Why is the B1G conference so valuable to TV?

I get the B1G has a few very valuable programs in Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and, maybe, Wisconsin. Plus USC and UCLA are coming but I think they were added after a huge new deal. But they also have some pretty bad programs in Rutgers, Maryland, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Illinois, and Minnesota. Then there are middle of the road programs like Michigan State, Iowa, and Nebraska (do to success pre-B1G).
When you see some pretty descent PAC-12 teams didn't even add the value equal to the ACC per team payout, like Oregon, Washington, Utah, Arizona State, Arizona, and Colorado, it's hard to see how the networks justify 3x the ACC payout for the B1G.
I realize the ACC payout per team includes Clemson and FSU bringing up the average. I also realize most of this B1G school are really big and have huge alumni bases. Still doesn't compute for me how the B1G is that much more valuable than other conferences not named SEC. What am I missing?

Big universities in population centers. A tv partner willing to spend money to gain market share and room on the dial to make it profitable. Enough top tier programs to make it exciting

Just look at the average number of tv viewers per game per school. You will see a huge disparity in how many Big schools sit in the top 10 and top 50 versus same for ACC. Viewers compute to network advertising revenue which compute to conference right's fees per school. Clemson sits at #10, which is very good. But the 8 or 10 dogs in ACC badly pull down an overall conference value. To get Big or SEC type revenues the entire ACC schools would need to be far more attractive to a national audience.

TV looks at market share and you answered your own question with the huge alumni bases the Big10 has. TV is not just about who wins or loses but who watches the game.

To the big alumni bases. Also, they left espn and ABC because FOX, CBS and NBC were willing to pay more. The timing was great for them with FOX and NBC looking to increase college football content on their networks.
The ACC will never have the timing luck because of 20 year contract.
ACC has some good programs with great traditions: Clemson, FSU, Miami, Ga Tech, Va Tech, UNC, NC State, Pitt.
Bul also has half empty stadiums for many teams.

Just think of it as Ohio St & Mich do for B1G what Clemson

does for the ACC - prop up the league - except with much larger alum and fan bases. And Chicago and big city Yankee media are all in on the B1G.

I think it’s been already stated but huge alumni bases. Really good demographics as far as advertising. The big ten network helps a ton too. They just sold a portion of their ownership back to fox that puts the value of the network at 1Billion .
