The people in favor of staying closed are still getting paid ... for essentially doing nothing
My plant has stayed open the entire time. The front office people are “working from home”. Those of us in the back come into work everyday. From what I see the “work from homers” are essentially on a extended paid vacation. They don’t even bother logging in anymore. I can see who has been logged in through Skype
If the money was to disappear they would run back to the plant to work
Working from home is a big joke but no one is calling it out for what it is

from home and I assure you I haven't been on any 'extended vacation'. It may be a joke where you are, but that's minuscule sample size. I have a giant sample size, and it's just like being in the office with the inconvenience of not having the necessary office machines, so my industry has had to adapt.
I'm fully in favor of everything getting back to normal ASAFP. This 'new normal', 'everything has changed forever', perpetual spread of fear and tyranny nonsense makes me nauseous and angry. It's a bump in the road, not the apocalypse. We're being manipulated by politicians and other 'powerful' people with agendas. Anyone who doesn't see that isn't paying attention.

Yeah its easy to be a shutdown advocate when you're getting fully paid to do little or nothing. Not to mention the invisible army of "essential" workers who make life pretty pleasant for the few ivory tower types who pass judgment on the rest of us from their couch. Just imagine if police, firemen, health care workers, trash collectors, power/cable/internet providers, grocery store workers and a host of others suddenly stopped going to work every day. Those fully paid couch dwellers comfy existence would suddenly look a lot different and I bet they'd be singing a different tune. Let them eat cake seems to be their current philosophy however.

Working from home now is a 12-14+ hour work day, 7 days a week for me now. And I have a toddler and a 5 year old on top of that. I never did more work outside the ivory tower (seriously, working in academia (grant writer/researcher) was the worst schedule... and I even burnt out), but this is darn close. My hours *would* be up but I am salary and target reporting dependent so this is by far not a vacation. I don't work, I don't eat. Worse, I was my time with X zoom meeting, y zoom meeting that I waste 2-3 hours just listening in while trying to get something else out the door.
I used to work in a LE office. Of the 14+ full-time officers plus others, only about 4 ever did any real work on a daily basis and they worked 80 hours a week because of the others. Part of what I did was actually track vehicle activity via telematics so I knew exactly when they took naps in various parking lots. My favorite was having to assist with an unlock for a public meeting only to have had the officer inside the room accessing the projector for personal media. Nothing like hearing the radio calling someone to open a unused public meeting room from inside the public meeting room. Granted, I support our LE because I know how hard those other four folks worked. I was often an uncredited "author" for a lot of reporting work. However, gold-brickers exist everywhere.

A lot of people have been need of the help. A lot of people have skammed the system. I’ve seen both.

I average over 2 million dollars a year in selling IT support and equipment. I work over 50+ hours a week because in sales you get back what you put in. Working from home takes discipline but I wouldn't trade it for any office job. Now I'm close to retirement and I will continue to work from home until they either fire me or I waive the white flag and retire.

I have worked in and around manufacturing my whole career. In every part of a plant as well. Unless your plant is a vending machine, there is a TON OF WORK that has to happen to keep that plant running.
Right now we sure appreciate those going in to a factory and working during this time, but don't take it that you're the only people struggling. My company is furloughing all salary employees and that is now affecting order throughput and causing the plants to slow down and release employees. This is what happens when all the couch potatoes quit taking orders, ordering materials, responding to customers, sending invoices, paying bills and on and on and on...

Like Tardog said a lot of people are scamming the system. Why is it that the politicians have set it up where many get paid more to sit at home than they would be working? The bigger question that people should be asking is where are we getting this money? Where does it ultimately come from and what are the consequences of printing more money? When did flattening the curve turn into finding a cure? Why didn’t our politicians a few weeks into the shutdown with more information on the virus come up with a common sense approach that kept the most vulnerable at home while the rest of us run the economy so that we can mostly avoid the social economic consequences to what many of them want to continue doing? Yes a small percentage of perfectly healthy people could die from the virus BUT is keeping the economy shut down worth saving a few young healthy people from dying from the virus? What if the social economic fallout will cost far more young and healthy lives than the virus would? What if the social economic fallout screws things up for future generations? What if the greatest generation would have taken the same type of approach during WW2 just because some young and healthy people were going to die? There are times when sacrifices are made for the greater good. Keeping the economy shut down for this virus is insanity. I say that both as a person who has been fortunate enough to continue to work every day while the majority of my coworkers have not and as someone who has been in a war. People in this country need to grow a pair and fight this thing while protecting the most vulnerable.

...for essentially doing nothing? Come on man...minesweeper ain’t gonna play itself. Seriously, I’ve been a teleworker most of my career and have been fortunate enough to keep my job. Business as usual for me...but I agree it is easier for me to push stay at home when I can still pay the mortgage.

BINGO!

Been working the whole time as we were deemed essential , because about 1% of our product goes to the military. They basically gamed the system while small business owners were ruined.
This whole whole thing has been such a sh#t show that I would hope at some point in the future, it will be studied on how not to overreact to the flu. What this has done to the economy and will do to the economy in the future should be a jailable offense. And to think you've got governor's who want to add to damage already done by staying shutdown. It's why liberals and a lot of middle ground Republicans should always have to leave the room when an important decision is made.

There’s plenty of things that could/should have been handled differently and there are hidden/obvious agendas at play all around. But to compare this to the flu is misguided and irresponsible. It’s already killed more people than the seasonal flu in half the time...and that’s been while we were social distancing and under lockdown.

Of a boneheaded perspective. People who think this is just like the flu and that we overreacted have no clue what they are talking about. It is really a testament to someone’s intelligence when I hear stuff like that.

See, that's the great thing about this, I think your just as ignorant and gullible as any I've come across because of your line of thinking. And the thing is, at least the many many folks I come across during a week, agree with my perspective as opposed to yours. So whose to say your not an idiot.
If your going to sit there and say the coronavirus death #'s that have been reported are correct, then nothing else we have to talk about are we going to agree on

My son-in-law is in a technology position and says his department has shown a decided and measurable increase in productivity during the work from home. No standing around the water cooler for a chat nor extended lunch and coffee breaks. Just login and accomplish!

I was talking to the Mrs this morning after we watched the news and this poll came up (forget what channel).
I said something along the lines of:
I wonder how many of those people demanding longer lockdowns would feel if things were *really* locked down. Being able to run to the grocery store or Wal-Mart or picking up your favorite take-out…those are all ways and places where you can infect other or be infected.
So I mean *really locked down*: no grocery stores, no Wal-Mart, no fast-food drive throughs, no pizza delivery, no Uber-Eats or Door-Dash or whatever. No Amazon or Target online. No home delivery. No jogging, visiting a park, etc. You’ll stay in your house or else–we’ll allow you to wander around in your own backyard (backyard only), if you have one. For food, what you’ll get is a government truck will deliver a box of food for one person to eat for a week, and drop off the boxes at your front doorstep based on the number of people in your household (hope you didn’t lie on the census form!). An armed escort will accompany the delivery person to ensure that no one opens their doors while the delivery person is within 20 feet of the door.
The ONLY “essential” personnel will be those involved with treating COVID and for delivering the food. These people will be issued uniforms and ID lanyards. So there’s no reason for anyone one else to ever venture outside of their house and anyone on the streets who is not in uniform obviously has no business being there, and will be subject to immediate detention in physical quarantine facilities.
Let them imagine a real lockdown for a few minutes then ask the question about keeping things closed until there's vaccine again. Bet the answer is different.

I have to say I agree with you on much of that. I too have been going to work as normal and have not missed a day. For the life of me, I cant see how anyone would be for keeping businesses closed. Its nonsensical in every way. But that's just my opinion.

Many jobs don't require much work.
Other jobs are bursty and have a lot of work for short periods of time but generally not much.
Some jobs only have measurables when something goes wrong, and if nothing typically goes wrong, then you can't differentiate someone doing their job from not doing anything.
Your management needs to re-evaluate their staff if they have people "working from home' doing nothing and it hasn't made a difference.

Before my wife retired, she worked her last 4 years from home as a manager with Aetna insurance. She was first promoted to supervisor after about 3 year with Aetna, and she says that she had to work pretty hard as a supervisor, but after she was promoted to manager at 10 years with Aetna, she says that the job was much easier as manager bc she had some good supervisors working with her. She swears that when she started working from home as a manager, those were the 4 hardest years she had to work of the 20 years she worked at Aetna. And she believes that was bc she wasn't in the office observing what the supervisors were actually doing with all their time that they were actually logged in bc the supervisors would have to at times go to another employees desk to help them through situations that incurred. She swears that if she hadn't been so close to retirement when she had enough of the in home thing, that she would have went back in the office bc working at home allowed a lot of unsettled cases to get thrown in her lap, and there were many days she didn't have time to take more that a quick restroom break. Really good employees will do their job where ever you put them bc that is just the way they are!!!
