But, even in the years where we whipped them, the concensus among the writers seemd to be that we were underdogs..almost every year. So this is just par for the course.

we will know much more after USuC plays UGA. I wouldn't place much stock in any reports until after that game. Both teams will know where they are and what they have to do to have the season that they want to have.

Impossible for anyone to predict what will happen in November. Many thing can, and probably will, happen that will determine the winner of that game and others. Pure hogwash.

Unfortunately, look at 2011 for example. You guys beat Auburn, then we end up losing to them a couple of weeks later (that game still pains me).
However, looking back on it, that's probably not the best example, considering I doubt we'll have the QB turnaround like we did that year.

We really should have taken care of them last year in our own stadium. It won't exactly be any easier in their backyard unless their team is not as good as the past few years. I'm sure they will be motivated to keep the streak alive as long as possible. Too bad we can't play this game at a neutral site like the UGA-UF game, at least it would keep home field advantage out of the picture - maybe we should play it in Charlotte.

Sure, our 12 turned out to be pretty good, but still, we needed about 12 more good ones that year. The low numbers set us back and we are still struggling to recover.
It's no coincidence that SCAR has gained the upper hand since then. Every year since 2009, SCAR has signed as many or more players than we have.
According to Rivals between 2009 and 2013, SCAR brought in 130 players while Clemson brought in only 108.
When you sign more, you cover your recruiting mistakes and you increase the chances that some good ones will be in the mix.

No matter how many players you sign in any year makes no difference because you can only have 85 players on your roster in any given year. In 2008,09,10,11,&12, both teams had 85 players on their roster.

Exactly ... how you get down to 85 makes a big difference.

And taking 21 more players over a 5 year period greatly increased the chances that SCAR would end up with 85 good ones.
The problem is, what do you do with all those extra players who aren't ones you want to be part of your final 85 ??

How is it unequal when all teams can do the same things. The players who do not make it are put on the practice squad. In lots of cases players on the practice squads are given Scholarships when they earn them. They are classified as walk-ons.

If a school does not fill all of it's scholarships in a year they can sign more than the teams that did the following year. It all evens out.

All schools "can" do it? But oddly most schools don''t.

You're working hard to rationalize a rather questionable practice that is mostly confined to schools within a certain conference.
According to Rivals, SCAR signed 130 players between 2009 and 2013.
Did the extra 45 guys all end up on the practice squad?

Keys to victory of the dirt peckers

A)Get some help blocking No7. Use a tightend to help or perhaps get Darrell Smith to chip him. I'm shocked at how most teams just leave him one on one against an inferior lineman.
B)Our defense will be better, undoubtedly. We're going to need some big plays, big hits, and turnovers. We need some turnovers! A big, legal, hit would establish our tone. A much needed tone I might add. And Heaven forbid we blitz this year and put a spy on Shaw.
C)Establish a running game. It worked for us last year and for some reason we switched to a short passing game; which led to our downfall. Get our big boys up front to pave the way for HotRod, Gallman, or Dye.
D)Special teams play. We can count on Catman for sure. He's money. Should we need to punt, it wouldn't hurt if Pinion can pin them deep. Block a punt!!! Go after one! I bet we get the opening kickoff and a huge return would also help with tempo. Then throw one deep to Bryant. Score quick. Make em try to catch up. GO TIGERS! WE GOT IT THIS YEAR!!

All speculation at this point. Shaw, Clowney, Boyd, McDowell and others may not even be playing in November. Dye, Gallman have never played a down of college football and you list them as factors in this game. Let's wait until the week before to make a game plan. I bet that is what coach S will do.

I don't know how any RATIONAL tiger fan could be optimistic about this game right now.
We've lost 4 in a row, please do not make excuses for that, that only makes us sound like they used to sound.
I fully believed we would win each of the last two years, and we choked in both games IMO. I don't currently have any belief that will rectify itself this year playing at the cockroach and it being Clowney's last year.
Call me a bad fan if you will, I call it being a realist.
Let's wait and see after the SCU/UGA game, and that'll give a good indicator of how both CU and SCU stack up.

Thank you raginranger. It's so sad to me that so many Tiger fans sound like the gamecocks of 10-20 years ago, with all of these ridiculous, off-the-wall excuses. They outplayed us (and outcoached us) in the clutch situations last year in Death Valley, so why should we expect it to be so radically different in 2013? Careful though, realism and objectivity are not appreciated much on this board. I also agree that both teams have an early litmus test with UGA!

the match-up with LSU last year. But the team did something totally irrational ... they won.
Something about the overall team changed in that game.
That was not the same team that played SCAR several weeks earlier.
As a rational Tiger fan myself, I know that we've had a lot of weaknesses over the past few years that needed addressing through coaching upgrades and better recruiting.
I think we've made great strides in both areas and it will show this year, culminating in a big win over SCAR down in Columbia.

Fair enough and just for the record, I was not optimistic about the LSU game at all.
I thought we'd get smoked like the thanksgiving turkey.
I was however elated at the outcome of that game.
I just think you can pull 100% for your team without drinking the orange kool-aid and living in La la land with predictions.
That said, I predict we will go 11-1 this year. Losing to either UGA or SCU.

the ones that they have are big. Will Scar's D step up in the middle and can the safety losses be quickly absorbed? Can the offense make up for the return game of Ace?
Will Clemson's DBs take a step forward? Will the RB game remain the same? Can Sammy be healthy all year?

The difference in last 4 yrs
Jul 11, 2013, 2:32 PM
|
|
in my opinion has been our defensive struggles. It has been a while since weve fielded a stout defense and Spurrts will always outflank and outscore a weaker defensive team. Thought our guys showed some major improvement in BV's first yr and expect our defense will be pretty good this season. We have a solid front seven and qbs will get more pressure for sure...our dbs are the unknown , but Venables looks like a greatplayers coach and strategist. We should be able to win some with our stoppers this season...wouldnt that be a switch ?

I feel good about Clemson because of a guy named Sweeney and a few other assistants. The LSU game showed me something I hadn't seen in a while. A lot of questions will be answered on Aug. 31 st. GO TIGERS.

the Gamecocks are going to need some sort of miracle at LB this season due to losing so much from graduation. The whole two deep to to be exact. Secondary and Dline will be fine. Clemson has some "touted" guys, but the secondary was bad last season and lost a lot of guys out of it. LB core returns a lot of experience, but the DLine apart from VB will be iffy compared to recent past. Both offenses should be fine. Returning QBs and WRs who are good players. Experienced olines as well. But running games on both parts will be neat to watch develope. Considering both are relatively fresh out the gate.
