and still don't NEED a new pair, since MJs are so durable and timeless. Think my last 5 pairs, going back to the 2000s, have been MJs (actually, I never wear those first 3 pairs, so not QUITE timeless, but hey). That said, the Woot-off yestiday had a buncha Costas on sale. Never owned a pair, so figured I'd give them a whirl based almost purely on what appears to be a good deal. $92 for a pair that is listed at $239 on the Costa website.
Is my MJ level-smug about to increase because Costas are overrated fratboy trash, or drop sharply because they're actually decent?

Costa lenses (580G) are better than what MJ puts out
but, MJ (the classic ones) seem to look and wear better.
I snagged a pair of the costa imitation MJs, and I like them alot. I just don't like those style of glasses as an every day pair - seem too fragile.
for the record, when someone says Maui Jims, I think of these...

These were part of their collab with Osearch. FINALLY, they adopted the MJ spring loaded arms. They don't work as well as the MJ's though.

better made sunglasses and better lenses than my Costas. However, the current Costas I have are the cheaper lenses because I lost my favorite ones in the ocean playing drunk football with my kids. I think mine retailed for a little over $100, not the higher end.
As for the Mauis, my wife loves hers but I think mine are too heavy and bother my ears a little. I think I have them in a glasses case somewhere, but I rarely wear them.

Stick with the MJ's. My niece swears by Costa and gave me a pair for Christmas. Not bad at alll but I rarely wear them. I always reach for the MJ's.

word of warning on the new Costas
Aug 12, 2021, 8:11 PM

I have a couple old pair that are dang near bulletproof, have lasted many years. Top shelf quality. But last year I got a pair made with this new "bio-resin" or recycled shrimpnet or whatever they are currently "saving the planet" with. They were gaudy-big, but that's what I wanted, to mow and weed-eat the property with, full eye coverage.
Had them about a month. I was getting something out of my Jeep one day and merely bumped them on the side of the open door (while wearing them). Snapped right off at the hinge. I'm talking LOW impact. At the time, Costa wasn't even accepting repairs due to the Covid, so I couldn't even send them in to get fixed (I see that they have since reopened). But screw it, I don't want something that stupidly fragile. So my bad, a mistake I won't repeat.
Beware what the frame material is made of, the recycled stuff. Get metal frames if you go Costa. I like Maui's better anyways. And Serengeti's. Both of those have Rose/Sedona lenses which are the best lens by far.

To each their own, but I never spend much money on sunglasses. I used to, but they always end up in the ocean/sea, bottom of a lake, or off the side of a mountain.

I tend to take care of them more.
Plus glare kills me and I get headaches so I go for the better shades.

I hear you buddy. I like decent quality, but I'm just rough on sunglasses. I'll spend $30 - $50, but I kill sunglasses - some way, some how. I get it, I would buy really good ones too, but my shades always take a beating.

I thought that too when I was young

but after a buddy of mine got cataracts before he was 30 from UV sun damage being out on the water and on the golf course. Doctor told him he was at risk of all kinds of other eye problems to come.
I quickly decided my eyesight was probably my most precious possession. Been wearing quality shades ever since. IMO, one of the best investments you can make in yourself.
In my 50's now and still don't even need reading glasses.

I may not really understand sunglasses all that well, but the ones I have seem to protect pretty well. Not super el cheapos, but not $200 either.

You were at the ND game... now you're just bragging . "We given em nice uniforms, we give em a nice place to live, we give em stipens, but I can't give you heart, and I can't give you guts. You got to bring your own heart and you got to bring your own guts" ... or something like that. That was some Knuke Rockne sh it there.
