New Story: Next stop for Swinney and the Tigers? Winning the elusive national title

Next stop for Swinney and the Tigers? Winning the elusive national title

The next step is a National Championship. When Terry Don Phillips took the interim tag off of Dabo Swinney’s job title and made Swinney the head coach at the end of the 2008 season, Swinney had a particular first goal in mind: win the division. Once that hurdle was reached and conquered, the rest of his goals would start to fall into place. Full Story »

FINISH!!

Jan 2, 2017, 8:19 AM

This time, we are going to finish. And, I would not be surprised if we win 3 or 4 more over the next 5 years. With the talent that is coming in, it can happen. We are the "new" Alabama. Gotta beat them first but once that is done, it is all downhill. Love the free adversity that Chris and Kirk have is the other night. You have to know our recruits heard that.

A view from the other side

Jan 2, 2017, 8:49 AM

As an Alabama fan, I'm very worried about this game. Bama's O has been suspect all year, and Clemson's a lot looser and better since the Pitt loss. Our D is a lights-out unit, but we don't have depth and get beaten on the deep throw at least twice in every game.
Then there's the unfinished business factor.I don't believe in Karma (neither does Saban) but this just feels like a game that will complete Clemson's ascendancy. CU in 2016 looks and feels a lot like UA in 2009. Not respected, beating a team that it lost to the year before...
On the other hand, if Hurts can make the big plays and Kiffin wakes up and has a better plan than he did for Washington.... Plus we don't take any team for granted and aren't complacent by any means.
Should be a great match up.

There are still a lot of folks that don't believe in our team, and there are a lot of our own fans that don't believe. But that group of young men that wear that Clemson uniform, they believe in them selves, and Bama will have to play one of their best games to stop those guys that put that Paw on their heads and run out on that field. I know that it's not impossible bc I've seen us win it all before!!!

100% agree with you, that's why I'm concerned. I still don't understand the "no respect" thing at Clemson, but Dabo has mined it very well. Alabama probably gets too much respect, as I'm not sure (other than D) we're really on another level this year. At the same time, we get everyone's best shot every week, with several teams taking a bye week just before they play us.
If Jalen can connect downfield enough to loosen your D, if our O line can block better than last year, if our DB's can mix in a little zone... I'm sure you're got your list of "if's" as well

I love the classy view from the other side. Thank you for sharing with us. As for the respect thing, just look at the Ohio St game. No one expected us to beat them even though we are ranked higher. Every single week on ESPN, we are on "upset watch" no matter who we are playing. Even now the SEC homer Finebaum all but hand delivered the trophy to Tuscaloosa already. No one is giving us s chance in this game. Just like the ND game, LSU, OSU (twice), Oklahoma (twice)...we just don't get that respect from the "experts" and pundits. Other coaches and teams we play respect us, but we can't get over that jump with the "experts". It's like we are the team they love to hate. But, most of us actually LIKE it like that. It puts a chip in our shoulder. It puts a chip in the teams shoulder and they go out and prove them wrong 99% of the time.

Anyway, Bamasurfer, thanks for your post. Here is to another instant classic game. No disrespect to you or Bama, but it sure will be nice if we can leave Tampa as National Champions by beating the best team in College Football! Good luck to your Tide.

After all those experts have told us so many times that we can't do it, and we have done it after all they have said, it do seem to me that anybody that wears our Orange Paw wouldn't ever believe another word the experts say. They sure don't tell an expert story of our Tigers, and we have proved them so wrong so many times. They have proved that they are the wrong ones to listen to!!!!

I've seen us WIN IT ALL too in Miami in the ORANGE BOWL . I saw us lose it all last year in my beloved VALLEY OF THE SUN . Now , we have to finish and climb to the TOP ...like we did in January 1982. Danny Ford was A GREAT COACH ...now I want to see DABO Swinney win it all too. As, good as we played against an excellent Ohio State team....Alabama is the best in college football ,...like the Yankees in BASEBALL and we will have to play even better to knock off a Nick Saban team . I don't think he HAS EVER LOST in the Championship game. It will take a Herculean effort to beat Bama.

For me, the key to the game for Clemson- Is how does Cu's OL stack up agianst Bama's
front 7. Hyatt, Hearn, Gullimero, Crowder, and Pollard must, must win their fair share
of battles. And must come ready to play! Gallman needs to have a good day as well.
We all know CU can't turn the ball over, but I am curious to see how our OL does here.

You are right ,..our OL has to play physical and tough for 4 quarters because their DL and LBs are the best we will have faced. I also, believe we have to play MUCH BETTER DEFENSE ...than we did last year . We have to stop #88 O J Howard ...because he killed us last year ...and they will look to do the same this year ,..as well as Scarboro and Hurts. We have to penetrate like we did against OSU and not let Hurts beat us with his legs. We have to make him beat us throwing under pressure.
