Not looking good for the USWNT

2 draws - one of them scoreless - and one not-terribly-impressive win over the weakest team in the group.
I still pull for the USWNT, or any US national team for that matter. I'm not a fan of the politics of Rapinoe and Morgan, but those are two among many. And both are, without argument, outstanding athletes and players who have contributed much to the past successes of the USWNT.
I can keep my politics and my sports separate. But maybe that's just me these days.
Just curious - if Clemson had some athletes that were outspoken politically, in similar ways that Morgan and Rapinoe have been, would you all recant your Clemson fandom as well and start rooting against Clemson? Would you let politics get in the way of your love for Clemson? I can be a fan of a team - my country's team - and not be a fan of every athlete. It's really not a hard distinction to make. But like I said, maybe that's just me.
I'm hoping our women can pull it together and rally through the rest of the World Cup, but I'm not optimistic after the group play that many sports writers called "uninspired" - and I'd agree with that assessment.
I'll never pull against my Tigers. They represent me, even if their individual views don't (and I'm sure many do not!). And I'll never pull against my national teams. Not gonna happen. But, you know, maybe that's just me.

I hope they fly to Russia with thc vape pens and rot in the lowest Russian prison never to see the light of day. They are all worthless unpatriotic cowards who do not deserve to represent this great nation. The sheer disrespect of our national anthem on a world stage is shameful and disgusting. Quite frankly they should be tried for treason and would be had this been 200 years ago. If Clemson had an athlete act this way, I would 100% not support them or that sport.

One issue I can support is the women's team getting paid the same as the men's national team. They put just as many butts in the seats (if not more) and historically win at a higher clip. This is a major issue that permeates society, but garners more attention when it is on television. Done with the politics.

I support them getting paid based on their actual value. I have not looked at it in a while but last time I checked the value was less than the men but that may have changed.

Men’s soccer earns six times more than women’s soccer. Women wanting to get paid the same amount is absolutely absurd. What you’re proposing is communism where everybody gets paid the same regardless of value. Go read Animal Farm then come back and discuss.

Kind of like saying 'I'm for clean air' or 'Pay your fair share'. What does 'same' mean, exactly? Same dollar amount? Same percentage of the take? Same combination of percentage of profits vs guaranteed money? Men's soccer generates a whole lot more money than women's soccer. What, exactly, does 'fair' mean?

The women intentionally took less pay for a guaranteed paycheck and benefits.
They agreed to a contract and then started whining about it.
Women's soccer doesn't have the value of men's soccer.
They could have gone to a model where they got paid for wins or percentage of advertising revenue or whatever but they chose not to do that.

So revenue means nothing to you? You must not be a business person.
No way in hell they should be paid as much, plus the competition is not even close.
They bring in so much less than the men, but you want equal pay huh?

I haven't spent a dime on tickets, merchandise, etc. since most of the pro leagues--and Clemson and other college teams--fell headfirst into the BLM organization propaganda. Black lives do matter, but I cannot abide the Marxist leanings of the organization. As far as I can tell, all those donations did nothing to make the average black life any better or to create equality or whatever other hashtag they used; it just bought a few folks at the top some million dollar mansions. Exploitation is what it is.
I don't want politics in my football. I am a Christian, but I am ok with keeping religion out of it too just so that it remains a neutral, feel-good experience for all.

6 have apparently chosen either not to sing along or place their hands over their hearts during the national anthem at this year's World Cup. I don't like that. I'm not a fan of it at all. But that means that 17 of them are singing the anthem and putting their hands over their hearts. And that's also part of what makes this country unique - they're able to do that. North Koreans do that and they get sent off to prison. Same with Iranians and many others. Our players - just like our people - have the right to dissent and to express themselves and their opinions. We're not going to support every opinion. I don't expect them all to be Republicans. I don't care who they vote for. I'll support them. But most of all I support the red, white and blue uniforms, even if I don't support each individual wearing them.
TD all y'all want. I'm quite comfortable with not hating and letting politics get in the way of me enjoying my sports and my national team.

For what you believe in; many of em are very effective at role modeling their values. That's the thing; most of the people who are against politics mixing with sports are only against it when the views are different from their own.

On this team, we have gay women and straight women, some married to women, some married to men. Many with their own children. You could argue that there's a role model for pretty much everyone in the group, but if you only read/listen to conservative news, then you only hear about the more liberal athletes. Our country is very diverse and, unfortunately, very divided right now. This team is actually fairly representative of our nation at this time. Sure, I would like it if they all shared my values. But they don't. I can live with that.

soccer are in the rear view mirror. We’ll still be one of the powers but shouldn’t think we’re going to walk over everyone or win every World Cup. Unlike the men’s side where our best athletes have grown up in more “American” sports instead of soccer, I think a large # of the best girl/women athletes are choosing soccer at a early age which will keep us competitive on the world stage. Other countries have finally started developing their women’s soccer programs - the US was ahead of many on that front.

Europe has really caught up. Title IX was critical in developing the US women's soccer team as a world power, but as European nations have begun making their development infrastructure available to women they were always going to catch up and eventually (as we're likely seeing this year) surpass the US. Europe's development infrastructure for soccer is just absolutely lightyears ahead of the US.

Here's the interesting thing

I remember a few years back when BLM was all the rage in sports and everything and Clemson came out with the very simple, very effective "UNITY" slogan and t-shirts. That's all that really needed to be said. Clemson football was and is made up of young men from tough upbringings and privileged, some black, some white, some likely mixed, some rich, some poor, some into rock, some into country, some into rap & hip hop. Some go to church. Some don't. But here's the thing - they play AS A TEAM. They manage to put all their many differences aside - even disregard them entirely - and function as a TEAM. As ONE unit.
I see that the USWNT. All many of us are seeing is politics that are different from our own. But like Clemson football, this team is made up of black and white, privileged and difficult upbringings, some very liberal, possibly some that are conservative, some gay, some straight. But they don't see themselves that way. They are a TEAM. They get along and function as ONE unit and even as a family, in spite of their differences.
Would be nice (cue some ### By Yah music) if we could at least make an effort to do the same.
I'm a conservative Christian straight white male, and I will gladly cheer on a liberal, atheist gay black female who is driving to score the winning goal for Team USA. I'm not cheering on her values. I'm cheering on THE TEAM. Team USA.

You lost me as soon as you mentioned women's sports.
In all seriousness, I wouldn't watch or support anyone if they constantly beat the drum of narcissism, disdain for their country, disdain for Clemson, hate for their fellow man, or preached immortality. I'm not lending my support to a team, or individual like that. They're instantly relegated to my "no watch list".
My allegiances go something like this 1) God 2) Family ...and a little further down the list is Clemson...then way further down the list are sports teams / athletes.
Needless to say teams / athletes aren't entitled to my support, or allegiance. Especially if they play boring sports. That goes double for female athletes because they're 2x as boring.
Women's Soccer in the U.S. is an afterthought and always will be. These women surely aren't helping their cause, and that's good because they don't deserve anyone's support.

Not pulling for the US or anyone else. They don’t respect our country and look like a bunch of spoiled bxtches. Sickens me when our anthem is playing and they show little to no respect while the opposing team is singing and definitely all in on representing their country. Most on that team are a disgrace and should not even be allowed to put the uniform on.

This is the greatest country in the world. It's not perfect and has made mistakes. The good things this country has done for the rest of the world is way more than the bad. They are so naive to how bad things can really be. Instead of disrespecting the flag why don't they show respect for the freedom they have. They forget about all of the people who sacrificed so much for all of us. They are whiney spoiled liberals who hate this country. That's right you don't see conservatives disrespecting the flag the way liberals do.

I agree, this is the greatest country in the world, but you said it yourself, “they’re naive”. I think that is exactly right. They’re not scholars or social scientists, they’re athletes. I think they’re wrong, but as an American I still support their right to speak their mind.
Here’s my opinion on the flag.
The Flag is the visual representation of the IDEALS that this country stands for. Now, we are not a perfect country and we don’t always live up to those IDEALS, but those IDEALS are always worthy of our respect, along with the hundreds of thousands of Americans that came before us and gave their lives, that those IDEALS might continue to have the chance of becoming a reality.
That’s why I stand for the Flag.
I consider those that don’t share my view to be naive and uninformed, but I don’t hate them for it.
