Counterproductive Automobile Option? Last year, we bought

a new GMC Acadia Denali. That thing has more bells and whistles than a full Santa sleigh. Butt, as someone who grew up wrenching on cars, one of the options really bugs me. It is equipped with the option that TURNS OFF the engine when you come to a complete stop. Then, when you hit the gas pedal to take off again, it has to crank the engine back up again. Now, it has a pushbutton that will bypass this option, but you have to hit that button when you first crank the vehicle up each trip. It does not stay "locked out", you have to reset it every time you do an initial start.
I am sure this option came about because some Jeanyus somewhere figured it would save about a spoonful of gas, or auto emissions a year. Butt, what about the HUGE extra wear and tear on the engine starting system? If you are driving in a big city, and miss the stoplights, I can literally see the vehicle having to restart itself 10, 20, even 30 times a trip. That will QUICKLY wear out a starter, as well as wearing out driver patience with that miniscule "pause" every time before the car takes off again.
Sometimes, technology advances are in fact retarded. Anybody got any others like this?

You can turn that option off, consult the manual. Might require a dealer trip but I never disabled them (granted fleets often are focused on fuel cost too).
It ain't going to wear the electrical/starter. It ain't the 70s. Outside of law-enforcement vehicles, I never say a alternator/starter issue in my fleet. Even on start/stop, those hand handle that just as well as your piston handles going up/down. Sure, there is technically where via use, but not really going to wear it out.
Also, a start-stop starter is technically different from your normal one. It is a gear reduction mechanism and I also think it spins the crankshaft as well. So really a vastly different approach overall.

My bigger issue with modern vehicles is this:
Removing the transmission dipstick.
Had a GM/Buick transmission replaced. They underfilled the new transmission (also it has to be filled/checked at a certain temp 90C). The tranny would then overheat. I could FIX the issue in the parking lot if I had a mechanism to check the level at op temp. Nope. Had to be on a lift and checked from under/behind the tranny. Fine for a place with a fleet but dang, that is bonkers for a consumer.

My Jeep truck has the turn off mechanism but it has a button you can engage to bypass it. Don't know if your vehicle has that or not. If not, go to a shade tree mechanic and he can disengage it. Dealers are not allowed to.

Wink and a nod for my dealer... the normal workaround is the hood sensor (disables start-stop). Never any service ticket there.
Right now, with a 2009 2500HD.... I would not mind the start-stop, uggg.

every time you start the car.
I bout a 2019 silverado and i asked the people there the same questions.
They said it was some sort of emission reasons and every car after 2018 is required to have this "turn off" at stop option.
There is no legitimate way to turn it off permanently.

I have two of them. One is 10 years old and the other 6. Best cars I have ever owned. Not a moment’s trouble with either one.

that was "constantly in the shop", no way on earth I would have held onto it for seven years.
Case in point, I bought a new Ford Focus in 2014, and it had automatic transmission issues before it even had 10,000 miles on it. (I later found out that ALL the Ford Focus models had this problem, pretty much, and Ford never solved it from the factory, but kept "fixing" it under warranty.)
I cut that El Lemone' in the making loose after only two years. That was my 2nd bad experience owning a new Ford, I will never own another one. It's either Chevy, GMC or Honda for me from now on.

My 2017 F-150 has the same “feature”. And you also have to push the button to turn it off every time you crank the truck. I live in a rural area and it shuts off at every stop sign if you don’t remember to push the button. I believe this comes from an Obama era mandate that is supposed to reduce emissions. What a joke. I have owned the truck for 5 years and pushing the button has become a part of the start up routine just like turning the key and putting on the seat belt.

Did any of you test drive the new auto? Soon as I learned about that, it would end the search for that make auto! Sounds like the same engineer that designed the toilet that flushes with less water.

We did test drive it. For that kind of money, you better

BELIEVE I really tested it, too. 312 rated horsepower with a TEN speed automatic produced so much "torque steer" it was scary. It would definitely take awhile to get used to if you "put the foot in it" all the time.
Makes it real easy to get up to "merge" speed on an interstate on-ramp, though!
It is my wife's primary vehicle, and SHE loves it, so that's all that REALLY matters.
I still slum along in my 2007 Avalanche LTZ. They must be in demand still, because every couple of weeks, seems like I get a letter from a different dealer wanting me to trade it in on something else!

They are trying to reduce emissions as much as possible to keep the far left happy. Left can’t understand it does the world’s climate no good for us to go nuts over saving the climate when the whole rest of the world doesn’t give a rat’s you know what about climate change. China is the world’s biggest polluter. Think they are going all electric? What about Russia or all of South America? I cannot wait to see Biden’s all electric Army, Navy and Air Force.

I cry about it every time I drive it; that and the safety "feature" that automatically slows your cruising speed down based on the vehicle in front of you. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of cruise control (if today's lousy, selfish drivers haven't made it useless already)? Anybody know if a Toyota Rav4 has this disabling button?
For me, it's just another dude challenge: See if you can trust it to bring you to a complete stop.
Kind of like the "resume/accelerate" button on cruise control. Am I the only one who has tested its limit, to see how fast it will take you - the max speed of the vehicle or some arbitrary limit? I actually got a speeding ticket doing this one, and as a result, the test was inconclusive. I also got one the first time I had a digital speedometer and had to know if it had three digits. Something had me thinking it had a "limit" of 88 (it didn't).

Last year I bought 2 Lexus Hybrids, 1 SUV and 1 Sedan. When idling the electric kicks in and no need to restart. My wife's everyday car is a Camry that gets 32 MPG and all have great acceleration. I have no complaints with any of them.
