Does Dabo actually attempt to fix special teams after this debacle
Nov 28, 2022, 8:36 AM
|

He’s been ignoring it heavily his entire time here. Punt and kick returns have been beyond pathetic, rarely if ever gaining field position. Punting has always been anemic. SC took total advantage of us and that was embarrassing.
Special teams are a third of the the game and Dabo has completely ignored them. It cost us this game without a question. We aren’t gonna get by on just having the best players any more obviously.

He will likely not change a thing in the off-season.

When the opposing team punter channels the Ray Guy spirit, you can't defend that.
As I referenced in another post, pinning a team down within the 5 once a game is pretty darn good -- SCs punter did it like 3 or 4 times and one of those punts defied physics as a line drive that stopped on a dime.

Antonio Williams (or whoever is selected for the job)

Has to be able to faircatch those before they bounce and we aren’t inside the 10.
That’s a huge part of the problem.

catching them is really tough as you're on a sprint to get to the spot. It's a risky play. Their punter did a great job.

You don’t catch anything inside the 10. You let them bounce in the end zone. The punter was hitting them with back spin because they were hitting and not bouncing forward they were dying or coming back.

Honestly after the past two years I have zero confidence anything will really change. I don’t expect to see Cade this year or next year. Special teams had always been kind of a mess and have never understood it. Maybe they figure it out or maybe they don’t. Only thing I do know is I’ll still be a Clemson man, and DJ will be our quarterback until he’s 30.

Williams has had several good punt returns
Nov 28, 2022, 8:42 AM

including one Saturday. The one he fumbled on was a good return, until he fumbled. KO returns rarely happen, but Ship's average when they do is good.
Two fumbles on kick returns killed us Saturday, that's not coaching.
Swanson has been up and down but our punters have always improved over time.
Reed is the special teams coach, and until Saturday we were ranked in the top 10 nationally.

If the coaches aren’t responsible for his fumble they aren’t responsible for the wins either.
Not personal toward you striper but I hate when people use the players not executing excuse. The coaches are directly responsible for getting the players to execute. Shane Beamer didn’t punt those balls but he sure as hell coached him up on it.

To ensure his players don’t fumble a punt return with 3 minutes left down 1.
But I will agree to disagree

I agree with you on punts and punt returns. However, with the current rules for kickoffs, I think you're better off just fair catching and taking the ball at the 25 rather than trying to setup a return. The majority of the time you're going to field the ball inside the 5, why risk a turnover when the odds of a big return are small.
I thought our punter started out the season pretty good, but he got worse as the season progressed. Then moving Williams to punt returner was a great move. The fumble Saturday hurt, but at that point the game was over anyway. I look at it as a kid trying to do too much to help his team comeback.

Without that fumble we probably would win the game on a FG.
Fumbles avoidance is coachable - it's pretty easy to see that Williams was loose with the ball on all of his returns and needs to focus on ball security. Mafah's fumble is inexplicable - he's normally very sure with the ball in his hands.

We would have had the ball at midfield with 2 minutes and a timeout left needing just 15-20 yards for a FG.
Williams made a freshman mistake, but he's a natural punt returner. He's already one of our best players and will continue to grow

Yes, Williams is a phenomenal athlete, but give it time and our coaches will “develop” him into mediocrity.

I’ve said the reason the opposing team’s punter always has a career day against us is we never make them uncomfortable with pressure. We started the year actually pressuring Ga Tech so I thought Mike Reed had addressed it. Much like everything else that was apparently coached out of the team the rest of the season. Where that direction came from I can only guess.

Punting has been lousy for years...

and, frankly, that is the root of many of the special teams problems.
BT Potter is, by far, the best punter on the team and it really isn't even close, but Dabo doesn't want him punting for fear of injury.

Isn’t it next season that they’re removing the restrictions on number of coaches allowed?
If so, I hope Dabo adds someone to just handle special teams…we ignore this aspect of the game too much and it shows.
When is the last time we actually tried to block a kick? Or set up a return?
