Need the brain trust re 3rd row SUVs

Due to… recent developments… my timeline for upgrading my wife’s car & what I’m looking for have changed. I have a sedan and my wife is in a 2013 Civic that I’ll be trading in. I also have a 2004 suburban that’s sort of like my farm truck, but also a good start for moving a big family around, but it’s too big and not new enough for hot suburban soccer mom of 3.
I’m looking to get her in something she won’t destroy in the Target parking lot or Starbucks line, but big enough to comfortably fit a car seat and two boosters, and I figure that either means it needs to be quite wide, or have a third row. Also needs to fit in the garage.
Not going to buy new, I’m only ever going to buy couple year old CPO vehicles, I’m too cheap to pay the new car premium. Will be looking at GLE, GLS, XC90, maybe GX? What other makes should I consider? Don’t really know anything about genesis, BMW, higher end Kia’s like the telluride, etc.
Happy new year boys.

Who are in your situation- about 3 families I know of - all have Odysseys and swear by them.
Honda is usually a safe bet for a used car and when the kids trash it, it’s just a Honda vs the Lexus, Volvo, infinity etc.

I had no problem owning a minivan when the time was right for a minivan. I had an Isuzu Oasis (sister vehicle to the Honda Odyssey) when Joonyer was a youngster and it worked out perfectly. Good gas mileage, plenty of room, comfy, plenty of power for highway trips...no complaints at all. Traded it in at 246k and I think it was in the shop one time for a minor repair in the years I owned it. They're purpose-built and they do exactly what is needed. It's silly to me to stake your manhood on the kind of vehicle you drive to begin with. It's a tool like any other, and you get the right tool for the right job. Simple as that.

I do not like the way Honda seats are formed, but the Sienna or Odyssey are usually top notch.
I cannot emphasize enough, we got the van 3-4 years into having two kids and not getting it sooner made the top 10 regrets of my life. Now, with 3 kids... i could not imagine not having it... nightmares. I eill have a minivan as long is two kids are living in my house... maybe longer.

Sliding doors in parking lots are money when kids be piling out with no concern for the vehicle parked next to you.
We have a Pacifica. Got a one year old lease return, driven by an elderly couple, and was loaded. Captain chairs as the middle row, so twins sit in those in the car seats and lilmissgrouching can get in and out of the back row with ease. If I need to haul off stuff, all the seats fold down and I’ve got more space than a truck bed. And it is a nice ride for road trips. Big fan.

It seems the parking spots in a lot of places have shrunk. Even worse if you have to park in a deck...which happens more than I'd like when attending concerts out of town. Oddly enough, Walmarts all still have fairly larger spaces that minimize door dings.

Despite the size of the spaces, you can park in the furthest empty corner of a Walmart parking lot and still come out after shopping and find a primer gray 1987 Chevy Beretta 2 inches from your driver’s door?

My wife easily hauls the 3 grandsons in their NASCAR approved car seats in the second row.
It drives smoothly and has an excellent maintenance record and is safe.
It does get a bit thirsty at the gas pump.

Sienna to be precise.
They’ve been all hybrid for the past few years and believe me, you do NOT want to be stooping over to strap kids in seats. AND you will need the extra cargo room a minivan affords.
This is no time for pride or looks.

But the suggestions in this thread aren’t bad. Get a loaded Odyssey or Sienna and keep it until all three kids are in boosters and can climb in the car and buckle themselves in.
Unless you are a contortionist it is a pain to put a kid in and out of the average SUV third row seat day in and day out. The rear facing seat you have to have for a year now takes up more space in a car than anything on the planet, and the kids will be destroying each other three across in the middle seat.
If you have to have an SUV, the GLS and X7 are the biggest of the Germans. Forget the GX and look at an LX or a late model Land Cruiser (side note, the LX and Land Cruiser will hold their values insanely well). Telluride gets a lot of love too but isn’t huge in the back.

I just looked for a while at Tellurides w the highest trim package w middle row captains chairs. The 8 yo can easily hop in the back of that. They actually look pretty #### nice.

Check out the Nissan Armada or the Infiniti version of it. Lot of bang for the buck there. Probably the only Nissan product I’d buy—it’s based on the Patrol (their landcruiser competitor) so it’s built to a higher standard than most of their lineup

That's what I'm getting as soon as I find it. That said, the question was regarding three car seats/boosters, so I stand by the minivan statement. The third row of an Armada isn't roomy and still makes dealing with a kid seat a pain I'd think.

I’d love to buy a new Tahoe or Yukon, I just don’t know if I trust my wife w something that big & already have an old suburban. Plus like 90k got dayum. I’d get myself a new Yukon AT4 if I were truck shopping.

Ive been looking at 3rd row SUVs for similar reasons.

I have driven the Honda pilot and it was a solid ride. The one I drove was a little older, maybe 2018 or so.
I am most interested in the Toyota grand Highlander. Toyota seems to hold their value really well and I mostly want reliability. The grand Highlander looks like it has plenty of room in the third seat, which is the normal Highlander and the pilot are fairly weak on.
The telluride and palisade get rave reviews but it seems like they’re selling point is that you get all the bells and whistles at a similar price point for a base model Honda or Toyota of similar size. I really don’t care about all of the amenities. I just want a solid car.
I will be interested to see what you find on new versus used. From the searches I’ve done so far any low mileage, used vehicle is going to be pretty near the price of a new one. I have always sworn that I would never buy a new car, but the current market has me reconsidering that.
My wife straight up refuses to drive a minivan. I was also Planning to run this question by the lounge so I’m glad you did it first

Definitely bring a car seat with you if testing that one. I like the designs of Volvo, but the driving experience of X7 so much more fun (though smaller 3rd row).
We only have two kids, and wife drives Highlander with half of third row often up. A kid can easily sit in back when other kid brings friends along. Still enough space behind 3rd row (but again, bring stroller with you).
Wife has banged up the Highlander plenty in parking lots. Couldn’t imagine damage if she had a bigger vehicle.

We had a 2011 Odyssey for years and replaced it in 2020 with a 21 Odyssey Touring.
The new Kia looks nice but no real experience. Sienna was our 2nd choice. It drives much larger than it is and the wife didn’t care for that so Odyssey wins.

Classic station wagons are commanding a pretty penny these days. I had a '74 Olds Vista Cruiser wagon for a few years at Clemson. It was a hand-me-down from RH Mom, and ended up being the most borrowed vehicle on campus.

How big is the garage you are parking in?
2
Jan 2, 2024, 7:59 AM

You may need the Telluride because excellent front and 2nd row legroom, plus fold the mirrors in with the push of a button. (There are other models with fold-in mirrors of course).
If your garage door width is only 8 ft, I think you have to have the folding mirrors.
If your garage door width is 9 ft, whatevs.
I am 6-1. When I drive my wife's car (Honda Passport, 2nd row legroom = 39.6 inches) MsJr's feet are a little too close to my seat. It works, but I wouldn't get anything with less than 39 inches in the 2nd row.
Ts and Ps for the kid that gets stuck in the 3rd row unless kid is going to max out at 5-10 or less.

mini-van would be better than what we had.
Had a 4Runner w/o 3rd row then a Pilot w/ 3rd row then a 4Runner w/ 3rd row and a Highlander with 3rd row.
If your kid isn't a moron, they can strap themselves in and you can put the infant in the little carriage thing that their carseat fits in.
Probably upgrade in the next 24 months because the 3rd row isn't practical for long legs but that means we need a Suburban/Tahoe most likely. Or a Sequoia, wife wants that.

TIL that they make 3rd row 4Runners. That's going on the list.

It's "functional." But not super easy to get to.

Unless I haven't really figured out how to work our seats, which is very likely. But with the third row up your cargo space is fuckall.

8 year old is the only one who can be really comfortable back there.
Mostly we ride three wide in the backseat or take the Highlander where the third row is actually roomier and the middle row is captains chairs.

expensive repairs... would not own without warranty.
I had 2 GXs (new) and never had a problem, perfect for the kid toting... the only reason I got rid of and got a Tahoe was because my kids are older and into competitive traveling sports with lots of gear to haul. Cannot pull a horse trailer with a GX.
That said, the Acadia's and Traverses have a pretty good 3 row configuration and I recently saw someone pulling a decent sized horse trailer with it so I did a double take.
Co-worker was looking at the Telluride but ended up getting a new GX.
The infinity QX60 seems to be pretty popular with the people not wanting a minivan but also not wanting a giant full sized SUV.

One other thing...or two

You're gonna save a whole $5,000 maybe by getting a two year old vehicle with 35K miles as opposed to new.
You could probably make $2-3K more by selling the civic yourself instead of trading it (if you don't get shot of course).

I mean maybe things are different now, but I bought a 3yo CPO merc sedan a couple years ago and I bet I paid 60% of what the sucker that rolled it off the lot paid

I'd be very appreciative if you update what you find on this point.

I've always sworn I would never buy a new car for the reasons you state.
However, looking at Honda/Toyota, McLovin seems about right to me. CPO looks to be, max, $5,000 less than new. That may be worth it. $5,000 ain't nothing and I don't know what all CPO gets you.
I could see there being a bigger impact for luxury vehicles but haven't priced those myself.

If you go Land Rover, Jaguar, BMW....sure, it should be way cheaper, right? For good reason...I'm assuming the BMW is sort of in that category.
