Here is a site some may not know as to. One can request Military Service Records on line, and it is free (paid for by our taxes). https://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records![]() Request Military Service Records Veterans and their next of kin can get FREE copies of their DD 214, and other military service records including Official Military Personnel File (OMPF), Replacement Medals, and Medical and Health Records.
Some may have lost their DD-214. A fun note is I have 2. I was honorably discharged in 1967 as SP5, pay grade E-5. I reenlisted and was honorably discharged again in 1973.

Thank you for the information. Our situations are very similar. I enlisted in 1987 and served honorably through 1991. I reenlisted and received a bad conduct discharge in 1995.

Do know if they would let me get my deceased grandfathers records? I think I’d be kinda nice to add in his shadow box.

I used this to get records of my great uncle who died in France during WWII. The write up on his death was pretty gruesome, but at least we know he did not suffer. I found out from this that he was buried in France in the Lorraine American Military Cemetery where I got to visit his grave. We all thought that his body was in the local church cemetery where his headstone was, but that was just a memorial. If you have a family member buried at one of the Military Cemeteries, go visit. Let them know you are coming and they can arrarange to have the local person who volunteers to take care of your relative's grave vist and meet you. That was an experience I will never forget. They take wet sand from the beaches of Normandy and rub it on the cross, and it makes the name and other info pop. Gives me chills just describing it. I also sent away for my Dad's records, but they were lost and they were not able to provide.

he served in the Navy in WW2 and saw action in the Pacific. He had the "pig and rooster" tattoos on his feet, which I didn't know until my 90 year old uncle told me a few years ago, which shocked me as I'd never heard that before. He was a lineman and electrocuted in 1958 when I was one year old, and I was amazed that my mom never mentioned that. You can google "pig and rooster tattoo WW2" and see examples. From what I've read, Navy guys got that tattoo because when a ship was sunk, the only thing left floating for them to grab onto were the wooden crates carrying pigs and chickens...

Man I’m glad you posted that. I lost my dad earlier this week and buried him today. I was trying to find out about the DD214 so that I could get his military service headstone. Glad I came across your thread. ????????????
