One Man's Sober Take from Being at the Game

53

Sep 24, 2023, 3:10 PM

I'm not sure if the sunshine pumpers are still around, but I'm not trying to be disrespect or anyone out...just beware that I feel this is an objective observation now that I have had 24 hours to digest/review think on it.

We had a very good game plan for the offense/Cade the first half. I believe Riley is assessing and changing/adapting every week as he gets more and more familiar with our players, process, etc. I though we did especially well in pistol and/or 2-back sets.

Our O-Line has shown some improvement this year IMHO, but our Center position shows the signs of the 'cross-training' idea. Putnam is not a bad player. Lithicum, well, has yet to live up to anything we thought he was. FSU's D-Line and backers were attacking our A-Gaps all game which clogged up Mafah (who looked fantastic) and Shipley (who also looked solid).

Still the O-Line is not helping Cade, who is with his amount of experience is still a jumpy gunslinger.

Game plan did not seem to cater to Cade's arm, or trust him in throwing for deep plays (i believe we had 2+ 20yard passes, correct me if I'm wrong). We desperately missed A. Williams and should have used J. Brinngingtool more often in #0's absence for the short yard passes.

After the scoop and score in the third, the playbook seemed to get thrown out the window and Cade was able to come off his leash. He over threw receivers. Receivers also quit on their routes. Grisham has to go. Period. Full stop. We have Jeff Scott int he wings, our recruit are top notch, but they don't convert. That's a coaches fault.

With six seconds left in RT, Cade was trying to line up but kept looking to the sideline. That should have been a spiked ball so we got the additional possession in decent field location.

Clock management is on Dabo. I'll never, ever, ask for any head coach them him, but these were critical errors.

Lastly, the Clemson I know and believe in shouldn't need a kicker to decide the game. Let alone we should not be pulling a kid out of the start of his career to come in as a band-aid. Seems actually quite anti "Paw Journey" and developing young men for the later years philosophy (which I adamantly support).

It was a very fun game to watch in the stands in the broiling heat. FSU fans in my section were the bet behaved I've ever seen, and I congratulated them on their win. We played better I believe, and they did not play their best game, but they CONVERTED when it counted. Turnovers were not a problem for them.

If Jeff Scott doesn't want to take on the WR position, then maybe we can get Drew Dudzik from Furman or possibly Jamey Chadwell (that's a pretty big ask).I think coach Austin's group has shown some improvement, but we need better results sooner than later.

I do not personally believe we are developing OL or WR's at current, if anything they are regressing. I think we need a good look at our coaching staff if Best is the Standard.

Feel free to skip reading this, it's a long post but I tried to be as honest/objective a I could be.

I think that is an accurate assessment. Program is not elite and hasn’t been since the loss to LSU. Nobody is going to stay on top forever. Alabama is experiencing this problem also.. I do believe they should have replaced the whole offensive staff last season and not just Streeter.

Well said. They difference between beating a team on paper and on the scorebaord is coaching. Right now ours is poor. I think Venables departure was a bigger loss than people realize. He was the tactician to Dabos program manager.

8th or not we lost the game. In my opinion (and no im not a football expert, just a fan/alumni), Wes gets timid in his playcalling on defense. The drive before half is a prime example. Instead of keeping the pedal down, we go prevent and allow Travis to drive the length of the field. Additionally, 2 of our 4 games have been against FAU and Charleston Southern. That alone makes the defensive ranking all but pointless.

with the exception of the drive just before halftime the defense shut down FSU's offense. FSU's offense had 3 points in the second half. 4 first downs, 2 of those came on their last series of regulation. unfortunately, they took advantage of a hurt Wiggins to score the wining TD in OT. For anyone to blame this on the DC and Defense really doesn't know much about football. No Wes shouldn't have gone to 3 man rush the last drive before half but that was obviously taken care of by Dabo during halftime. He wasn't very happy when he let the field.

I didn't see them "shut down" anything. I saw a lot of bending, but not much breaking. The Goodwin D is soft compared to the Venables D. Venables attacked Goodwin is scared to attack.

Re: One Man's Sober Take from Being at the Game

Sep 24, 2023, 3:44 PM

With the way they turn the ball over I would of taken a knee and went to OT. With past teams I would of tried to move the ball. The problem was burning the other 2 timeouts. I think the big problem with the receivers has been evaluation. Tyler Brown wasn't even being recruited and he's by far the best receiver. Adam Randall hasn't shown much. Not sure Turner is that good. Williams wasn't highly recruited and he's the second best receiver. Hopefully Brown can stay healthy because he's the only true play maker out there.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Williams wasnt highly recruited?!?

5

Sep 24, 2023, 4:03 PM

247Sports had him as the #6 receiver in the 2022 class. He had 27 scholarship offers including Clemson, Georgia, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Auburn, Michigan, Miami, and Florida State.

We needed AW0 that game. And stars don't matter unless you pay for them...we've done more with less...lets get back to building that interior fire where every one is focused on winning every play, and a staff that develops/promotes/elevates these players in return for their hard work and discipline.

Anyway, appreciate the post. Honestly not sure what the coaches worked on in fall camp.

Batson has been great, but I just dont see elite S&C out there.

Sep 24, 2023, 4:22 PM

The OL is not getting much push and hasn’t yet under Austin, but I also notice we don’t have the body types of elite teams. I don’t know if the elite programs are up to shenanigans in S&C (like the NFL PED of choose - HGH), but legs and lower bodies are like tree trunks, they have thicker upper bodies and arm size and definition iis different too.

Along with that, I don’t think we’re doing too good against teams who can and do bow up and smash us (think Ohio State and Notre Dame).

These 4 and 5 stars are all coming in roughly the same size. It’s only after spending time in the UGAs, or Texas, or Ohio States.

I’m a long proponent of a little less finesse and a little more physical even smash mouth. I just don’t see us being very physical at the LOS. It’s either Dabo’s philosophy, Thomas Austin, S&C, or some combination. I don’t know. But I don’t like watching the OL struggle to blow people off the ball and/or protect Cade.

Agree about the Oline and disagree about the WRs

2

Sep 24, 2023, 4:34 PM

The WRs have been getting better each week. Not calling for Austin’s head, but the Oline needs to open more holes in the running game, the pass blocking has been solid for the past three games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Agree about the Oline and disagree about the WRs

5

Sep 24, 2023, 5:21 PM

I'll call for Austin's head. The O-line has been stagnant for years. Trevor spent his last year running for his life. DJ could never get set.

We've not had a running back put up great averages since Spiller. And to see them continuously try to bust up the middle yesterday was just wasting down after down. No hole to be found anywhere.

Cool deal, I'll meet you halfway. This receiver group certainly looks better and more committed than the last couple of years, but there are a lot of expectations at WRU. I did REALLY like when Randall snagged that ball and fought for it all the way down to the dirt. That's what we need more of. Great play #8.

HOw was blocking on that 3rd down screen? Agree.....getting a bit better but that group is no where near what we used to have. No one strikes fear into DC hearts. Thank goodness for Wesco and Moore...both are a HUGE step back in right direction...

Re: Agree about the Oline and disagree about the WRs

2

Sep 24, 2023, 8:29 PM [ in reply to Agree about the Oline and disagree about the WRs ]

IMHO…
When we had big success, the offense threw the ball to open up the run. The Chad and Riley are from the same mold. It worked. I feel since Dabo is a run first defensive minded clock manager, we truly are conflicted in what Dabo wants and what Riley philosophy is…

HUNO offense rely solely on fast passes and then open up the run… Dabo would like to win 14-10 in a defensive struggle..

On another note… if you want to watch good OL play… watch Notre Dame and OSU… as bad as it pains me to say.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree on Kicker Situation..

3

Sep 24, 2023, 10:26 PM

I really think we should have had that "We don't need no stinkin FG Kicker" mindset you mentioned and used Brinngingtool more especially in the Red Zone.
Clemson knew a field goal try was at best a 50-50 deal.

We have some young guys, new qb and a new OC. We beat FSU and Duke in all stats but the main one, but receivers have been much better than the last 2 years. You quit giving up points off of TO’s you are 4-0. This team has gotten better since game 1. Defense played very well against a really experienced offense. If some of you think Venables or Grisham are the issues then you are not paying much attention. I have seen Venables get his defense looking over at the sidelines waiting on calls and get drug up and down the field. Great coach but defense is not our current issue. Experience on offense and turning the ball over are things this team will need to overcome going forward. Post game Dabo did admit to some coaching errors on his part but the players had multiple chances to go up 14 but did not make the plays. Maybe my expectations were not the national championship with breaking in a new QB and offensive scheme. Hope all of you have a great rest of your day and GO TIGERS!!

You were maybe a little calmer about it than I have been, but we both see the very same problems, and it's all within the lack of experience on the staff of coaches, and the players are playing how they are being coached, or lack of being coached...

Giving credit to Goodwin with the way our D will play at times, is giving credit when no credit is due bc on our D side of the ball is where the most/best talent on the team is and they're play is from talent and natural ability, it's not by anything that has been coached up by Goodwin, just look at the position he coaches with hands on coaching, we've seen better LB play with much less talented LB under BV....
