screwup by the UNC coach.
The go ahead fast UNC runner is on 1st, batter hits a long sacrifice fly and runner tags up and makes it to second with 1 out. Umpire gets involved and apparently there was a “substitution error” by the UNC coach and the batter is out and the runner had to return to 1st base. Next batter hits into a double play to end the inning and the threat.
So, in a nutshell, what exactly was the “substitution error” rule - and, who called it - umpire or Clemson coach?
Really was a potential game changer late in a close 1-1 game.
I looked at the NCAA 5-5 Substitutions rules and it’s about as clear as mud to me.
Thanks, and,
Go Tigers!

Good question. Watching it live, I didn't get the feeling Clemson caught it (unless it was completely challenged from the dugout without Rittman coming up on the field). Also noticed there seemed to be no push back from the Heels coach (other than apparently comparing rosters or something like that with the ump), so it must've been cut and dried.

Me too ...... wondered why there was not a more lively discussion between the UNC coach and ump. She must have clearly knew she was wrong, but after 38 years of coaching she should have known better.

did she just put the batter in the wrong order for who she substituted? Im guessing maybe they switched 2 players and she made a mistake?

Either wrong order or simply didn't tell umpire

they either didn't inform the umpire of the substitution, the substitution occurred before the ball was dead, or the player who entered the game to run had already been in the lineup/batting order.

At any rate that’s a huge mistake for a coach that’s been

There 30+ years to make at the most critical time in an ACC tournament game. Just imagine if Hubert Davis made a mistake like that during the ACC basketball tournament. They’d run him out of town on a rail.

Yea there are a few things I do not understand about the game.
Trying to get into the Canes (hockey) and having to learn those rules on the fly.
Any soccer questions I am your guy!

I honestly thought it looked like the UNC coach was helping the ump balance his checkbook they were talking for so long. He had a pretty wide device to spread the lineup card on.

I was getting confused with the pinch runner, pinch hitter, and then a Doberman pincher. It was weird for sure.

No run scored. Couldn't be a sac fly.
