What's your biggest worry against Bama?
Jan 2, 2019, 2:16 PM
|
|
In terms of matchup/players/coaching etc.
For me it's their playmaking WRs Waddle and Jeudy. I feel like if they get space they could really get some serious yards after catch and make it a long night for the defense. We can't allow Tua to get in a comfortable rhythm of delivering quick passes to those two in space.
What's yours?

Uncalled targetting and late hits.
OL protection. Not being critical with that statementeither. I just think we will win if we give TL a little time.

A lot of people are going to say the secondary for obvious reasons, and I agree with that.
I'll add a concern of getting our running game going. We've struggled to do that with our running backs each of the 3 times we've faced Bama in the CFP.
2015 NC Game: Gallman 14 carries for 45 yards, and he had a 34 yard carry in the game. 2016 NC Game: Gallman 18 carries for 46 yards, and for that matter Watson had 21 for 43. 2017 Sugar Bowl: ETN/Choice/Feaster 13 carries for 46 yards. Bryant had 19 carries for 19 yards.
I know last year was a bit misleading due to Bama getting a big lead in the 3rd and ETN getting hurt, but I hope we're able to do more this year. Lawrence is great, and I think he can have a big night, but I'm not sure we can win while averaging just over 2 yards per carry the way we did in 2016.

Agree with what’s been said and add that I hope we may have learned something from the Texas game last night. We’ve had trouble trying to get those buble screens working and bama is not going to consistently lose the edge so I say run right at them.
I really liked Texas backs and qb let the blocks develop and find the holes and then push the pile forward.

I think that the Kirby had a great game plan Force Clemson to throw to win. And we had to. This year is if they crowd the box we need to be smart and quick game them with slants until they back off. They are going to 100% try to stop Travis. The offense starts with him. If we can get him started I think we can win games vertically. We have got to find a receiving TE. This helped us with Alabama when we won. Leggett was a problem down field blocking and catching with their linebackers. Their secondary is young. We can exploit them if we have time.

Losing the turnover battle. I think we're capable of overcoming most everything else, but not that. Bama is far from perfect, but I don't expect them to turn the ball over or make big mistakes. We've got to make Bama earn everything. We can't help them.

Being able to get a run game going and if not them harassing TL. ETN might Be to little to be effective vs Bama especially if our O-line is getting pushed back. So basically our O-line vs their D-line. I really think Choice is going to be our man in this game.

I would agree with yours. Clemson has struggled with fast receivers this year. We need to hit Tua early and often to rattle him.

1. Not getting pressure on Tua 2. Defensive breakdown(s) allowing easy TD, especially secondary breakdown 3. Our OL not creating holes 4. Us not handling the blitz, especially our RBs

Goon patrol being able to headhunt recklessly and officials not enforcing the rules regarding targeting. Specifically; in the name of Bama imposing their will.
Do I get a second try if we are talking fairly officiated and I am fine with intimidation within the rules?

I think most of us will say Tua vs our secondary. Many plays our DL will get pressure, and many times our secondary will make a play... but there will be perfect throws from Tua on the occasions when he gets time... can we keep those numbers down to manageable.

Special Teams -- Pick One

This could be the year Clemson wins a second championship.
Or, the Bama game could be the game that forces Dabo's hand to finally hiring a special teams coach. Prefer option 1.

I've watched their game against OU and know we're going to beat them. My first clue was that OU wasted a spy on Tua until they were down four touchdowns. Half the secondary was worried more about Tua taking off than covering their man. Very early in the third quarter they realized Tua is not only a step or two slower than he was previous to the ankle surgery his ability to cut and dodge was greatly reduced.
Bama when up 28 during OU's delusion. After that OU outscored Bama 34 to 17. Late in the game Hurts came in and tried to crash OU's line on a 1st and goal. OU stopped him and Nick put Tua back in. This chit isn't accidental or incidental either. I admit, part of that 34-17 run was partly due Bama's players getting the big head but they were torched by good play calling and a little above fair execution.
I know nothing about football strategy or Xes and Oes so you can bet our coaches will come ready to release the Kraken. We'll win by 17 but it will feel like 30.

My biggest concern is that the refs not have the traditional Bama bias that most squads do. Also, since they are a Big 10 crew, the article I linked the other day about Big 10 refs never calling holding, but one fan in the comments said he wish'd they were also that way on PI but they got nuts calling it. So if they are Bama biased, a PI happy squad is going to really ruin the game for us given we both have pass-heavy offenses.
Here's article for anybody that cares and didn't see it before and no idea if the fan is right about the PI calls btw, but his is one of the last comments:
