NIL, Collective, etc - question

Dec 9, 2022, 1:57 PM

How does this mess work??

When it was first announced, I'd thought that it would be limited to things like commercials, jersey sales, personal appearances/autographs, etc, which made sense to me. But now there are "collectives" that a kid signs with. Can they just be given money with basically nothing in return - like no commercial, no meet & greet, no social media promotions, etc?

And where does all the money come from? I'm assuming it CANNOT come from the university, that that would be a violation, but if it comes from boosters (aka "collectives"?) or businesses or whatever, that it's ok?

In short, if my 17yo son was a highly recruited football player (which, sadly, he is not), I get how recruiting works with the position coach and maybe head coach coming to visit, and official visits to campus/games, etc. But how does the NIL/collective get introduced? Would the same person who's recruiting bring it up ("We can hook you up with a car dealership in town - for filming one commercial or for posting it on social media, they'll give you a brand new 2022 Whatever - keep posting on social media, and they'll continue to compensate you for that")? Or does someone just hand them an envelope full of money or a check or whatever?

Old, out-dated minds want to know.

I'm an old guy too, and I don't think I will ever understand NIL. I thought it would work like o2bnclemson. I also thought there would be an online website you could go to to find out what each player gets and from whom. I expected to see lots of commercials with players hawking stuff, or meet and greets where the players would sign autographs for a price. It seems like if a player goes to a school and a coach yells at him too much, or if he is not making "bank" like he thinks he should, he's outta her Eyes! I have no idea how this works!

Truthfully, I think NIL and the transfer portal are killing college football! I'm all for transferring once, and if you do, you have to sit out for a season. This business where you can transfer as many time as you want to, and get to play immediately is crazy. To me, it is also crazy that you can go to a school, get NIL money for doing nothing, then transfer to a different school like the current Texas QB did. It just seems like the schools with the richest alumni who are willing to spend on players will rise to the top.
GO TIGERS!!!

So.... nobody really knows anything about how this works

and what's going on? Or do you know, but not allowed to tell and violate the Code of the Secret NIL Handshake?

Basically a player can use his/hers person to get paid for anything

…sign this for $$$$
Do a 5 second online commercial for $$$$
Come to my kids birthday party $$$$
Where this shirt when you can $$$$$
…pretty much whatever you can do and get paid for it is fair game….it’s a total joke

NIL is just a job. Some jobs require work, some not so much.
