RealTalk, Any of yous guise ever packed up the family

Aug 22, 2022, 11:07 AM

and moved cities on a whim. I can keep my job, work remote, and wife can get a new job. We never really WANTED to stay in York County, but our families were here so we moved home. Well, my family is pretty much all dead. There is a brother in York County for now and an Aunt in her 80's. We are taking this opportunity to finally make that leap.

The kids have only lived here, we have only lived here other than 6 years in Clemson. All my friends are local. This gives me a weirdly excited feeling and a whole helluva lot of anxiety.

Those of you that have done it, did it suck? Did you regret it? My biggest concern is moving to a city we know nobody (Wilmington possibly) and trying to buy a house while selling two houses here. I guess I could sell Mom's, buy one there, then sell my house here. Just seems stressful AF (but not stressful enough to keep it from happening).

Anyways, this post is 15% getting shit off my chest, 50% asking for feedback, and 35% bait for some good ole American shit talking

I moved from Raleigh to Cary. AMA.

FR FR tho:

Moving 15 minutes away was a pain in the ### because we hired movers for 95% of our stuff but that 5% was a pain doing trips during naps, after bedtime. Assuming that since its a bigger move than mine, you will do 100% of the move, taking at least that hassle out.

When we jumped ship, the housing market was on fire and I knew my house would not have a problem selling.... even though I still had anxiety attacks about two mortgage payments and so forth.

In regards to not knowing anyone: your kids are old enough that this will impact them. Meeting new friends in a completely new city is tough. RulezJr is still young enough that the move didn't impact her because all of her "friends" are family or we moved closer to the ones we knew. Fortunately, living in a very kid heavy neighborhood, there are tons of families with kids that we have met at the pool. In a year, we have a pretty solid neighborhood group of four families with a few alternates that we hang out independently from. They will meet new friends at school and in your neighborhood, if you choose to do the suburbia route like we did.

How many square miles is Cary now?

Aug 22, 2022, 11:21 AM [ in reply to Yes ]

It was compact when I lived there in early 2000s. Now it stretches out to Jordan Lake. Crazy amount of development. Takes ~30min just to drive across town.

Suburbia is the FUTURE

Aug 22, 2022, 11:22 AM [ in reply to Yes ]

Probably

I think I could sell Mom's put a downpayment on one, move into it, then sell mine. But I get anxiety over that kind of stuff because that is ALOT of money tied up into two houses.

We would certainly hire a mover, but I'd probably get rid of 30% of what I own. We have amassed alot of shizz over the years.

Dood, no one does that. Except for maybe now that a lot of people can work remote. But everyone is going back to the office once they realize clemsonrulez08®isn't doing #### while "working from home".

That was the suckiest thing about leaving college and getting a real job.....Now I have to live "here". Suddenly we aren't tied to a 30 mile radius of the office, but we done poured the footers on the house.

If I had to choose between a new boat and making 15 various upgrades or repairs to the house. I think I would go with the new boat. Life is short. Get the boat.

Family is relative I guess, at least size.

Aug 22, 2022, 11:23 AM

As it wa just me and wife and a dog. I kinda did that when I moved to Clemson in 2015. But then a few months later my wife was just crying every day, and we ended up back down here.

I wanted to do exactly what you said when wife if got a new job working from home right before covid, but they told her she needed to be in SC. Now she spends a lot of time flying to New Jersey and PA, so that seems kinda dumb we have to say here.

I'd move to Eleuthera tomorrow, but for some reason my wife feels like she needs to be anchored to about 4 square miles in Mt Pleasant or IOP. When she gets tired enough of me complaining about wanting to move and kicks me out, I imagine I'll just end up going somewhere else on my own.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wouldn't do it on a whim.

Aug 22, 2022, 11:23 AM

Check out the destination for a few weekend trips. Make sure you are comfortable with long term employment opportunities (like if you lost your job for some reason). Weigh out pros y cons.

Moving is a hassle. Moving is expensive. Gotta consider the impact on the kids.

Time is your biggest asset, so use it to make the right decision.

since 2006. The timing is such now that, if we wait any longer, we aint ever leaving. I am not living beside my parent's house after we sell it. I don't think I could do that. It would bother me too much. And if I sell my place and buy another in York County, then I am a lifer. So it is now or maybe not until they all graduate high school in 10 years.

Aug 22, 2022, 12:12 PM

I'd check into that pretty carefully. Flood and wind pool will be the big ones up there. I think Wilmington gets hurricanes as much as any city does.

I was Islamorada/Marathon bound until $20k-30k/insurance/year and 1% property taxes brought me back to reality.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think where we are looking is far enough off the coastline

Aug 22, 2022, 12:26 PM

where that does not come into play. We are not buying a $1.2M beachhouse, it is off the coast a good bit. We talked with a realtor some just to get started looking and we felt good about what she told us. Now, as we get more serious, I'll do my due diligence, but thanks for the heads up.

it actually costs me more because it is not my principal residence, which makes zero sense logically.

Aug 22, 2022, 3:32 PM

When i was down the street 2 years ago, it was about $1300/year just wind/hail. Flood was about $600/year because technically Wasn't in a flood zone...but my neighbor was.

I think it was the about the same for the place I bought in Murrell's inlet in March, but I can't remember. Flood was $1200/year.

If you have 2 houses currently, sell one and buy a vacation property in beach area and rent that one out / use it.

Aug 22, 2022, 12:05 PM

I wouldn't do it just to move though.

Consider your financial gains pros/cons and the kids. I had to move due to job but I was lucky that my oldest was in elementary school and too young to remember moving or having it affect friendships.

Selling now? Well, you better know where you're going and you better have it lined up before you put the signs in the yards. Renting something temporarily is a royal pain in the taint and expensive. Just went through that last year. Plus it costs an anusload of money now to get out of leases.

All of it is stressful to put it mildly - or was to Fireball's family. Especially if you don't know anyone where you are moving.

My advice - don't do it unless it's a financial decision that betters your family and quality of life. Otherwise you'll regret leaving your friends, your kids will miss their friends, your wife may hate her new gig, etc...

IF I had the luxury of two houses to sell, I'd look at selling one and buying a smaller 2nd home near the coast or Wilmington if you desire. Ease into the deep end without pulling a hammy doing a nutcracker off the diving board.

That's my .02 worth and I usually get back change.

Carolinas in 2008. Some thoughts…

Bought a house before selling the old house… both declined in value in a tough msrket. Worst stress I have had in my life.

Had I waited it out, we could have bought any number of properties (lake, land, etc) and made serious bank on the recovery

Real estate swings are wilder where there are a lot of second homes, so choose your destination and timing wisely.

Would make the move over in a heartbeat, but would do things a bit differently. We’re actually now at a similar point in our lives to you in that I can work from anywhere, but I am now focused on having everything in order to be able to capitalize on the market dislocation I believe is inevitable.

Good luck!

Just 2 cents. The happiness resulting from a move seems

Aug 22, 2022, 1:41 PM

mostly relational. We've made three moves that were discretionary, 1st and 3rd fabulous, the 2nd was not good. The determining factor was that in the good ones the decision was either motivated by or at least supported by relational opportunities in the new city.

This will effect different people different ways. On one end of the scale, some people can be parachuted into a strange city and acclimate swimmingly. Everybody thinks that is them, btw, but it is few, imo. On the other end, some people move to be with grandkids. From my experience, the most important assessment is of the spouse. I lean more to acclimating anywhere, so I pushed a move to a beautiful mountain place with no existing friendships. Wonderful house and view. I was happy as a clam. Turns out that MissTulsa doesn't thrive in that, and her feeling of isolation got worse over time rather than better. I had not taken that into account. So we made another move. All is great.

If you know that both you and your wife are knife-in-your-teeth pioneers, don't worry about all this and go for it. As one poster said, doing something on your own is a great things. #1 was that for us because of distance (1200 miles), though we had friends there.

None of that may apply to you. Take as needed.

You are thinking rationally and about the right stuff. Good probability a move could work out well. If not then you’re not “really” locked in. Move again and you will have a whole lot less crap the second time.
A little risk and adventure ain’t a bad thing.
