Swofford addressed league financials, ACC Network and more

Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford took to the podium Monday afternoon to discuss the health and direction of the conference. Swofford answered questions about the possibility of a 24-hour ACC Network, the financial viability of the conference compared to other conferences and the addition of a medical observer to the press box this season Full Story »

So basically, Swofford and I have diametrically opposed positions on just about every issue.

Sounds about right.

The ACC will never move forward with Swofford.

Clemson will go shopping about a year before the grant of rights expires. So they will be shopping around 2025. If the Big Twelve is the only conference that has interest, then that is where they will have to look. It is clear the SEC or Big Ten have other interests.

Clemson should have played that card before now. fsu is lucky a conference would want to associate with them in spite of their success on the field. Jimbo is a terrible embarrassment to them and to the conference, sad thing is they don't understand it.

Jul 22, 2015, 7:43 AM

SEC and Big 10 both would be interested in FSU and probably Georgia Tech. Our only other option would likely be the Big 12, but they would want a 'dance partner' for us. VT, maybe?

2021 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link

Wow, this does not sound good for the following reasons

Jul 21, 2015, 8:30 PM

1. Unequal cost of attendance at schools is something we will have to live with. We knew the system had warts. We have to wait and see if it affects decisions of recruits.

Wow, this is a nightmare and Dabo saw it coming before most. You can bet the house it is going to affect the decision making of recruits. Just when we have reached a point where our program can recruit with anyone, this comes along. Recruits will go where the money is better. They are not going to listen to a song and dance about cost of living comparisons in certain areas. They are going to follow the money. Oh well, level playing field was fun while it lasted.

2. He is talking about an ACC Channel in terms of decades. It has always been understood that they were working on something by the next couple of years and now he is dropping terms like contract expires, the market is changing, etc.

3. the revenue disparity is significant and he used what sounded like excuses to talk it away.

Inequality in cost of attendance is a HUGE issue....

Jul 22, 2015, 8:06 AM

Not only is this issue an economic reality but it will absolutely influence the decisions of many recruits and adversely affect the competitive balance.

Pretty sure I'm reading his timetable for an ACC "Channel"

Jul 21, 2015, 8:33 PM

Ahh, he almost got away from having to answer a question. Sorry you may two minutes late to your wine and cheese party.

No worries, the answers will be the same 5 years from now if this blueball buffoon is still ACC commissioner.

The conflict of interest alone is reason to have him removed. And, he's excited about medical observers, third party whomevers (because who is a medical observer) with access to the medical information of players. Think about the pandora's box that opens up.

I'm tired of that being used as an insult - especially with regard to UNC and their crappy fanbase.

Why do some Clemson fans use that as a criticism? I don't get it.

It's a slap to their ###### fanbase and boring tailgates.

And, typical of Swoffy. More worried about not having to deal with something he does not want to. He'd rather hobnob & attend parties than attend to what's best for the ACC.

He'll run the ACC into the ground like a drunk frat party boy running daddy's company into the ground.

Swofford is an idiot. I have never seen anyone say so much, while saying so little. He talks in circles and lacks even a hint of imagination, vision, or the tyou of leadership needed to move forward. Frankly, I am embarassed.

In sum, according to Swofford: sit back and observe, do nothing of significance, and claim the high road.

Some of you have bizarre ideas. Now I know everybody hated Swofford because of his UNC connection. And that hasn't really done them any good lately. Football is mediocre at best. Basketball is still good, but not the power they were a few years back. And their baseball had even slipped back a bit. They excel in some of the other sports that nobody cares about. But nobody cares. But this is the simple truth. If not for Swofford handling expansion in a proactive fashion , the ACC would be a footnote in history about now. Now I know some of you wax poetic about being in another conference. But the ACC schedule almost assures a school like Clemson of a 9-10 win season if they are any good at all. You would much rather play Wake on the road than an Okie St, or someone like that. You get one, or two, tough games out of the ACC every year. After that it is pretty smooth sailing. So be careful what you wish for. Football wise Clemson has it made right now. Basketball will always strive to be average. About what most want.

flag link

he wants Carolina to be past probation before the TV

Jul 21, 2015, 9:22 PM

Network gets started. I totally agree, his Unc tail needs to go. This is sad, as a conference we will be second Tier to the conferences with a network. Clemson will have to raise a 100 million a year to cover the gap and after 10-12 years the gap for the conference coffers will even be bigger. We need to raise the money to leave the conference. 50 million now for several hundred million in the gap without a network. We need to move or he needs to go.

We should not wait, we have way to much at risk. The slow kill should not happen to us be cause of the teams that can't draw the attendance and TV audience.

Wow, how does he get away with this. Us and FSU and VT are all losing bad on this deal.

The SEC doesn't want us. Do you really want to be in the Big XII...I sure as #### don't. We barely have anything in common with those schools. Swofford needs to be fired and the ACC needs new direction first. We still have time before the grant of rights is up. All efforts should be focused on ousting Swofford and bringing in the sharpest mind possible that can guide our conference to at least competitive monetary intake compared to other schools. The schools need to man the #### up and really put it to Swofford. This clown has got to go!

He couldn't take us farther down the tubes if he had a plan in place to do it. What an absolute embarrassment he is. Sadly the "hot tea sippers' who have run our conference into the ground can't see how exponentially under the other conferences we are. Did I mention embarrassment? I thought so, but it is worth repetition. When will we, as a conference, realize that he is not an answer to anything. Catering to round ball is not where the money nor success lies. He is such a liability.

Jul 22, 2015, 9:18 AM

SWofford all hat no cattle, all he did was a bunch of talking of what they have been thinking about, how about following through and actually doing some of those things. Guess he has been busy putting tar in some holes (UNC COVERUP). How much longer must the ACC endure this character??

A manikin from Belks would have gotten as much done for the ACC by just being there. The ACC has so much potential to grow but until someone that is not a part of that research triangle mentality comes to power nothing changes. It is all about basketball. Does anyone else ever get sick of Coach K and Roy Williams and Swofford like I do?

The ACC is so painful to be a part of. Unfortunately, now we have likely missed any chance to do anything but remain a part of it and do what we can to survive.
