Dan used to hang pictures on the wall of all of the then current football, basketball and baseball players. You can see some of those photographs in the picture.

Dan’s was not there in the 70’s. My freshman year was ‘70-‘71 and Dan’s had closed in the late 68 or 69 timeframe. It caught on fire at some point and then Dan had a heart attack and died. I went there for the first time around 1962 or 63 as well as when my older brothers attended Clemson before I did. I always loved the pictures of all the current players and past players all over the walls. Quite impressive!

which was to go down the dorm hall and get food orders from the upper classmen. Two rats would then go to Dan's and bring back the food. This was all part of Rat Season, which in the late 60s was a hold over from the military days.
Dan's was a great place to get a burger at a reasonable price. Yes, it was located where TDs is now.

Summer of '68 I had a meal ticket which they punched out the meal cost from. And all those pictures of former athletes, boxers, swimmers, basketball, no matter. All the greats were there. He closed every spring to follow the baseball team on their annual southern tour. Sorry you younguns missed it. Truly the best hamburger in town.

Old memories are great. In the early 60's, I was lucky enough to go to games with my grandparents and we would either eat lunch at Dan's or the Clemson House before going to the game. In the late 60's I would be able to get in the West End gate because our high school coaches could get kids in on the High School League passes.

That picture was from 1967 based on the football schedule posted on the marquee. Growing up in Clemson, Dan's made a great place to "swipe" a rat hat when we were kids, just don't get caught! I remember that before Dan's caught on fire, he had a picture of Dr. Hunter on the boxing team who was my family doctor. We always had our pregame meal at Dan's before our high school football games. great memories!

The thing I remember most about The Corporation was that Monday night was college night and you could get .50 cent longnecks.
My memory is a little fuzzy but after Dan's closed, it became the Tiger Paw Restaurant and later just Tiger Paws.
In the late 70's it was The Bookstore.
The Bookstore closed and reopened as Strawberry’s
Strawberry's would become The Corporation
When the Corporation closed, it became Lester’s
Finally, the location became TD’s sometime in 1988.

we moved to Clemson in 1975, that little building at the intersection was Red Parker's Ice Cream shop. I have a photo of it somewhere. These old pics are great, look forward to more.

I remember Dan's very well from when I was a student at Clemson in the 60's. Another restaurant that we went to was over in Pendleton. I cannot remember the name of it, but it was a refurbished railroad car. The also had excellent hamburgers

When Dan first opened, you got your food, ate and paid on your way out. His wife Frances, was the cashier. The customer told Frances what they had ordered so it was the old honor system. Unfortunately, there were too many diners without honor so they made a change. The customers went down the serving line and at the end of the line was Frances.
Dan and Frances were my next door neighbors for several years. I had about 30 guys for a steak dinner in my back yard . Dan did the catering. Brought a grill, his help, food and every thing he needed. Cleaned up afterwards and my bill was less than $100.00.

Lots of good stuff in here about Dan's. When I enrolled in 1968 I think Dan's was still in its old time classic shape. The place was full of old black and white photos of Clemson athletes, the burgers were good, the location was very good and as I recall the place did a fine business. Alas, all good things come to an end.
After Dan died, Mrs. Gentry went to work for the Clemson Canteen. She worked briefly in the main location under the loggia, then moved over to the small Canteen in the basement of Lever Hall. Mrs. Gentry was the evening manager of the Lever Hall Canteen for at least several years. I worked for the Canteen for four years while I was in school and for the last year or so I worked most nights at the Lever Hall Canteen. Mrs. Gentry was a sweet lady.
Butch Gentry was an excellent punter and wanted to play at Clemson. Alas the 800 rule meant he could not play as a scholarship athlete at Clemson and so Butch played at Tennessee Tech. The memory is fuzzy but I think I recall that Butch kicked professionally for a short time in one of the minor leagues that came and went back in that time frame.
(A couple of tangents: Tiger Tavern in the basement of The Clemson House was open and operating in 68 and I think 69. The Red Carpet was a fried chicken place in 68 and was very basic; they served fried chicken and the seating was on picnic tables. Over the summer of 69, the Red Carpet was remodeled and the back portion became a bar. I think it only took the owners a year to conclude there was more money in beer than in chicken and I believe The Red Carpet existed largely as a watering hole for quite awhile. The Study Hall was open in the fall of 1967 when I visited Clemson for the first time. It was a small place but was always packed from 68 onward.)

I was conceived in the basement apartment of The Cowens at 108 Sunset Ave., just above The Esso Club...My first real memory of Clemson was being taken to Dan's by my dad before a football Saturday...I was in total awe of the player photos above our booth... Not to mention the "giant" students walking by ...Still remember the schedules above the door...

I recall 2 days into my freshman year my next door neighbor in the 8th barracks, Darwin Flanders a tight end on the football team, came over one night when I was studying. He said rat, you're going to Dan's. I thought he said "to dance" and we were about ready to square off. He of course meant Dan's for a burger run. We turned out to be good friends that year. Several years later I learned that he died when the helicopter he was piloting went down in Vietnam. He was a good guy.

There was no bigger Clemson fan than Dan Gentry! In the late 50's and early 60's my mom would drop us off in Greenville at the White Horse Drive-In theatre on 123 and we would hitch hike over to Clemson for football games with a dollar in our pocket. For that dollar we could go to Dan's and eat and go to the football game (admission $.50). Afterwards we would hitch hike home. Not too many 12 year olds would be allowed to do that now.
I also made many a rat run for upperclassmen to Dan's my freshman year. Dan also had a son, Butch who I think probably went to Clemson, but after me ..... probably in the 70's. Anyone know what happened to him?

Butch did not go to Clemson. I believe he went to Tennessee Tec h or Middle Tennessee. He was my neighbor through his high school years. In later years and after his marriage he was working in an upscale men's clothing store in Tennessee. I don't remember the city but I stopped by two or three times to see him. Lost contact after his Mother died.

Dan was a great guy, as well as his family.... Mrs. Frances, Lynn, and Butch. I grew up and played football and baseball w/ Butch. He used to drag bats for Coach Wilhelm as a kid in the early 60's. What a great athlete. One heck of a baseball player...batter and arm CF....and superb punter and place kicker....as well as a linebacker and runner. More so, a great teammate. He left Clemson after high school and played for Don Wade @ Tenn. Tech. , mainly as a kicker. He had a brief career in the old WFL. He died from cancer a few years ago in Hoover AL.

One of my favorite memories of Clemson was during the fall of 1963. A high school classmate, whose brother had played basketball at Clemson, and I got our mothers to write an excuse for skipping the last few classes for a "trip out of town". So we drove from Greenville on Hwy 123 which I think was still tar and gravel prior to the final paving. We ate at Dan's and then took in the CU - Duke JV game. One of the players for us was Connie Wade from Rock Hill who had been a notable recruit. Always enjoyed Dan's burgers and getting to view the photos on the walls. Didn't learn about Mac's Drive In until the late seventies as I had always taken Hwy 123 to get to Clemson even when I commuted to class. Begin going a back way near Pendleton after the first deck was completed and the 123 stretch thru Easley got much busier on game day.

I think your date is a year off. Connie Wade was in my class that started in 1964. Connie was a Catawba Indian and all-state tight end. Connie and Coach Howard didn't get along real well and Connie never realized his potential.

you are right. Connie had a lazy streak and was too involved with a couple of coeds that were imfamous at the time. I was a football manager and remember one spring Connie threw his helmet at Coach Howard and walked off the field and the team.

We were all neighbors near Highland Dr. I was a few years older, and know all about Pete and his greatness starting at the feet of his Father, Press, who was coach at Clemson then, however Dan's son turned into a good fb player, but do not know what happened to him. Anybody?

I attended Clemson 63-67. Several days before I enrolled, Dan had a serious fire and was closed for a couple of months. He had the best hamburgers I have ever eaten, and none others have come close. Those big burgers were 35 cents each.
I was president of an organization my senior year, and our annual dinners were at a steakhouse in Anderson. About a week prior to our dinner, the steakhouse cancelled out on us. I went to see Dan asking if he knew a place for our dinner. He responded, "You can have your dinner here." I didn't know that he had a back room.
He quoted me a dollar per meal below what we had been paying in Anderson. Those steaks were much better than the Anderson place, and we had a great time that night.
Clemson never had a greater fan. I loved sitting near him at baseball games.

Butch Gentry was3-4 years younger than Pete. He went to East Tennessee St. on scholarship as a punter. Butch passed away a few years ago.

Another great thing about Dan was that he tried to help the students out with inexpensive meals. In 1968-1970, I used to get one large pancake (20 cents) and a cup of coffee (5 cents), plus one cent tax every morning: 26 cents for breakfast! For lunch/dinner you could get one meat and two vegetables, with roll, for $1 plus four cents tax. He was a kind, generous man who has been missed for many years.
