The Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style is about $60 and is very good. Baker's is also good, same price range.

Eagle Rare. They distribute a bottle for just under $50 that's hard to beat.
In my opinion, it's as good or better than Blantons', and better than Basil Hayden, Baker's, and Knob Creek.

all of these are pretty smooth and very drinkable uncut.
However, if you are going to mix it with water, coke, or ginger, it doesn't matter as much.

For the dollar, I've said for years Makers 46 is best thing out there.
Blanton's is a very close second if a) you can find it and b) it's less than $90.

If you can find Blanton's, it would be a good choice (although, might be a bit pricier than $50). Really, I'd recommend anything from Buffalo Trace:
Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Blanton's

When in stock, Total Wine in Greenville has had 750ml Blanton's for about $65. Last I looked, it was not in stock.

You have pretty much gotten different suggestions from almost all of the posters. Several have mentioned anything from the Buffalo Trace distillery or simply named a bourbon from Buffalo Trace. I am going to agree with those suggestions. Anything from there is smooth and very "drinkable" uncut.
First, anything with Weller on the label if you can find it, followed by Blantons and Eagle Rare 10 year. Of course Buffalo Trace Bourbon is a stand by and only $24.99.All of these can be either hard to find or spotty, but well worth looking for. Buffalo Trace is the most available and around Columbia is available about 1/3rd to 1/2 of the time.
If he is going to mix it, it doesn't really matter.

Agree with anything from Buffalo Trace but would throw in a few other ideas:
Nice bourbon drink recipe book - Anything to keep him from mixing a good bourbon with Coke
Bar set (shaker, strainer, stirrer, etc)
Would also recommend Basil Heyden. Very nice straight up.

One of my favorites in this range I haven’t seen mentioned yet is Angel’s Envy.
But there are a lot of good suggestions here and it’s hard to go wrong especially when you start approaching this price point. The absolute shame with Weller, Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, etc is they are so overpriced in SC. I’ve bought 1.75l bottles of Weller and BT in other states for less than the price of a 750ml here. I just spent $50 on an Eagle Rare last weekend that I’ve paid less than half that elsewhere. Despite that, I still part with my money when I see them.

Many good suggestions here. Have tried most and liked most though some I keep going back to. I would also recommend Basil Hayden for the price but Blade & Bow in same $ range also very smooth and a little sweeter

I’ll echo a few and say Makers 46. I love Blanton’s but it has gotten ridiculous. Visit an old Marine buddy of mine up by Lexington a couple times a year and can’t even find it there ??. I e found it in Florence but my wallet refused to open.
