New Story: Rebuild or reload? Tigers facing same questions at defensive end as in 2015

Rebuild or reload? Tigers facing same questions at defensive end as in 2015

For those who want Clemson to fail in 2016, it’s easy to point to the loss of defensive ends Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd and say that Brent Venables’ defense will be hard-pressed to replicate the numbers put up in 2014 and 2015. Full Story »

Clelin Ferrell looked like another 1st-rounder to me, physically. Cat was bounding around out there in the Spring Game, certainly looked the part. Jacked up but lean, explodes out of his stance, has the wingspan of a 747. Austin Bryant looks the part getting off the bus himself, as does Yeargin. Everybody raves about Xavier Kelly, and he was pushing 5-stars from a lot of services.

So the physical talent is assuredly there, and we already know what Marion Hobby's recent track record is developing these guys...he's put 5 ends in the NFL in the last 2 years, and two of them were first-rounders and another one was a second rounder. That is impressive.

So, yeah, I know we're supposed to worry, and I always do, a bit, but this is a system that has just been punching out dominant rush ends lately, and I don't see that changing too much in 2016.

Add to the fact that both DTs will probably need to be double teamed

Jul 6, 2016, 2:50 PM

No matter who is actually in there, all of them will call for 2 blockers. These ends are going to put up great numbers because they aren't going to be the heavy focus of the opposing OL. Plus, they are going against 2 really talented OTs everyday in practice. Iron sharpens iron.

I don't think Kelly will be quite ready yet because he has to adjust to this level of competition. They don't play the same level of HS football in Kansas that they do in Florida, Georgia, Texas, or even the Carolinas.

Elite private schools tend to be an exception. Nevada high school football is pretty weak too, but Bishop Gorman churns out 4-star prospects.

I don' think we are exactly rebuilding or releloading.

Jul 6, 2016, 3:30 PM

I think we are going to an entirely new level talent wise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Completely agree

Jul 6, 2016, 8:29 PM

We are strong and getting stronger at all positions. We may take half a step back at QB, but honestly by then we should be less dependent on running yards from the QB.

Good article, as always enjoy the insight. For now in just want these youn men to worry about practicing hard, playing harder, and taking care of their assignments. The leadership will come. Ben Boulware saus what's up, he, Tank and C. Watkins have that end well covered with experience and fire. I will say this. If our DE'S perform even somewhat close to the level of last season, our defense might actually be better. I think our DTS are better now, only losing Reader who missed a large chunk of last year. Our LB'S I see being better. Our DBs, yeah, losing those guys hurts, but frankly their best friend all year was a monsterrible pass rush tbat saw them challenged very little anyway. As long as the Safeties make their assignments, we're in solid shape on D, and I hear our Offense might be able to at least carry some of its weight.

Once again, the key to....

Jul 6, 2016, 4:29 PM

the 2016 defense will be the secondary; There's not alot to worry about
with the front 7. If the secondary steps up, namely corner- we'll be fine.

If Shaq and Lamar pick up the playbook quickly can you

Jul 6, 2016, 4:48 PM

imagine how good our front seven will be with them complimenting Boulware? Those two already look like studs, have the ability, its just the head game for them at this point.

Also, Mac is a huge lose but with the way Kearse and Green played down the stretch, we can't be any worse on the back-end than we were last year. Could end up being better even.

Might be a blessing that we have FSU late in the year. Most of these Freshmen studs will practically be sophomores by then. I think if we avoid the injury bug this D might be one of the best D's we've seen since the 80's, no doubt.

To overlook Kendall Joseph would be a mistake. He's gonna be very good at LB for us this year. Mark it down

"For those who want Clemson to fail in 2016." Good thinking
