Need help! Myrtle Beach Crabbing!

May 8, 2019, 11:44 AM

I'll be visiting the MB area the week of 5/20/19. Can anyone give me any advice on where to crab from a dock/pier with an open-top trap? I want to take my kids crabbing, but they aren't really old enough to handle a trot line crabbing. Obviously, I'm looking for safe, legal places.

Is the Marsh Walk in Murrells Inlet a good place? What about Moarse Park Landing? I hear Cherry Grove Landing is a good spot, but how is parking?

Also, high tide or low tide???

Thanks for any help you can offer! I'm looking forward to, hopefully, creating a new tradition with my kids!

badge-donor-15yr.jpg2012_pickem_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you can probably go down to pawleys or lichfield

May 8, 2019, 11:54 AM

And find a decent spot.

I see people fishing near the bridge going into lichfield a lot. Maybe some good crabbing at low tide.

You’re looking for crabs in myrtle beach?

You’re in luck.... just find the local women.

I believe a salt water fishing license is required for adults, so check with the DNR web site to make sure. Big brother might be watching.

I'm a GA resident, but I've already purchased my 14 day

May 8, 2019, 12:05 PM

saltwater license!

Thanks for that tip though. I would hate to have messed that up and gotten a fine.

No licence needed as long as you have fewer than 3 traps per person. We like to crab off of the dock in garden city next to sara J's. There is a group on facebook called 843 We Love Blue Crabs Myrtle Beach SC. It has some helpful tips. We have only gone to marshwalk once and didn't have much luck.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, I got the license anyway! Figured I would be safe and

May 8, 2019, 12:24 PM

it provides something for the SCDNR's budget, which is good by me.

I think you guys have convinced me that this is the spot!

I can't tell you all how much I appreciate it! My 6 year old is SOOOOOOOOO excited.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg2012_pickem_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yup I didn't even think of that. garden city's bridge is

May 8, 2019, 1:40 PM

Much longer and you'll have a lot more room. I think you should try that out first.

The dock or walkway across the creek at Garden City bridge is a good spot.

you are correct.***

Try Vereen Memorial Garden park around 4pm.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thank you! Just looked it up. Looks like a great place!

May 8, 2019, 12:09 PM

I'm trying to maximize the success of this outing as my 6 year old is REALLY excited about catching them.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg2012_pickem_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

options are going to be limited but...

May 8, 2019, 12:17 PM

if you leave Myrtle Beach and go to Atlantic Ave in Garden City there is a nice dock/boardwalk you can crab off of. You can park in the lot across from Sara J's restaurant. Should be a great area for kids.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Awesome! Thank you!

May 8, 2019, 12:22 PM

I have no problem leaving the MB area. We are already planning a half day at Brookgreen Gardens, so we will be down that way anyway!

it is where I go and I can vouch for it. good spot and there are a few bait shops a little further down, past the seawatch inn. its a little strip of shops. also the pier is just down the rode as well

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What do you recommend for bait? Mullet? Turkey necks?***

Turkey necks are fine, let em sit out over nice and get a real nice smell

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

to be honest

May 8, 2019, 1:45 PM [ in reply to What do you recommend for bait? Mullet? Turkey necks?*** ]

turkey necks, like moody said are fine, but crabs are scavengers and will eat just about anything. I've used necks, fish heads, all kinds of stuff. basically anything that has a strong smell.

chicken necks work great and the grocery stores used to have small containers of them just for crabbing. I've also used plain chicken skin, works fine. Smelly is best.

Go to Murrells Inlet or Pawleys/litchfield in the south area.
Crab are in creeks. No creeks really in myrtle beach.

Re: Need help! Myrtle Beach Crabbing!

There is or was a creek in MB about 3rd Avenue South we used to call the "Swash". Did a lot of crabbing there but at the risk of aging myself, that has been over a 50 years ago. Don't know the status of that creek now but more than likely it is rather polluted. Speaking of crabs, women, etc. in Myrtle Beach, never had a problem. However, I did catch a crab in the BR at Belmont Abbey College while attending a CPA review course. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

When my kids were little

May 8, 2019, 1:39 PM

We would get Turkey necks and tie it to a piece of string 10-15 ft long. Drag it slowly across the bottom, they will grab on and right before they get to the top scoop them with a net. We had a place at the beach and did that so many times I lost count. When they got older we just used traps.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm pretty sure they are still teaching kids this method at

May 8, 2019, 1:42 PM

Barrier island. At least I hope they are, I remember that from 5th grade field trip.

This. It’ll keep them busy and is just as effective.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mine are 6 and 2. I'm just afraid their lack of "touch"

May 8, 2019, 1:47 PM [ in reply to When my kids were little ]

isnt going to allow for many to be caught this way. The 6 year old could probably do it. I bought an open-top trap from a company in Chesapeake Bay, MD that looks like it might do the trick. I might also try the line though!

badge-donor-15yr.jpg2012_pickem_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

nah, the crabs won't let go

May 8, 2019, 2:08 PM

until they are at the water level or they see the net. You just have to help your kids. I assure you a 6 yr old can do it.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Excellent! I am going to try it then!

Go to Ocean Isle area and use bacon as bait just cut a few slits in package you will catch tons of blue crabs

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One question ... how did crabs develop a taste for chicken ?

May 8, 2019, 1:47 PM

Seems odd they would have crossed paths.
