Mike Norvell recently agreed to reduce his salary by $4.5 million

13

to help fund FSU's "Vision of Excellence" initiative, which will help with upcoming revenue sharing that goes into effect this summer.

I applaud this, and hope we will see other college football coaches take pay cuts to help fund the programs they are paid handsomely to oversee.

He is just one year removed from a great season.

If you are suggesting that FSU told him to take a salary reduction to keep his job, I would disagree with that. He and his attorney would justifiably laugh at FSU if they proposed something like that.

Most likely, he wants to see FSU be successful and sees the challenges ahead with revenue sharing and is putting his money where his mouth is. I applaud that.

This article suggests otherwise:

1

Dec 30, 2024, 1:03 PM [ in reply to Re: His buyout is $64 million. ]

From a FOIA request, the $4.5 million is a reduction in his 2025 salary:

Originally intended to be paid $9,935,000 in 2025, the restructured contract now reflects an updated salary of $5,435,000.

The contract states that “the difference...($4,500,000) will be utilized to create a Program Enhancement Pool to be applied in support of the football program during Coach’s tenure,” adding that “decisions regarding the use of Program Enhancement Pool funds will be made by the Employee, in consultation with the University.”

So you found the article but choose to ignore that A) “ With the reduction of pay coming for the 2025 season, the updated contract reflects that a buyout will also include a prorated sum to offset the difference in salary.” and B) increased his performance incentives. Unless he desperately needed $4.5 million now, it’s a net positive for him. This is a very silly hill on which to expose your willingness to deliberately lie to push narratives. You’re linking the very article that disproves your assertion, hoping no one bothers to read it.

As anyone with any sense of self-preservation would do after taking a winning product and flying it straight into the ground.

He doesn't need the money. But he does need to pull his career out of the ditch. Doing this buys him a little time and goodwill from a lot of different groups.

I personally think Norvell is a mediocre coach who is in way over his head and used the portal to catch lightning in a bottle, but who can't build a perennial winner the way Dabo Swinney has.

Re: Of course not. I think he suggested it.

2

Dec 30, 2024, 7:23 PM [ in reply to Of course not. I think he suggested it. ]

He’s not actually sacrificing anything. Per Tomahawk Nation “ With the reduction of pay coming for the 2025 season, the updated contract reflects that a buyout will also include a prorated sum to offset the difference in salary.” AND, he got increased performance incentives. His total compensation remains the same as his original contract even if he goes winless next year and gets fired. Alternatively, if he manages to win 9 games a year over the next decade (not a terribly tall order in the ACC plus a bowl game) he’ll make an additional $7.5 million not originally on the table. His other bonus remain intact. It’s actually a huge net positive for Norvell and points to the desperate financial situation at FSU. They obviously need to make these concessions to have the money to spend in the portal.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The potential payback is in incentives.

1

Dec 30, 2024, 10:27 PM [ in reply to Re: Of course not. I think he suggested it. ]

and not a dispute over the facts.

Norvell deferred compensation. I didn't say he sacrificed anything.

And they can call it whatever they want -- redirecting funds, repurposing funds, restructuring his contract, deferring compensation -- but if this clown wins the ACC this season instead of Clemson this conversation never takes place, because there's nothing to fix, no investment needed.

No, this is a face-saving move both for him and FSU, because I doubt FSU needs the money. And I doubt he'll survive long enough to trigger much if any of that $7.5M kicker.

Lot of details in that agreement.

4

Dec 30, 2024, 11:23 AM

I like Mike. I hope he succeeds. But, it's not like he ust agreed to write a check for 4.5 million bucks to FSU. And, it's not like he just agreed to cut his salary by 4.5 million this year.

He did agree to cut his salary, that is true.

But, Jimmy Sexton is his agent. There are lots of details in the agreement. I don't have a list of all of them but the gist of it is this: If he is successful in the coming years he will recoup all of that money.

The restructuring of the contract was a great PR move. FSU, like all schools, has to come up with 20.5 million bucks to pay athletes (assuming the House bill passes). All schools are looking to find ways to do that.

FSU decided to start a campaign to raise the money. The campaign is called somethng like "Vision for Excellence." Norvell agrees to restructure his contract and all 4.5 million bucks that he is foregoing this year will go into "Vision for Excellence."

Jimmy Sexton is no dummy. He takes care of his clients.

tnet-military.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Lot of details in that agreement.

3

Dec 30, 2024, 1:16 PM

I think you are right to point out that there are/ or likely are agreements that help him recoup this money. And it is a great "Public Relations" move regardless of what his final record was this year. This is about the next 10 years. Not the present.

Early on in Dabo's career I believe he passed on additional Salary to ensure he was able to pay his assistants more. That made me a believer in him. Because to me, after you are already making a million dollars in Clemson, SC, you are rich. Now how do you keep the riches coming in. Make sure the program has everything it needs, and then watch it take off. Which is what happened.

With College football's revenue model changing to include pay for athletes, this is another time when smart thinking ensures long term success. Teams that are not tethered to market max coaching salaries or have the ability to defer that compensation down the road will have more flexibility in their budgets to push towards players. This should directly affect the results on the field. I think it would be very smart for both Clemson and Dabo to openly participate in an initiative like this. Its not about what Dabo deserves at this point. And I am not looking to admonish/ or penalize him or anything like that because we haven't won a national title in 5 years. He is intitled to his contract that he signed.

That said, the world/ game is always changing. And to not take current condition into account is not smart. I also have to believe that the money that Dabo is making at this point cant make or break him anymore. Its merely a pride thing. If I had his net worth, I would be retired. To see him still coaching, its not about the money (though it does not hurt), its about his legacy at this point. To be included in the conversation when names like Bowden, Saban, Bryant, etc are discussed. He is only 55. He can/ and likely will get to 300 wins. Now if he can improve his chances on landing another Trevor Lawarence. Or get a D-Line again that included talent equal to Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkens, Clelin Ferrell, and Austin Bryant. Now we are talking about being in National Championships which enhances that National Legacy. I have to think that might be worth it. It would also benefit Clemson as well.

Anyway, I think its a smart move by Norvel and FSU. Sometimes you have to prime the pump to get it to work.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU is a public institution. FL has pretty strong FOI rules.

1

Dec 30, 2024, 7:46 PM

I have not read the contract, wouldn't understand it if I did. But, I listened to guys who are far more familiar with the details than I and it included things like incentives and bonuses for wins that would recoup the 4.5 million if he met those totals (over several years, not just one year). It also changed things about his guarantees if he is fired in the next coup[le of years.

Don't remember all the details. Just saying that Jimmy Sexton did a good job in restructuring his contract and it is not equivalent to taking a 50% cut in salary this year and no other changes made.

The guy who coaches the other major college football program in our conference just agreed to donate $4.5 million of his salary to fund this revenue sharing initiative. It is noteworthy because revenue sharing is new, and it has the potential to drastically change college football as we know it. There are a lot of unknowns, and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

I am not a Norvell fan, but I applaud him for donating a sizable amount of his own money to this initiative. He clearly wants to see it succeed at FSU.

If I missed some, please let me know. I find it admirable, as it really shows a dedication to the cause.

Is Norvell setting up a fund in case he's sued over missed NIL payments? Just ask the FSU men's BB coach, Leonard Hamilton, how that's working out.

How can a coach be sued when a business/3rd party is paying a player for their NIL? It appears the schools and coaches are more involved with buying players and making false claims than they are indicating.

Agree 100%. Brad should definitely take the lead on this, given his underperformance for the past 13 years.

Going 2-10 will do that ,, highly doubt he did that on his own lol

Hey JK- are you aware that FSU went 2-10? And one of those wins was a lucky last second escape against... Cal! Your hatred for dabo is hilarious

What does their record this year have to do with it?

Norvell voluntarily suggested this to FSU’s administration.

Pretty big flaw in your argument. If Mike Norvell was truly “donating” the money to NIL he wouldn’t need to restructure his contract. He could simply have made the donation.

You're not serious. You think his record doesn't have something to do with it?

Why didn't he do this last year?

Maybe he should spend more time on coaching rather than figuring ways to manipulate his contract.

Interesting that Norvell suggested a restructuring of his contract after a 2-10 season and not after a 13-1 season.

He cooked...He's got zero core to build around via the portal and has no foundation within his program....This is the gamble of win now and build your teams through the portal on an annual basis...They're going to have to blow it up again in the next year or 2. Serves him right...Balance the old style and new style of roster management is insanely difficult but it's the only recipe for continual success.

Norvell will be fired sometime between now and end of 2027.
