Do y'all have a "thinking place"

One of our guest bedrooms opens to the roof over our front porch. Been sneaking out there for a few minutes every night to decompress and wind down before bed. Normally i'll take a pour of bourbon with me and hang out there until I get too cold or Red calls me in to not have adult time.
Been going through some #### here lately, so its been nice to find a small escape that doesn't have to do with watching Blacked with the volume either completely off or set to the lowest level in the guest bathroom.
Went out there at lunch to cool down after my Peloton ride. I feel this may be one of the last warm days we get this year, so it felt great to stretch out the legs and clear my mind before heading back to the office.

Pro tip - Put the phone down before wiping. Then go wash hands, then go back and get fone.

I have left it by the toilet at home. In a public bathroom I put it back in my pocket before wiping. Should have clarified that. Putting the phone down in a public restroom is stoopid, and I shouldn't make assumptions.

Love my wife, but there are times I just do not want to think or listen, etc.
T's and P's for you, hope your situation improves.
As I tell my wife, who is currently unable to walk due to knee injury, things can be worse and other people have must worse situations than we do, as we are blessed in many ways.

sit out there and throw a line in from time to time when I need some quiet. Just me, the water, and the trees. The hammock between the apple trees is good too when the weather is right.
Also, I like to hang out in the chicken house with all the chickens from time to time. They are little clowns, always entertaining and puts me in a happy mood bring around them. It ain't quiet in there though.

Either the back porch, the garage, or the man room. The first two, like yours, are weather dependent. Ditto on the bourbon. I keep the collection in my man room so the laziness usually keeps me there.
I like the front porch after work with a beer when the weather finally gets warmish.

It has a refrigerator, TV, and a chair, so it's a good place to go watch #### and rub one out. At least that's what my wife thinks I do out there. She'd rather believe that than the reality that I'm going out there to get the eff away from her, so whatever.
Unfortunately the shed goes away when I move to the new house, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do then.

Deer stand. Lots of time to think about whatever I want to think about and flush out what I don't. As I've gotten older, I also do more looking than shooting. Being out in nature is the goal. Occasionally I do pull the trigger, more to justify to my wife my absences. It's harder to sell her on the idea that I want to go sit in a tree by myself for 3-4 hours otherwise.

but that only works now when the 3 year old doesn't figure out I'm in there. But I did set up a TV couch and coffee table on the workshop side of the garage, so pretty much there unless the 17 year and 13 year old are watching ####### "Riverdale" on Netflix. Then maybe the back porch? Or front porch depending on which door I can get out of without anyone realizing I got out.

spending a few minutes alone at the end of some days isn't an avenue to "escape" her or reality. Should be looked as being a mental reset for myself. Society doesn't really look too kindly at the notion of men needing some sort of avenue to decompress. Been getting back onto a consistent Peloton routine so that, along with spending a few minutes alone on the roof, has been extremely good for my mental health.

After four months I still haven't closed on the new house. Long story, but we were finally able to start moving things in about ten days ago. Planning to convert a bedroom into my home office/thinking place. Grayscale tones with wood, leather, flannel, and fur accents. Got a little bar cart to match my desk where I'll keep a decanter, a tumbler, a glass pipe, and my little jar. I hope to have it all done by Christmas.

Got insurance to cover them and to cover our stuff. They were already 90% packed up and moved out, so there was plenty of room. Cool thing is we're poised to close now and once we do — biggity bam — we're already moved in.

which is supposed to be a formal living room/office. We are picking up furniture next month for that room. Same idea and we are going for a lounge vibe with some mid-century modern feel. I imagine this will function as a "retreat" for me. Need to close it off and put a door so I can get a little bit more privacy.

Our basement is typically the place.
Nov 10, 2021, 3:02 PM
|
|
My wife doesn't really demand, but expects that we watch TV together EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT.. I bought a 70" TV for the basement for a reason. Its typically really quiet down there as I put in a good door between the unfinished and finished to drown out the furnace and all. The kids are all the way up on second floor on other side of house too. Its perfect.
However, I stopped going down a while back as I was going down there and drinking UP A STORM. So I had to cut back to basically nothing. I think I am about ready and able to spend some alone time down there without dropkicking my liver. Great comfy couch and good blankets too. Now that I am thinking, I need one of those god awful gawdy recliners down there.

No so much a thinking place, but definitely a "zen" spot.
Nov 10, 2021, 3:02 PM

There's a reading room right off the master that when you lay on the couch and look at the window, it reminds me of the mountains. And we did not anticipate it becoming an "art" room, but it's where we've hung some pieces we collected. Between the art, the coziness, the wall color...it's my favorite room in the house (even above the man cave), and it hits the zen button laying there watching the little dude play.

The bar in my house. We call it the Jazz Room. The only lighting is by candle - to get away from electronics and rest my eyes. We use it for entertaining, but I also use it for my alone time. Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits.

I miss my morning walks w/ the dog
Nov 10, 2021, 3:30 PM
|
|
used to take a nice 30 minute walk around the hood every morning. Working east coast hours, I'd be up well before anyone else. No leash (which I hardly ever put him on leash)...never hardly saw anyone.
With the baby in our room I don't want to set an alarm for 615 when she gets up at 7 (mostly for the wife). Baby's moving soon...so hope to get these going.
It's great during duck season too...there's a few blinds on the lake you can see from my hood and my dog's ears perk up when he hears em calling then hears gun shots.
Within the house it's usually my office or the back porch.

Bunch of non-boat owning poors in this thread I see
Nov 10, 2021, 3:39 PM
|

I try to take a Saturday morning boat ride by myself, and get about as far away from land as I possibly can and just sit. Lately I've been thinking a jet ski would be the ideal watercraft for this, much less hassle uncovering, etc. The Sea Doo RXT 300's are ridiculously fast too.
Usually during the week my tractor time is my thinking time though. Mow grass, move some dirt around, whatever. Just put my ear plugs in and zone out. We've got an unfinished basement area I want to eventually turn into a man cave, it's directly below the master suite so would work out well. Unfortunately it's about #5892 on my to do list, so I doubt I'll get to it for awhile.
