College Football is being destroyed right in front of us

Dec 13, 2022, 12:20 AM

Concerning the portal/NIL, #WSU HC Jake Dickert says "there's more tampering going on than you could ever imagine.
"We've had guys contact our players' parents. We had a coach from another school contact one of our players and offer him NIL.
"It's stunning. ... It's not right."

Yep, and colleges should end all sports at the college level bc they no longer have any control over anything concerning the athletic part of college level sports. Let the pros build and support lower level sports as farm teams. Then wait and see how good the teams will be then, it won't be as good as it was before the schools had their power taken away. College sports has been ruined by the rich wanting to use it for expanding their riches!!! Tear down the arenas and stadium and say get the H&11 out!!!

Why would colleges want to throw away 100's of millions of dollars? They are still making a fortune.

Not really. The profit margin is slim. They may be making a lot but are also spending a lot. It won’t be long before colleges start operating in the red with how much they spend on resources, coaches and NIL

Virtually all of that money is spent. Look at that new multimillion $ athletic complex we just announced. Rowing doesn’t produce that. That’s football money. Same for nearly every other sport.

The whole premise became skewed when we started recruiting folks who had no desire to become student athletes...the were always athletes but never students...we just want to be the 1/2 of 1% that make it to the NFL...just care about the money and colleges just care about winning and wealthy alumni want to be associated with a winner,,,so here we are...college football started off as `club football` representing a university and look at it now...we`ve even Bashardized academics so those who should not even be there can prosper...and now cash right out front...the governing body of college sports had no real stomach for governance so the dropped their drawers after punishing SMU, Clemson and very few others...the big dogs went merrily on their way...Dabo tried to fix that way!

Even the pros don't allow for poaching of current players. Perhaps there should be some sort of contract between players and universities.

Billy Packer has the first step in the solution.

Dec 13, 2022, 3:39 AM

Coaches need to quit giving incidents without naming names. They need to name names.

"These five athletes (give their names) had representatives from collectives at other schools (name the collectives) and offer different amounts (give the amounts) to these players.

"Heck, coach Joe Bigtimer (give his real name) contacted Quinton Quarterback (give his real name) and offer him an NIL deal (give the specific amount)."

Coaches are a fraternity. Anonymous complaints protect the tamperers. If coaches want to stop it, they have to start by having the guts to name names and schools and dollar amounts.

That won't solve the problem by itself, but it is the first step down the road.

I've made no secret of my detest and disgust with both

Dec 13, 2022, 4:57 AM

the new portal and NIL, both products of failures of leadership within the NCAA.

Want to see immediate action on both? Let the P5's, including Commissioners, AD's, HC's, have the guts to announce that as of a certain date, they will no longer participate in national title games nor conference championships nor bowl games nor national polls; i.e. the way of the Ivies. They will play their 12 games, and that's it.

Guaranteed two things will happen: fans along with networks will rise into collective outrage to force resolution. The NCAA, if it continues to exist, will have to grow gnarly teeth and realize the gross failure of its current portal rules. Secondly, they will have to get highly inventive, regardling the NIL in a manner to pass muster in court. Tampering has to be outlawed with fangs: investigation, conviction and severe penalties: no conference titles, no bowl games, hefty reduction in scholarships, beginning with a minimum five year penalty, increased to ten years on a second conviction and the death penalty upon the third. To wit: violate, and we will kick your asssss!

If we know anything about our government, we know its propensity to involve itself in issues affecting its members. Our Congress is full of graduates and fans of colleges and universities across this nation. Hence, let this imbroglio continue, and you can bank on Congressional meddling...something we do not need. That is precisely why the schools have to force the NCAA to action.

While we're engaging in fantasies, whatever happened to

Dec 13, 2022, 7:05 AM

the idea that college football players were to be actual students, exactly like all other students, with the same exact entrance requirements, and the same academic requirements all the way through, going to class, writing papers and essays, doing homework and projects, passing tests and making grades. I would love Clemson football, and college football in general, if the players were real, regular students first and foremost, who happened to be good athletes. I know that is the case, in part at least, for some football players, who take advantage of the oppportunity, but for many, it simply is not (and has never been, it's just gotten progressively worse). That would take care of the NIL and the portal. Instead, big time college football's main purpose is to provide entertainment for the masses, and serve as a minor league for the NFL, and those two things drive it entirely. Until we can have an honest discussion about that, and address it, it is only going to get worse, and get worse fast.

That's it exactly. We've got a very weird system in America that just sort of "growed", and now it's grown in weird ways where the model is just incredibly broken. It's Wild West out there right now.

We need to sort it out, and fast...and apply some logic and reason to it, and above all else, keep our main focus on the well-being and betterment of the young men in question, who are being shopped around like commodities right now with little to no thought for how it might be affecting them.

I agree 100% that this is the way it should be. BUT, as long as there is money to be made, then we get what we have now. I like your Ivy League example. Would anyone pay to watch it? No, but that is kind of the point. With no great entertainment value there is no market for turning a profit on anything close to a mass scale.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: While we're engaging in fantasies, whatever happened to

Dec 13, 2022, 7:56 AM

This is where I think the perception is very wrong. College fans and graduates, who love their school, would watch the game regardless of the the talent level on the field. For those not watching for gambling or an entertainment industry job, most fans who watch college football do so because they have a connection with a certain team. I have long said I would be willing to let the top 10% of college athelets go if it meant we didn't have to deal with all the lawyers. The NFLs age restrictions and lack of a farm system created this problem and I still do not understand why the NCAA hasn't pushed back.

Exactly. Sure, the audience would be smaller, but still

Dec 13, 2022, 10:58 AM

huge. When I was a kid in the 1960s, and Clemson and Coot U were in the ACC with it's tough academic requirements, all kids and their families had strong allegiences to a college team, and we were starved for college football on TV. We watched Oklahoma/Nebraska, Ohio St/Michigan, we didn't care. I understand that the world is very different now, but there would still be a huge audience for college football if some kind of honesty and ethics were restored. I just don't think a single soul has the guts and wherewithall, much less the motivation, to do the right thing and fight that battle.

I've got a kid at Princeton now so I have been following the Ivy League for the last few years. For football, they do have conference championships and are ranked in the FCS coaches Top 25, but that's pretty much it. They don't participate in the FCS playoffs I suspect because of the proximity to exams. It's interesting watching the fan/student interest in the games...Princeton tragically threw away the 2022 conference championship in nail-baiting games in its last two contests and there was some grief for like all of a weekend and then folks moved on. The students and fans have more important stuff to worry about. BTW, listen to the interviews of any of the kids playing on an Ivy football team and the vast majority of them will impress you, they are smart and true student athletes.

NIL is not going away as the Supreme Court unanimously decided that, not the NCAA.

Nor is the transfer portal - you can't restrain individuals from making the decision to move to another school.

But if you think any of this is new... geez, read former Clemson basketball coach Tates Locke's book Caught in the Net if you want to read about people handing out bags of money to student athletes. IIRC (as I read this probably thirty years ago) we had an assistant whose job was basically to live in a hotel and follow around Moses Malone.

For decades - donors have been dying to find ways to "help" get their team the best players. Now that chance has been handed to them on a silver (no wait, platinum) platter.

IF the NCAA grows teeth - the next lawsuit will be: "Why shouldn't Johnny be able to play where he'll get the most money?"

NCAA knew change was coming. They had every chance to salvage the sport but they were lazy and thought Congress would back them once again. When NCAA's was to buy more time through Congress with zero Plan B or C, they basically gave up the control of schools.

The NCAA is a glorified scheduling service now to manage tournaments, bowls and an administrator of conference arbitration. They have zero say in the college athletics.

I would love to see D1 to fall into either NIL players(semi-pro) or 100% student athletes. I would be fine with Clemson to go with Student-Athletes and play in a highly regulated conference. Let the crazies deal with the Wild West NIL. I don't want to be worried about players constantly being bought or going to free agency in the NIL world.
