Swinney talks about the reason for Clemson RB transfer
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was asked about running back Michel Duke's transfer this week and offered an extra detail on it. The junior out of Charleston entered the transfer portal earlier this week. Dukes was largely buried on the depth chart, but he had traveled to Syracuse. Swinney said there was Read Update » |

The “team issue” is that our offense stinks and Dukes

saw no reason to keep toiling away in practice and in team meetings if he wasn’t going to get a chance to play.
It sounds like he sees a better situation for himself elsewhere, and Clemson does too. That’s what the portal is for.
Thanks for your hard work for our football program, Mr. Dukes. I wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Guess Dukes needs to grow up and realize he has to face his OWN consequences. Worry about getting yourself right, then you can worry about others.

What? So all of a sudden CJ gets here and all of the RBs have issues. Maybe CJ was a great running back but maybe, just maybe he's not a great coach and maybe he's a sucky human. Ya'll better stop this because these recruits are reading these post and that's why we haven't been getting the guys lately that we would usually get. Dabo is giving ya'll what you wanted and now it's not working.....

I'm not buying it and as long as I've known this kid and this family that has never been an issue. Or maybe CJ doesn't know what it take to be a winner. Maybe, just maybe his ego is a monster that needs to be tamed.

I'll be honest. I've always loved Spiller as a player and Ambassador for our school. That being said, Shipley isn't ready to be a starting Rb and Pace is mostly effective in short yardage situations. Lynn J was without a doubt our most complete rb & could have won the Georgia game for us if used properly. Spiller would be a great recruiting coordinator but he's causing major problems in our rb room. Its not a coincidence our guys getting in trouble under C.J have never had prior behavior problems. New coaches disrespecting players that have been contributing for yrs by being stubborn over seniority is a problem. I think CJ is playing that role and talking down to the players but thats just a guess. Streeter,Spiller,Grisham need to be recruiting. We need to part ways with Elliott & Caldwell. We need a veteran qb coach and better playcalling. Dabo is a great CEO and definitely the guy I want as Head coach but its his job to hire the best coaches and right now we could have better assistants in several areas. I will say Dabo has no idea how to use timeouts effectively, its by far his worst trait. Fortunately its an easy thing to fix. No excuse in not letting TP7 get a few series a game, especially if he's productive. Competition breeds success. TP7 has patiently waited for a shot, same as LJD did. We need instant improvement during games and continuingto do the same thing expecting different results is naive. We only need a little success on offense to completely turn this around. If we lose to Pitt by not trying anything new its totally on Dabo.

That' a lot of speculation.
You don't know what the interaction are between Spiller and the backs. There is zero evidence that Spiller is causing. You don't know if he's causing any problems let alone major problems in our RB room. You know nothing about disrespect from any coaches. If he's coaching the backs hard, then so be it. That's how you win games in big boy football. Seems to me that's the best playing group on the offense right now,, wouldn't you agree? Lyn J didn't like being coached hard and having to pay for his behavior. So what. He DID need to grow up and handle it through his game. It happens, especially when there's a new coach. That's good coaching though... ALL players need to earn it. The guys who did, got the playing time. Seniority does NOT guarantee you the starting nod. Don't we want the best, hardest working players playing, regardless of seniority? You said below, "competition breeds success". You said it right there - the best should play.
You don't know how Lyn J would have played against UGA, but when the UGA defense is holding us to 2 yards a carry there's nothing to suggest Lyn J would have been any better, let alone enough to win the game.
We have a proven QB coach, and proven playcalling. One can say the QB coach hasn't yet been able to settle down DJ, but there are incremental improvements. DJ had his best game of the season against BC, then graded out even better against Syracuse. You mentioned we're getting the same results, but that's technically not true. It's also critical to note there were 9 drops between those two games. Could have been much different ballgames.
As long as DJ is progressing there's no need to play the replacement game. Elliott said Taisun will play a more active role though, but it won't be with DJ continuing to get better.
What "new" would you like to try? As with every game we bring some new wrinkles, but what exactly would you think will make us execute better? Elliott has it right - he said we can't open the playbook until we learn the basics. The completion % is coming up, but we need to make more catches better blocking, including WRs. That's not based on playcalls. There is no offense that work when you're not executing at several levels.
Fortunately, we are improving in certain areas.

Lot of strange points. Started with he transferred because “we stink”, but then jumped over to how it was probably mutually beneficial. Then you finish with a nice formulaic comment about how much you care.

during a season where we can’t score points, then I don’t know what to tell you.
Being frustrated working your tail off and not playing during a difficult season is a very common (and legitimate) reason for transferring.
People who want to attack Dukes and make it sound like he is being punished for disobeying the coaches are the ones who are likely to be spewing misinformation.
I’d rather give the player and our coaches the benefit of the doubt, rather than assume that he is a problem child who was disciplined by our coaches. But maybe that’s just me.

A "team issue" tells you nothing. It's just your wild guess based on nothing. Just like most of your football posts, you have no clue. Just shotgunning as usual. No offense of course.
Please stick with basketball and the rinse and repeat excuses, because obviously that coach is beyond reproach. Seems awfully hypocritical.

The thing that is bothering me is Dabo's increasingly bad habit of calling players out publicly. Why did there need to be any comment on team rules and Dukes? If he is gone he is gone and that should be the end of it.
I didn't like him saying that Lyn-J needed "to grow up", but I reasoned that he thought Lyn-J would respond to the public criticism. These young men do not have the opportunity to respond without making themselves, Dabo, and the program look bad. Unless he is going to explain the problem so that there is no wild speculation, he should just keep things in house.

I absolutely agree with what you're saying and I know why Dabo is putting out the narrative that it's some sort of character issue. I've been a Clemson fan for 40 years so I'm a diehard but I'm not sure if I'm with Dabo anymore man. Dabo is in love with the idea of being seen as a nobel stand up kind of guy but he's not a Nobel stand up kind of guy. Dabo has a lot of trauma from his upbringing and it just informs how he leads. Having everyone like you will work for a while but then you have to have some concrete leadership skills that go beyond just having a good time. Say what you want too about Nick Saban but he's as consistent as they come. He may seem stoic and straight laced to some but that's why he's the GOAT of college coaches.

I've laughed through all of your idiotic posts, but I feel like saying something now. You claim to be a Clemson football fan and you want to be rid of Dabo who is the only reason Clemson has been in as many playoffs as anyone and won 2 national titles over the past few years. You are tired of his antics because of a down season and two losses? That's just delusional. I find you being a Clemson fan very hard to believe. You've got to be a troll and I completely understand why anyone would think you were a coot.

"increasingly bad habit of calling players out publicly"
Oct 21, 2021, 10:54 PM
[ in reply to Re: The “team issue” is that our offense stinks and Dukes ] |
|
Lyn-J was the only one, and sometimes it's okay to call out a kid when he thinks he's bigger than the team. Dabo has mentioned players several times throughout his career, but it has never been a throwing under the bus type deal. More of a motivational tool, but we much more tend to keep things in-house.
Saying Dukes was a "team issue" isn't "calling him out" either. It's not possible to make the jump from team issue to breaking team rules. Plus, he went on to say he would do anything for him.
I'm curious though.. "increasingly bad habit" .. Who else are you referring to? Perhaps you exaggerated a little bit?

Dukes was out for multiple weeks during fall camp for an undisclosed reason that was stated to not be related to injury.
Now Dukes had some sort of "team issue" that was enough to lead to some sort of consequence that he was unhappy with.
I'm not saying yall are wrong about him being a great kid because he has shown up to this season nothing to suggest otherwise about his character.
What I am saying is that there is mounting evidence to show that he has not been living up to his previously set high standard.
Also funny that Dabo, who kept whatever issue quiet during camp, is being slammed on here because he generically said that Dukes did not like the consequences from his "team issue" and decided it was time to leave.
A lot on here constantly whine and cry about these poor kids treated so unfairly by these bully coaches that Clemson employs, yet there are far more examples of "poor kids" being punished and taking it like men and moving forward and being better for it.
I can understand Dukes leaving for playing time after the season, but to pretend that he is doing the only logical thing by transferring out immediately because big bad Dabo chose to discipline an incorrect behavior is simply nonsense.

You are absolutely wrong with this one. Could it possibly be that Dabo is wrong and shouldn't have made a public comment and if he did maybe it should have been that, "It's an internal issue and we wish him well and we know that he'll do great wherever he ends up. Mikey has not publicly made a a comment on this. The guys never due until they leave after Dabo has in his own way made people question their character. We can agree to disagree.

You live down the street and you know the kid intimately. Right, gotcha. If you are not the most delusional person on the planet, I'm not sure who it would be. I know lots of people that had kids go astray. Get out more, dude. I don't know the kid, but Dabo is awesome and has proven himself over and over. Get a life and some brain surgery.

If you’re not going to tell the story Dabo why even start it. You said just enough for all the idiots to start slamming on Dukes. Sometimes it’s just best to keep your mouth shut .

Thats exactly what I've been trying to say. Dabo knows how this fanbase is and how they think.

Kids want to play and if they don't think they are good enough to play, a team would not want them. The problem with the portal is kids think they deserve to play and can become a cancer on the team if they don't. The portal makes it easy for those kind of players to leave and they should leave.

Ahh, so now we are seeing what I feared most with the d**n transfer portal. A coach's best tool for maintaining discipline and control of a team has always been playing time. The T/P has taking a huge bite out of that. Now coaches have to walk that fine line between discipline and loosing player who are unhappy about following the rules.

My son & I were just talking about this very same thing a couple weeks back. For years and years we were amazed at the skill Dabo showed with the media at every opportunity. Seems like he ALWAYS says the right thing and the media mostly loved good old Dabo. For the past year it seems Dabo no longer cares what he says and on many an occasion has inserted his foot in his mouth, many times causing the opposition to get bulletin board material by the reams. Seems he is growing weary of the entire process.

Whatever. Clemson is relevant only because of Dabo. People on this site have been blasting Dabo since the Georgia game and I am just shaking my #### head. Get real, you guys sound like a bunch of fat spoiled babies. The Tigers aren't even favored this week against Pitt and I don't think I will come back here if we lose. You people are just ridiculous.

I couldn't agree more. I liken the malcontents on this board (or other similar venues) to the drunken fools in the stadium who stand and yell at the coaches or refs / umpires / etc., or players none of whom will ever hear the screams. These fools only yell so that those around them will be impressed by their considerable knowledge.
