won the state championship in baseball, 2A I believe. where do you all stand on these private and charter schools competing against 1a and 2a schools? Me personally, I don't think they should be. there are enough of these schools in the state to form their own conference.

They should not be allowed to play for state championships against regular schools. They can recruit whoever they want where as the public schools get whoever is zoned. It’s a big disadvantage

I am very familiar with this as my kid plays against the Oceanside, Gray Collegiate, Christ Church , St Joes of the world. Simply put its not right for the kids. At such a competitive disadvantage against those type teams 95% of the time and its not close.
Example....Christ Church Boys soccer won their semi final game in the State Championship 7-0. A Semi Final amd they win 7-0.
There is a private school league in SC called SCISA. Pretty simple to me.....privates play in that league and public schools in SCHSL.

I am a fan of relegation/promotion across HS classifications. Take soccer....Christ Church and St Joes are in a league of their own. They kill Class A soccer. Why not take the top 2 (or 4) teams over a period of time (1 year or 2 years) amd move them up to AA class. Then take the 2 or 4 worst AA teams and move them down to A. AA up to AAA then move AAA down to AA, etc across all classifications.
Over time it balances out the competitive landscape. Sure its not perfect but to group schools on enrollment size alone makes no sense to me.

As a graduate of St. Joes, I find it so funny that you’d group them in with the rest of those schools. Yes, they’re private, but their success is purely coincidental. I find it laughable that you consider them in the same league, from a recruiting standpoint, as Gray Collegiate or Christ Church

Yes.....did not mean to lump St Joes with the Grays, Oceanside, and CC. My point w St Joes is they are obviously private and should play in the private school league.
Do they recruit like the others? From my understanding no but they can enroll kids from anywhere as long as mom or dads check clears. Greenville, Anderson, Spartanburg etc.....how can a traditional public A school compete against that? Privates (whether they recruit or not) are at a massive advantage vs a public school especially at the lower classifications A/AA

Bishop England girls basketball team beat the all-black Columbia team a few years ago! But seriously, those private schools should at least have to play up a class or two!

I get where you guys are coming from but I wanted to post about my , my daughters and granddaughter’s high school Bishop England High School. Bishop England does not recruit. There is no budget for it. The school has existed since around WW1. We have won one basketball state championship in boys and 2 in football over all those years. We started winning state championships in girls sports and boys spring sports sometimes in the 90s and the years after. That’s just the demographic we play in. The teams competing for championships year in and out in the Lowcountry are also rans in football . I’ve heard people complain about this for awhile. My granddaughter played in the state finals against Gray. We were out muscled but had a 2 point game with less than 2 min. My wife said we shouldn’t have to play against them. I looked on line and saw where people said the same about us. I do know in our 2A region only 3 teams fielded a girls soccer team. I know nothing about Christ Church but they moved up to play in the 2A state finals. I apologize for rambling but I can only speak for one school. We won some and take our lumps but we don’t recruit.

My cousin got recruited by Bishop England to play baseball in the late 90s. He pitched for 2 seasons there.

Not a fan for reason that they have better $ due to their private status

& therefore better access to resources & talent compared to the public 2A/1A schools, which are mostly rural schools w/ nowhere near the resources & the talent pool is limited to the kids coming up in those communities.
They either A) need to be given a separate classification in SCHSL ranks to contest state titles or B) there needs to be an attendance multiplier applied to them to reclassify them out of the 2A/1A ranks.
You had mentioned OCA, had seen video clip where things got heated after the Lower State final between them & Andrew Jackson. OCA's broadcast announcer said something to effect of "wouldn't expect different given their parents" referring to AJ, pretty much being dismissive of their school & community.

And we were really good at baseball and football my 4 years. Just lucky we had good talent for that short period of time. We LOVED playing against the private schools and crushing them. I remember my freshman year we beat Christ church by 50. But I believe they hadn't started recruiting player at that point. In baseball we routinely pounded them and Southside Christian. One time they didn't even line up to shake our hands post game. We were just a bunch of country bumpkins to them I guess lol

Played FB & wrestled at 2A school. Think the talk w/ charters & privates competing at SCHSL level

Wasn't as much issue then, although there was chatter developing, b/c it was the Olympic/"non-revenue" sports that schools like Bishop England, Christ Church, Southside Christian, etc were finding their most success. But over last decade to decade & half, these schools literally gained a foothold in every sport, even football & basketball. Just looked through the SCHSL record books, literally the only sport they haven't gotten a foothold in & start running away w/ the state titles is wrestling
