ‘more fragile’ (for lack of a better descriptor) group. Therefore, bypassing the internal chain of command for feedback/correction and going straight to a public forum is problematic.
I would like to see him avoid the impression I got last season. We fans(at least this fan) got almost no information on the offense thru the spring and fall practices. Three losses later, we turned into a run focused team to get to 10 wins. Credit to him for that move. But that was reactive. I expect a 11 million dollar executive to be proactive.
This season we’ve been told the o-line play would be improved. I haven’t seen that yet, maybe it’s coming. If not, it’s going to be touch and go to even win the ACC. (NCST, UM and WF will be in the game if we can’t score point or at a minimum move the ball)
All that said. DJ has shown the most improvement out of our three offensive position AFIs from last year. Kid gloves on the remaining is getting old for me personally.

I really appreciate the above comments and analysis...I think they are spot on.
Dabo is a great leader, and he knows he can lean into his 'tougher' guys/units publicly. Last year with TE and DJ it was all coach speak. We've seen Dabo chew out Potter, and he is arguably one of the best kickers we have (possibly ever, scoring wise, depending, etc).
He went after 'Murph most recently. That's because he probably anticipated an emotional and slim depth chart with LA Tech. Dabo only challenges players/departments publicly because he knows that a. they are tough and b. they can be better.
So the question becomes, does lack of "calling out" certain spots indicate weakness? Hmmmm...

Im also personally frustrated with the O-Line the last several years, and the Blake Miller sunshine pump has made me skeptical, especially after a similar Brockhurst pre-season narrative last season.
BUT-I do believe in Coach, and I do believe Austin deserves some grace while we put the pieces together. Same for Streeter and Grish...the latter being a larger concern.
And just to needlessly throw fuel on the bonfire like a 16 year old...atleast we got rid of Tony Elliott!
(Some sarcasm, some truth)

Dabo has not really miffed at identifying talent in coaching staff. Really, he has been better at identifying rising talent more than some other big programs that just recycle names. The Chad might be the closest "miff" but still, it was the right move at the right time. Steele wasn't half bad, very good... but when he was bad it was horrific. Napier while inexperienced at the time is still a good coach and with a unafraid QB might have hung on. BV, TE, and JS. Even Reed is in that group.

If if I understand correctly you are using Hunter Renfrow as a reason to believe every other decision Dabo makes is the best possible decision?
BTW Dabo took no risk with Renfrow. He did not offer Hunter out of HS but waited until after he proved himself on the practice field so offering him a scholarship was a no brainer.
Dabo has done a nice job of identifying under the radar coaching talent. The coaches have typically done a good job but the question is are the coaches he hired the very best choice for Clemson? We have one of the highest paid coaching staffs in all of college football. Dabo basically has his choice of who to hire yet we choose guys with no P5 experience or in some cases zero coaching experience. Who he hires is obviously his decision but as fans who pay the bills we have a right to question the decision when the product seems to be underperforming.
Look at one example. Dabo hired Todd Bates who played with Dabo and his only experience was coaching at a small school. Bates did a good in both coaching and recruiting. Most thought he was not great but good. Notice what happened when Dabo hired Nick Eason. Recruiting instantly improved as Eason had the reputation of a top tier coach. So the question on the table is what would our recruiting look like and what would our on the field offensive performance look like if we had hired top tier RB and WR coaches instead of coaches with little to no experience? Would our RB room look like UGAs or Bama's? Would our WR room look like Ohio St's WR room in terms of talent? Would our WRs struggle to catch passes which hit them in the hands?
Its not a sin to question our coach and in fact the healthiest programs welcome the scrutiny as it means the fan base is invested in the program.

Then why the need to post about it instead of letting it simply "pan out"?
Because it threatens his belief system and bothers him deeply. And I would suspect he actually feels that way himself. But there are narratives to follow and points to earn.

Are you suggesting that MyFO using Hunter Renfrow…
Sep 14, 2022, 11:46 AM

as an example of a time he doubted Dabo, but it worked out, might not be evidence that MyFO thinks every decision by Dabo is correct, 100% of the time? Or that turning every response into a series of questions is similar in style to another poster? Is that what you are saying? Am I understanding you correctly here?

How is this different from watching these coaches in the program, seeing how they perform, and then promoting from within?

My questions to you are -
Who are two more successful college coaches in the game right now?
Has Dabo made good decisions, or has he just gotten lucky?
The only hire that didn't go well for Dabo or advance the program was Napier, and that was an internal move when he just came out of the gate.

Those coaches took a struggling and under performing team last year and etched out a 10 win season and a bowl victory. I think I'll give them a chance. I think Dabo will do what is best for the team, IE: replace coaches if the need arises. Maybe the best will be holding onto the coaches we currently have. Time will tell. In the meantime, I'm just going to love watching Clemson football.

Dabo has earned the right to hire whomever he pleases.
However, I don’t feel that having concerns about certain decisions made is inappropriate either.
People question and criticize politicians about their political decisions, actors about their movie performances, etc. Football coaches shouldn’t be immune to that either.

Count the number of walk-ons that received a scholarship from Dabo that are currently in the NFL.
Then count the number of walk-ons that received a scholarship from Dabo but did not make it to the NFL.
I feel like that data is important.

I think a lot more folks question a lot of different things. But those TU’s and % means more to a lot of people then honest respectful debates and discussion. On a board designed for that very thing. But the system does it’s job, obviously. My opinion on your post is how can anyone in their right mind now fairly question the inexperienced coaching staff? How many times can lighting be caught in a bottle here at Clemson? There’s no Watson or Lawrence anywhere here. There’s no Tee, Mike Williams or Sammy or Nuke. Our offense is after 2 games 87th nationally coming off a year where it was 100th nationally. If you don’t have questions, concerns or even wondering thoughts about the staff, I doubt you care that much. Concern is warranted and doesn’t make you a “Coot”. JMO

Agree totally with this post. Dabo is a culture coach, and a good one. The moto is that "The Best Is Standard." I believe that he feels he is not getting the best out of his staff, and players, he will make changes, based on his track record. In addition, he just called out players, coaches in his press conference this week with the media. The man knows how to do his job, and he is good at doing his job.
