never in my life

Oct 30, 2012, 11:22 AM

Have I seeen a more overblown reaction to an incident than I have seen with this ML thing. Yes he got injured. Yes it looked bad. Yes he's a great kid. But his own day? Posts all over the internet? Twitter? Facebook? Really? He got hurt playing football and got his own freaking day. The people up the street lost their son in Afganistan, protecting ML while he rehabed his knee. He's not coming back. Call me insensitive but I think the whole thing is downright silly. Marcus I am sorry you got hurt and I hope you can rehab and get your millions, but don't expect me say or do any more than that.

Oh yeah spot the ball. Beat the Dukies.

The disrespect to our fallen soldiers by giving him his own day is what bothers me the most about this whole situation.

Re: never in my life

Oct 30, 2012, 12:15 PM

The ML situation may be overblown, but it has absolutey nothing to do with the fallen soldiers. There are completed unrelated and it is beyond me how you connected the two.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Veterans in my family seem to disagree with you

Oct 30, 2012, 12:17 PM

Where are the celebrations when they return injured to wish them well? Where are the days in their honor when they don't return? I am putting an injured knee in perspective. Of course they don't belong in the same category, but for some reason the injured knee if a bigger deal to our Governor.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree that our priorities are out of line

Oct 30, 2012, 12:23 PM

but I think this particular case comes down to the situation these young men are in.

I think most people support the soldiers but not the war that the government is making them fight it so it's hard to rally around a cause you are against. Whereas ML is playing a game that everyone loves and wants to see.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think there should be a parade every time a soldier

Oct 30, 2012, 12:40 PM

is injured, but just trying to put in perspective how small his knee injury is and that it does not deserve a day in his honor. He is alive!

Re: never in my life

Oct 30, 2012, 3:59 PM [ in reply to Re: never in my life ]

I'm no fan of the governor, but am I missing something here? Did she turn down a request to honor a wounded veteran? Or did someone just connect these two things out of thin air?

We can have different days for different people. Sure, naming a day after a football player is kinda silly, but politicians do this kind of honorary thing all the time. Congress names public buildings after random people no one has heard of. Special weeks and days are proclaimed regularly by every level of public official from the president, to governors, to mayors. The person honored gets a plaque or a framed piece of paper and a photo-op with the politician. If you think someone else should receive this not-so-high honor, then you should contact the governor's office and make such a request. I'm guessing it would not be hard to be successful if the person was worthy.

But seriously, are you going to complain next when a local sports star is given the key to the city, because all sorts of other persons have not been given the key first?

Could it be indicative of our misplaced priorities as a society/culture? Celebrity garners more attention and accolades than true American Heroes?

Exactly

Oct 30, 2012, 11:38 AM

I called trash and said I should move to another state today by a SC fan because I don't support Lattimore day. Just what exactly has he done to deserve it, he got injured playing football (completely common), if it's that easy to get a day named after you where is Gaines Adams day? I'm done with showing my sympathy towards the whole situation, we gave them some compassion and they turn around and get even more unclassy.

Oct 30, 2012, 11:40 AM

It is way overblown. If u think about it, it's the same sort of thing on a larger scale at Penn State, with statues of coaches. We should not be revering "man".

Personally, I worked very hard many years ago, was a good athlete, and had a bad injury. I expected, nor would have wanted any of this.

Furthermore, no one is quite as "good" as they claim or all the public claims. Only one person is "good" and none of us are him.

Re: never in my life

Oct 30, 2012, 11:55 AM

Ronald Rouse died. Marcus Lattimore still has a pretty decent life before him even if he doesn't play football.

If you think someone needs prayers or a certain event was tragic, it's the case of Rouse. For a 17-year-old to be taken from his family, friends and community is something really tragic.

It really sucks for Lattimore, but when I see "Prayers for Marcus Lattimore," our governor declaring Oct. 29 Marcus Lattimore Day and 1,500 people showing up for a get-well party, it's just too much.

Are we so skewed in our way of thinking to maintain a mindset that this is a tragedy?

It really makes me take a step back when we live in a world where thousands of people can die in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and other places and no one bats an eye. A football player gets hurt and this is what happens.

It's pathetic. We're all idiots with no sense of the world. If you want to pray for Marcus, that's all well and good, but please, don't forget that there are really terrible things happening in the world as you read this. Things much more terrible than a dislocated knee.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: never in my life

Oct 30, 2012, 12:08 PM

Was it overblown? Maybe. I'm a veteran, had friends and family over there too. Some didn't make it back. You know what we talked about while we were over there? Football. My liutenant was an Ohio State grad. We went back and forth all the time. A sergeant I worked with was a big Georgia fan (I'm a coot btw). Sure, military folks die. I saw plenty of Marines being unloaded from helo's missing parts.

Everyone that was there signed up for the military. ML signed up for football. But there are some reasons ML had a day, and every military member doesn't:

-ML was one day, Oct 29th, 2012. It's not every year
-Veteran's Day is every year, it's where you honor veterans.
-Memorial Day is every year, it's where you honor fallen veterans.
-ML is a better person 'off the field' than many military members. Say what you want, I've been there, most people in the military aren't volunteering at children's hospitals in their spare time (including me).
-ML did not ask for this. It was done and organized by students at USC. I'm sure if you asked Lattimore if he wanted it, he would say no, or ask for it to be Gamecock day for all Gamecocks, because that is the kind of person he is.

Trying to minimaize people dying for our country

Oct 30, 2012, 12:14 PM

You need to find a new hobby or interest because you clearly take coot football too seriously. I'm glad it helped you get through a tough time and I'm glad you made it back safe, but please ask the families of those who didn't make it back which person deserves a day of their own. Have some respect! I too have veterans in my family and I feel very fortunate that they have made it home alive, though not all uninjured. They do not share your idea that it's "no big deal".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Trying to minimaize people dying for our country

Oct 30, 2012, 12:24 PM

then they need to get over it. Every time someone finds out I served, they thank me. I do not want it. I signed up to do a job. I did my job. I was compensated. Life goes on. Some people didn't come back, if they had, and you asked them if they wanted a day, they would tell you they did not.

To try and smear something that STUDENTS at USC organized is just wrong, they didn't ask Haley to make it ML Day. She did that on her own (or at the advisement of her staff). So if you disagree with Haley that's fine. But saying that its an insult to military, just because you believe they deserve it more is asinine. How many people in the state do you think know Marcus Lattimore's name and that off the field he dedicates his time to better everyone around him? How many people know the names of military personnel that are from SC? How inspiring are their after hours activities?

Marcus is the epitome of hard work and over coming adversity, and will now being doing that at a level (two blown out knees) that to my memory has not been seen in college football. And continues to do it with hard work and determination.

Do veteran's deserve recognition? Sure. Does that take away from letting people be inspired by a story for someone people have followed for years born and raised in SC? Not at all.

Sure, find it insulting that a bunch of people got together to wish a young man a happy birthday. I would hate to live in your world.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's why they went but that isn't what happened

Oct 30, 2012, 12:38 PM

Spurrier made it about him and his feud with Dabo. Haley tried to get some Columbia vote by delcared it ML Day. Both things are embarrassing to have in the public. Your humility in regards to your service most likely made you a good soldier and a fine person outside of cheering for football, but your refusal to admit anything your favorite team, its fanbase, its coach or students do is wrong means you simply can't see the big picture.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That's why they went but that isn't what happened

Oct 30, 2012, 12:55 PM

If Spurrier asked me if he should say that, I would have told him "No".

However, I don't think it's as big a deal as it has been made out to be. It's about as worthy of talking about as Dabo's speeding ticket.

So no, I don't think what he said was 'wrong' but it's wasn't the best way to go about building up ML.

As far as ML day goes, who cares, last year she declared some day Gamecock Baseball day or something. Means nothing, no one gets the day off. Just a piece of paper to hand the family w/ the Governor's sig on it.

whoa,

"ML is a better person 'off the field' than many military members. Say what you want, I've been there, most people in the military aren't volunteering at children's hospitals in their spare time."

Are you kidding me? I think our uniformed men and women do enough by their service to this country that they don't need to volunteer their time to get proper recognition.

wow...just wow.

Re: never in my life

Oct 30, 2012, 3:30 PM

Yup - i stand by my statement. As a military member, I've hunt out with plenty. Sure everyone is all up on military members - probably the only profession that gets the benefit of the doubt right off the bat.

Kinda goes out the window when someone gets raped by a military person, or a military drug ring is busted, multiple DUIs/year, domestic violence, higher rate of divorce. People in the military are people too. Just because the job is respectable like a fireman or a policeman doesn't mean they are good people when they take the uniform off. ML is a good person ALL THE TIME.

I stand by my statement.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: never in my life

Oct 30, 2012, 3:46 PM

a few "bad apples" doesn't condemn the entire profession.

Your argument and lack of support of the military leads me to belive your time serving was unpleasant.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: never in my life

Oct 30, 2012, 4:05 PM

My time serving was just fine, I would do it again. I used to tell my friends parents (when I was back home on leave and such)

There are two perceptions of the Marines (what I was/am): there is a man standing at attention in dress blues that helps old ladies cross the street.

Then there are the Marines out at bars at 4AM looking for fights.

I'm not condeming the entire profession, I'm saying on average, the average military person isn't as good "off the field" as ML. I'm sure there are military personnel that dedicate more of the free time to charitable or religious activities, I'm speaking in generalities and averages.

in order to dwarf other people. Not everyone can be a soldier and its a good thing everyone isn't otherwise there would be to much of a militant mindset. I don't see how the military is related to Lattimore at all. It just implies that you can't truly be a good person unless you serve in the military which of course isn't true.
