along and was able to beat Dale Earnhardt. Earnhardt was dominating the sport far too much for my liking at the time. However, Jeff Gordon was also the beginning of the end for Nascar. They went out of their way trying to establish a much broader appeal, mostly on the back of Jeff, and got away from their core fanbase, which, like it or not, was Southern Rednecks.
They took all the "fightin' and fun" out of the sport, not to mention the grossest cheatin'. (But make no mistake, Chad Knaus of Jimmie Johnson fame was one of the most well organized cheaters of all TIME!) But, the biggest reason EYE think Nascar has fallen on hard times is that the cars are not really stock cars anymore. Remember, NASCAR stands for NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of STOCK CAR AUTO RACING. When the cars were actually cars, there was some truth to the adage "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday" for the automobile manufacturers.
Now, not only is there no resemblance between these racing vehicles and any car on the street, there is, on purpose, no DIFFERENCES between any of the racers, other than decals and the engines. The bodies are mandated to be alike, even to the point of failing inspection if they are a few thousandths off a template in certain areas. Even the engines, although they may differ by manufacturer, are forced to be virtual duplicates in performance, and only preapproved parts may be used, ANYWHERE on ANY car.
It has all just gotten too sanitized to still be what it started out being, which was a bunch of moonshiners showing off their driving and car building skills at the racetrack. It will never get that back, so, it has to come up with another "hook", if you will. The sport really needs what it had in Dale Earnhardt right now, a dominant, take no prisoners superstar. But, the forced equality in the cars has almost assured that kind of domination will never happen again.

I haven’t watched since Dale died. I have tried but found the product lacking. Rule changes are weird and the “playoffs” are kinda participation trophy based. Every team cheats. The only way to keep it from happening is for the circuit to provide the cars. See the IROC series. I turned the 500 on yesterday and managed to watch two laps before changing the channel. I used to go to four races a year and had some expensive collectible die cast cars I sold at auction a few years ago. That Dale Earnhardt Bass Pro Shops 1:18th scale paid for a nice vacation!

I agree. At one point Tony Stewart was advocating for a real, back to roots, stock car league. NASCAR was much better back in the day, imo. Darlington used to give free backstretch tickets to the Boy Scouts, which our troop gladly attended every year. I took my sons to the Atl race where we could get reasonably priced tickets on the backstretch. Their choosing not to fix the stands after the tornado damage (in the name of $) ruined that for a lot of fans (the backstretch sections were mostly filled while the moderately priced stands on the ends of the track were not). NASCAR today is more like the now defunct IROC league.

NASCAR's greed led it to turning its back on its core audience. A very similar thing is now taking place in College Football.
