Schoolhouse Rock: Fond Memories as a Kid

As a kid, I always loved Saturday morning cartoons. Sadly, that tradition of childhood has been lost in recent years of streaming anything you want whenever you want.
Recently, I was reminded of something that I loved as an important part of my Saturday morning cartoon ritual. Schoolhouse Rock felt like it was a part of my generation, much like riding my bike; roaming free around the neighborhood all day long; drinking directly out of a garden hose; and keeping score in Little League games. It was a wonderful time to be a kid!!
For those who might not be familiar with Schoolhouse Rock, it was a series of educational videos that provided a fun learning tool for kids. The videos focused on math, grammar/English, history, or government (civics). They came on during Saturday morning kids’ shows. And they were always fun!
Thinking back on Schoolhouse Rock still brings a smile to my face. Wondering if it does for anyone else as well!

That's really the only English class I learned from with what little bit I remember.
I will say school did fail me some because during my working career I did not have to diagram the first sentence.
Glad I made it to retirement and I can blame most things on old age now.

I don't listen to NPR, but PBS has some good shows that have absolutely nothing to do with news or propaganda.

I guess I'm a lot older than the Saturday morning cartoon watchers.... and I don't know if we were the last family on my block to get a TV, but when we did get one it was a used one. Then a year later we ditched the rabbit ears, installed the motorized Channel Master antenna on the chimney and hooked it up to the inside controller.
That used TV took a while to warm up and then the vertical roll had to be adjusted so the picture was stable. It made watching TV something of a mechanical art form..... but it did a good job of showing Gunsmoke, Lawrence Welk and a few golf tournaments. I didn't have much interest in any of that, so I didn't watch much TV.
Before we got the TV, I did notice that many of the neighborhood kids were spending Saturday mornings watching Annette Funicello but I can say I was too busy playing football, baseball, basketball or shooting my Daisy Red Ryder BB gun in the back yard to ever watch a single episode.
When I wasn't playing ball, I would ride my bike to the river and either fish or swim. I also learned to play tennis at that time - no lessons, just read about how to play tennis in the World Book encyclopedia and started playing with my father's old bamboo racquet. I taught myself to play golf the same way. I also commandeered dad's bamboo fly rod and his target bow....  ">">">">">
When I was old enough to drive (14), I spent many free days in the woods with a rifle or shotgun - or would go camping near a pond for a weekend.
So, I guess I didn't get an education from TV, but I certainly got one of a different sort from the outdoors that provided a great deal of satisfaction for many, many years and I feel sorry for today's kids who are so tied to devices that they never learn many useful things about life and the lessons that can be learned from personal experiences with the outdoors.

I grew up a lot like you did on five acres mostly planted in fruits and veggies. Got to help plant, maintain irrigation (drip and spray), pull weeds, hoe and till rows, tie tomatoes, pick itchy okra, shuck and cut corn for canning, pick and snap green beans, help dad in his shop bc he was a carpenter/cabinet maker, and mow lawns and rake leaves for money.
We couldn't wait to go out and ride bikes, play ball, climb trees, hike, camp, fish, swim, and see how close we could stand to each other while getting shot with a BB gun (don't recommend doing that). The first TV I remember was a 13 inch black and white. When we got a 19 inch color TV, we were like woohoo.
A lot of young people today don't know what they're missing by not getting out and experiencing nature and the great outdoors. Technology is great, but it seems to have replaced so much.

I believe Disney+ app has all of the school house rocks. Of course needs a subscription, but I never realize just how many episodes there really are. Good stuff!

I never saw it, probably too old. We watched Bugs Bunny, Roadrunner, Huckleberry Hound. For non-cartoons, we watched Tarzan and Shock Theatre.
