CLEMSON, S.C. -- Mike Eppley passed 66 yards for one touchdown and wide receiver Ray Williams ran 17 yards on a reverse for the go-ahead score Saturday to lift Clemson to a 17-10 win over Virginia Tech.

Williams' scoring run put the Tigers ahead 14-10 with 9 seconds left in the third quarter and allowed Clemson, 7-2, to regain the momentum the Hokies, 7-3, had in the first half.

Clemson's Donald Igwebuike kicked a 44-yard field goal with 2:11 left in the game to close out the scoring.

Virginia Tech had a final chance to win but backup quaterback Todd Greenwood misfired four straight times at midfield and Clemson took over and ran out the clock.

Clemson scored on the third play of the game when Eppley hooked up with sophomore wide receiver Terrance Roulhac on the 66-yard scoring pass.

The extra point conversion by Igwebuike made it 7-0, but the Tigers were able to manage just one more first down in the half.

The Hokies tied the score in the second quarter with a 96-yard drive following a Clemson punt to the 4 yard line. Running back Maurice Williams got the score on a 1-yard run.

Virginia Tech went ahead 10-7 on a 26-yard field goal by Don Wade following a Hasley Lee interception of an Eppley pass. The defensive back returned the interception 22 yards to the Clemson 9, but on third and goal from the 2 yard line, quarterback Mark Cox slipped and lost seven yards, forcing the field goal unit to come with 1:27 left in the half.

Trailing 10-7, Clemson was forced to try a 49-yard field goal by Igwebuike. But Virginia Tech was penalized for roughing the kicker and two plays later Williams scored on the reverse.

Terremce Rhoulac would have been a great WR in today's offenses

He had 92 receptions, 1,487 yards, and 16 touchdowns in Clemson's run heavy offense of the 1980s.

He was also the guy that ran out of bounds at the UGA 35 with one second left in Athens in '84 after UGA's 60 yard go-ahead FG with 11 seconds left. But the refs huddled and decided that time ran out. Too bad we didn't have video review back then.
