of the ingrained competitiveness of Clemson's Football program, and the overall personal qualities long since mentored by Coach Swinney.
Yet it will be publicly misunderstood by some.... That’s because, over the years, TNET has taken the high-risk decision to allow generationally talented commenters like Rev Dodd, Joe21, ShoelessCU, 71PR, KIPTAY, and others from the 70's, 80's, and 90's that I regrettably cannot name by memory, to be replaced with youngsters and keyboard hacks lacking worldly experience and better-rounded perspectives, lacking basic maturity and self-awareness. The overall talent here for commenting and even-handed analysis seems to have been eroded gradually with each new trophy won by Coach Swinney. That this was masked for a couple of years by the simple joy we shared in winning now seems obvious.
Yes, there will be naysayers to my proposition, childishly defensive types who deflect rather than introspect; and I'm thinking it's just inexperienced, uber-teened, petty-minded couch potatoes that's the problem. Raw, former 2A high-school football backups; failed soccer team members graduated to never-heard-from-again garage band dropouts; and over-indulged never-were’s whose well-off daddies coached them in hacky-sack until age 19, is no doubt the talent pool drawn from too often now. Indeed, where are the philosophers, and poets, and mountaintop prophets?
Clearly, these new commenters just don't truly Respect the mountain that was climbed as Coach Swinney's program achieved the fragile heights of the last 12 years. They don't Respect the absolute commitment shown by its Head Coach, its players, its staffers and families, and yes, even its Assistant Coaches, in those untold and unseen multitudes of hours necessary to prepare repetitively CFP-worthy teams.
Further, these commenters seem to have no Respect for the personal effort and insight it takes to mature as a true fan while benefitting from such glory either. Instead, they'd rather pop-off at any childish emotion they can formulate like they never outgrew the terrible-two’s.
They have literally no idea of the Men of the Clemson Football Program: indeed, “brothers in manhood” as from our Alma Mater; brothers in a world that actively devalues Men virtually every step of every day. They have no idea that these are Men in a struggle for Life, not headlines; a struggle for true achievement, not overrated prime-time glitz. That's why they're not in Boulder, and not in Tallahassee, and not in College Station or Oxford or Knoxville or Athens.
Instead, that's why they're here where the Blue Ridge yawns its greatness, where the mountains smile in grandeur, where the Tigers reign supreme....
Comments made by Veteran TNET-ters reveal this, their frustration not being with the team, but instead with loud-mouth, barely Coot-worthy fans. Without wholesale changes by some on this site, overly-emotional commenters will continue to exhibit frustration in the most profane and inappropriate ways. I hope B-Meist and Crump have the guts to take out the Trash now, and all of it – to have the guts for the drastic changes necessary to fix these issues today.

is indeed "calling out my background".
And I personally don't care for being "well-respected" on a Clemson site that seems intent on protecting whiney beattches.
Again, you want to suggest that my post is about being pretentious or such. No; maybe I'm just waiting for the know-it-alls to grow a little maturity instead of whining about everything they can find.
So what Spiller and Shipley yelled at each other, maybe even brushed up against each other? I bet Danny Ford laughed out loud when he saw people make a big deal about that. Danny had that carp happen 3-5 times a game in his day, and he was involved 80% of the time.
It's called "competitiveness"
and you flipping Dolly Madisons can turn your cooking show back on now instead of interrupting our Football game.

A) a player wouldn’t have tried that crap with Danny or his staff.
B) if they did, it would have been the only time they got to try it.
You can go ahead and keep coddling Ship just like his mommy did all his life. You’re probably one those parents who high fives their kids when they get in trouble for swearing at the teacher cause it makes em a winner!!!

I think it is a big deal. It's called a loss of composure and not an act of competitiveness. We saw it from Beaux, we saw it from Kitchens at Duke wagging his finger at the crowd after a tackle while we were 3 TDs down late in the game, etc.
This team lacks discipline and part of this is player maturity and part of it is coaching. Things just don't look right from a team who is historically very disciplined and well coached. You never saw Dabo putting up with any of this in the past.
There is just a different look this year and I hope it starts to get corrected against FSU.

they don't have to discuss disciplinary action. We'll have no idea what came of that unless they choose to divulge. One of the best indicators of team "discipline" however is penalties. We're tied for 9th in the country.
9th Fewest Penalties 11th Fewest Penalties Yards
If we stay top 20 that would be the best in Dabo's tenure. In our 6 year CFP run we were 32, 83, 33, 27, 28, and 51. We were 49 and 61st in the DJU era - a time when we could ill afford it. Sheer talent probably hid some issues in 2016 when we gave up an average of 58 yards a game in penalties.
Even more ridiculous - we gave up 65 yards in penalties to VT in the ACC championship and 72 against Ohio State. We tightened up dramatically in the championship game against Alabama. We gave up 35 yards to there 82. Discipline is pretty important.

20th in offense. New QB, new coach, new system. 8th in defense.
And, gasp, 9th in fewest penalties.
If we didn’t crap the bed inside the 5 yd line against Dook, then maybe some of these dudes would see the forest through the trees.
Cade is starting to get it. TCU took a moment with a veteran QB.
Defense has been good, obviously a big test this weekend. All 3 levels have players flashing. They are loaded with talent, and we’ll see a solid scheme and more fire this weekend for sure. We have some dudes really amping up their games on this side of the ball.
The offense is gaining it’s stride. Cade is slowing down and we’re finding several good receivers now that we have a QB who can deliver the ball accurately and on time. Granted he’s not a ready made NFL guy, but he’s got great skills. It’s slowing down for him now, I’m positive the offense will keep learning this system and moving forward.
There are some athletes stepping forward on both sides of the ball, and they’ll be chomping at the bit by Saturday morning.
So yeah, it’s not as bad as some folks want to believe. Let’s go!

You have no sense of perspective on the program, and you've convinced yourself that Dabo is the best thing to happen to the entire University to the point that your cognitive dissonance extends to you painting a player getting physical with a coach during a game on national TV as proof of Dabo's excellence.
I'm just glad you imprinted on Dabo and not Jim Jones.

The oldest Clemson fan on the planet would acknowledge that Dabo is the best football coach and his success has led to the biggest financial windfall and growth of the University's profile in history or he's gone senile. I didn't really get the same take away from the op. I didn't like the appearance but I think it's the kind of thing that is handled internally. It doesn't require explanation or suspension. If it happens again I expect we'll see Shipley hit to portal. They didn't hesitate to point Lyn-J to the portal when he was throwing attitude around. And depth seemed more of an issue than it does now. I feel like Mafah can be an every down back and backups are showing they can certainly fill in as necessary.

Let's just point out that Shipley yelled at an Asst Coach
Sep 17, 2023, 5:37 PM
|
|
and not the Head Coach.
Shipley neither yelled at Swinney, nor at Ford.
As far as I am concerned, Shipley yelling at Spiller, and Spiller yelling at Shipley is all for nought. Spiller is Shipley's immediate boss, and sometimes feelings need to be vented and hashed out. Not being honest about frustrations never gets them solved. Is there a better way for Shipley to do it? Possibly. But maybe not while someone is yelling at you from the sideline as you're getting ready to face a 4th down.
So, nothing to see here, just pure competitiveness and being in the moment, for the both of them.
Trying to make suggestions about team "composure" or "discipline" is horse-hockey with a capital S, H, and T.
Having said that, if I were Shipley, I'd make sure to find Mr. Spiller on Sunday and apologize. He is the boss, after all.
