Waste of money? I believe the spring game brings in a more then a few dollars for the downtown businesses.

My theory is that schools that cancel spring games dont want

To have to roll out a pecking order to their own teams, thus affecting their depth.
Some players might be thinking oh I’m gonna start next year only to have a portal or freshman pass them on the depth chart at the spring game.
By eliminating the spring game you delay that supposition by those players in hopes they stick around, preserving your depth.
